Anwar Ibrahim Becomes Malaysia PM after Decades of Waiting

  • Veteran opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim finally became Malaysia's Prime Minister, capping a tumultuous political career that veered from coming close to clinching the top job on more than one occasion to spending years in prison on sodomy charges.
  • Anwar's reformist Pakatan Harapan will lead the next government as King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah chose him. The monarch intervened after no alliance secured a majority in a general election in which Anwar's coalition won the most seats.
  • Pakatan Harapan got the most seats in the general elections, 82 out of 220 up for grabs that day, but fell short of winning a majority, leading to the first hung parliament in the nation's history.

Australian PM Albanese Announces Free Trade Agreement with India

  • Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that his country's Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India was passed in the Parliament. According to Australia, the agreement will help secure them a foothold in the world's fastest-growing economy and enable Australian businesses to unlock or expand their operations in a market of nearly one and a half billion consumers. Last week, Australian trade minister Don Farrell said the agreement presents an enormous opportunity for services companies and professionals from his country to access the 140 crore-strong Indian markets.
  • The deal is extremely crucial for Australia as they want to diversify exports from China. Relations between the two countries are strained over Beijing's increasing dominance in the South Pacific Ocean.
  • Under FTA, Australia will offer zero-duty access to India for about 96 per cent of its exports (by value) from Day One. Labor-intensive industries in India such as gems & jewelry, textiles, leather & footwear, furniture, food & agricultural products, automobiles, railway wagons, medical devices, and engineering products will benefit the most. Australia hopes that with FTA, Indian goods will become competitive and cheaper in their market and replace Chinese products in the long run.

Fourth Edition of Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue in New Delhi

  • The three-day apex-level regional strategic dialogue of the Indian Navy, the "Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue 2022" (IPRD-2022) began in New Delhi. The IPRD is an annual international conference that seeks to foster exchange of ideas and promote deliberations on maritime issues relevant to the Indo-Pacific which, for India, stretches over a vast, predominantly maritime expanse from the eastern shore of Africa to the western shore of America.
  • The National Maritime Foundation (NMF) is the Navy's knowledge partner and chief organiser of each edition of the event.
  • The aim of each successive edition of the IPRD is to review both opportunities and challenges that arise within the Indo-Pacific. Through this annual dialogue, the Indian Navy and the NMF continue to provide a platform for incisive discussions pertaining to the geopolitical developments affecting the maritime domain of the Indo-Pacific.

Indian Embassy Organised Indian Film Festival in Korea

  • The 10th Indian Film Festival in Busan was held from Nov 18-20, 2022 in South Korea. It was organised by the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Embassy of India Seoul and supported by the Directorate of Film Festival, Ministry of I&B. 
  • This Film Festival is a part of the ongoing annual flagship cultural programme of Embassy of India (Seoul) 'SARANG – The Festival of India in Republic of Korea'. The first was screened on this platform was Padmavat (Hindi movie).

21st World Congress of Accountants Held in Mumbai

  • ICAI hosted the 21st World Congress of Accountants 2022 from November 18-21, 2022 at Jio World Centre, Mumbai, Maharashtra. 
  • The 4-day event was inaugurated by Om Birla (Speaker of Lok Sabha) and attended by the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal. 
  • Its theme for the year 2022 was, "Building Trust Enabling Sustainability". WOCA has been organised in every four years since 2002. WCOA has been held under the auspices of the International Federation of Accountants.

Crisil Cuts FY23 GDP Growth Forecast to 7%

  • Crisil in November 2022 revised down its India growth forecast for the current fiscal to 7% from 7.3% estimated earlier, citing the slowdown in global growth and its impact on India's exports and industrial activity.
  • The rating agency added that the growth of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) will slow considerably to 6% in FY24 as against 6.5% forecast earlier with the risk titled downwards, as the global growth decelerates faster.
  • The revised forecast for the current fiscal includes Q2GDP growth expectation of 6.5% against 13.5% in Q1, and just 4.5% GDP expansion in the second half.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev Wins Presidential Election of Kazakhstan

  •  Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev secured a second term in Sunday's snap election, winning 81.31% of the vote. Kazakhastan's Central Election Commission on Monday said the 69-year-old Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who came to power in 2019, received 81.31 per cent of the vote in Sunday's election. None of the five other candidates scored double digits in the vote, while 5.8 per cent of voters cast their ballot against all candidates.
  • Rich in natural resources and located at the crossroads of important trade routes, Kazakhstan sank into chaos during protests over high living costs in January, which left 238 dead. During the time, Tokayev projected himself as a stern administrator by violently supressing the protests.

India, EU Sign Pact on Climate, Quantum Tech

  • India and the European Union (EU) on Monday signed an agreement on cooperation in areas such as climate modelling and quantum technologies, building on the Trade and Technology Council launched by the two sides earlier this year.
  • The "Intent of Cooperation on High-Performance Computing (HPC), Weather Extremes and Climate Modelling and Quantum Technologies" was signed by India's ministry of electronics and IT (MeitY) and the European Commission's Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) during a virtual ceremony.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Attends FIFA World Cup Inauguration in Qatar

  • Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar  joined the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and other dignitaries in the inauguration of FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Dhankhar is in Doha for a two-day visit to represent India at the inauguration of FIFA's showpiece event.
  • Besides attending the inaugural ceremony of the Football World Cup, the Vice President also interacted with members of the Indian community during the visit. The 60,000-capacity Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor hosted the opening ceremony on 20 November, 2022 just before the first match between host Qatar and Ecuador.

India Ranks 61st in Network Readiness Index 2022

  • India climbed up six places to 61st rank in the Network Readiness Index 2022 report prepared by US-based non-profit body Portulans Institute, the telecom ministry said.
  • The country's overall score improved to 51.19 in 2022 from 49.74 in 2021.
  • The report stated that India secured 1st rank in 'AI talent concentration', second rank in 'Mobile broadband internet traffic within the country' and 'International Internet bandwidth', third rank in 'Annual investment in telecommunication services' and 'Domestic market size', fourth rank in 'ICT Services exports', fifth rank in 'FTTH/Building Internet subscriptions' and 'AI scientific publications'.
  • The United States topped the list with an overall score of 80.3. It is followed by Singapore with a score of 79.35 and Sweden with a score of 78.91.
  • Asia Pacific is led by Singapore, followed by South Korea and Japan. "NRI-2022 report states that India has a greater network readiness than would be expected given its income level. India is ranked 3rd out of 36 in the group of lower-middle-income countries after Ukraine (50) and Indonesia (59).

Third Edition of the 'No Money for Terror' Ministerial Conference

  • The third edition of the 'No Money for Terror' Ministerial Conference began in India. Pakistan and Afghanistan are not participating in the international event.
  • However, a total of 78 countries and multilateral organisations, including Ministers from 20 countries, have confirmed their presence at the two-day conference being organised on November 18 and November 19 here in the national capital.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered the inaugural address at the third 'No Money for Terror' (NMFT) Ministerial Conference on Counter-Terrorism Financing.
  • As per the Prime Minister's office, the conference will offer a unique platform for participating nations and organizations to deliberate on effectiveness of the current international regime on Counter Terrorism Financing as well as steps required to address emerging challenges.
  • The conference will build on the gains and learnings of the previous two conferences held in Paris in April 2018 and in Melbourne in November 2019. It will also work towards enhancing global cooperation to deny finances to terrorists and access to permissive jurisdictions to operate.
