China Leads Global GenAI Patents: U.N. Data

  • China dominates the global race in generative artificial intelligence patents, filing more than 38,000 patents from 2014 to 2023, a new United Nations report showed in July 2024.
  • That's six times more than those filed by U.S.-based inventors, according to the UN World Intellectual Property Organisation.
  • Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that allows users to generate content such as text, images, music, audio, and videos.
  • Geographically, China leads with 38,210 inventions, far surpassing the U.S. (6,276), Republic of Korea (4,155), Japan (3,409) and India (1,350).

SCO Summit Concludes with Adoption of Astana Declaration

  • The 24th summit of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), held in Astana, Kazakhstan, concluded with the adoption of the Astana Declaration and the approval of 25 strategic documents.
  • The summit, titled 'Strengthening Multilateral Dialogue – Striving Towards a Sustainable Peace and Prosperity', brought together leaders from SCO member states to discuss key issues and chart the organisation's future course.
  • A historic milestone of the summit was the finalisation of procedures for admitting Belarus as a full member of the organisation, granting it the status of an SCO Member State. This expansion of the organisation's membership reflected its growing influence and reach.
  • The Astana Declaration underscored the SCO's role in bolstering global peace, security and stability.

Hungary Takes Over Rotating Presidency of EU Council for 6 Months

  • Hungary took over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) for six months, in July 2024, from Belgium with its focus on enhancing EU competitiveness.
  • Hungary's European Union Affairs Minister Janos Boka outlined the seven top priorities during Hungary's presidency. These priorities include enhancing the EU competitiveness, reinforcing European defence policy, EU enlargement, stemming illegal migration, shaping the future of a cohesion policy, formulating a farmer-oriented EU agricultural policy and addressing European demographic challenges.

Nepal Govt. in Crisis Again, Two Parties Strike Deal to Oust PM

  • In a dramatic development, politically fragile Nepal's two largest parties have inked a power-sharing deal to form a new government to replace the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', who on refused to resign and asserted that he would rather face a confidence vote.
  • The agreement, finalised between Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) chairman K. P. Sharma Oli, outlines the ministerial division, provincial leadership roles and a rotation for the Prime Ministerial position.

United Nations Conference on Afghanistan

  • The world witnessed a significant event in international relations. The third United Nations Conference on Afghanistan concluded in Doha, Qatar, marking the first time the Taliban participated in such talks since taking control of Afghanistan.
  • The conference brought together representatives from 25 countries.
  • International organizations like the European Union and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
  • Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban government chief spokesman represented Taliban at the conference.
  • The United Nations organised this conference with several goals: Promote peace in Afghanistan, discuss women's rights, address girls' education and tackle human rights issues.

Mauritanian President Comfortably Wins Re-election

  • Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani was re-elected as head of state following national vote, winning comfortably in the first round without the need for a run-off.
  • The former Army Chief won just over 56 per cent of the vote, the Independent National Electoral Commission said, giving him a second five-year term during which Mauritania is set to become a gas producer.

Artificial Intelligence Preparedness Index 2024

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) released an Artificial Intelligence Preparedness Index (AIPI) Dashboard on their website, tracking 174 economies globally for AI readiness.
  • The Index categorised each country into Advanced Economy (AE), Emerging Market Economy (EM), and Low-Income Country (LIC). Singapore (0.80), Denmark (0.78), and the United States (0.77) were among the highest-rated AEs, with India categorised as an EM with a 0.49 rating. India ranked 72 in a total of 174 countries, with Bangladesh (0.38) on 113, Sri Lanka (0.43) on 92, and China (0.63) on 31.
  • The rating for each country is given based on the assessment of readiness in four key areas - digital infrastructure, human capital and labour market policies, innovation and economic integration, and regulation.

  • Additional Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Chandra Shekhar Kumar represented India at the three - day meeting of CLGF Annual Board in Colombo, Sri Lanka in June 2024. The conference facilitated regional exchange and priority setting for ongoing initiatives in Commonwealth Asia. It also guided the future work of CLGF's Commonwealth Women in Local Government Network. Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Shri Dinesh Gunawardena inaugurated CLGF's Commonwealth Women in Local Government Network South Asia Regional Meeting on "Reinforcing Social Resilience through Women's Political Representation".
  • Addressing the CLGF conference, Chandra Shekhar Kumar requested to host the next CLGF meeting in India, the largest member country of the Commonwealth. This initiative aims to promote and strengthen democratic local governments across the Commonwealth and foster the exchange of best practices.
