Jaishankar Leads Indian Delegation at 19th Summit of Non-Aligned Movement in Uganda

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar led the Indian delegation at the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in Kampala, Uganda on January 19 and 20, 2024.
Jaishankar also met with Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer to exchange views on the ongoing high-level talks regarding the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the island country. They also discussed expediting the completion of development projects in the Maldives and strengthening cooperation between SAARC and NAM.

India's Gold Reserves Now Larger than Saudi Arabia, UK

According to the latest estimates released by the World Gold Council (WGC), India emerged as the country having the ninth-largest gold reserves in the world. With its gold reserves measuring 2,191.53 tonnes, valued at $ 131,795 million, India was ranked ahead of wealthy Arab and Western nations such as Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.
Meanwhile, the US grabbed the top spot, having gold reserves measuring 8,133.46 tonnes as per the WGC list, valued at $489,133 million. Germany came in the second distant spot with estimated gold reserves of 3,352 tonnes. Italy, France and Russia occupied the third, fourth and fifth spots respectively.

WEF Annual Meeting 2024

The 54^th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) was held from January 15 to 19, 2024, at the local Swiss Alpine School in Davos. Attended by over 100 governments, international organizations, forum partners, and diverse stakeholders, the focus was on fostering open dialogue among government, business, and civil society leaders.
The 54^th WEF Annual Meeting (2024) prioritised a 'Back to Basics' approach.

Vivek Ramaswamy Quits 2024 Presidential Race

Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy suspended his bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination and endorsed former President Donald Trump after finishing a disappointing fourth in Iowa's leadoff caucuses.
Ramaswamy said that he made the decision after determining there was no path forward for him in the race.

Switzerland to Host Ukraine Peace Summit on Zelenskiy's Request

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy secured Switzerland's agreement to host a global peace summit aimed at resolving the conflict sparked by Russia's incursion into Ukraine in February 2022. Switzerland, known for its neutrality and past mediation roles, will facilitate talks to find a resolution.

Bernardo Arevalo Sworn in as President of Guatemala

Anti-corruption crusader Bernardo Arevalo was sworn in as Guatemala's President after a chaotic inauguration that was delayed for hours by a last-ditch attempt by Congress opponents to weaken his authority.
He took the oath as President, replacing conservative politician Alejandro Giammattei whose government has been engulfed in corruption scandals.

Taiwan Elections 2024: Elected Lai Ching-te Next President

Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) candidate Lai Ching-te was elected the next President of Taiwan after he won the election, defeating Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang (KMT) and Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) by a huge margin.
The victory of Lai, who since 2020 had served as Vice President to Tsai Ing-wen, marked the continuation of a government that promoted a sovereign Taiwan and a national identity separate to China, and oversaw some of the deepest cross-strait tensions in decades as Beijing pushed towards its goal of annexation.

Sheikh Hasina Shakes up Bangladesh Foreign Ministry

The Government of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced Cabinet posts for Ministers.
The biggest names to have made it to the list are Asaduzzaman Khan, and Obaidul Quader, two heavyweights who retained their respective Ministries – home and road transport.
A major upward shift came for the former Minister of Information Hasan Mahmud, who received the charge of the Foreign Ministry.
