Bumrah Crowned ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year

Indian pace sensation was crowned winner of the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year 2024 for his phenomenal performances in 2024. Jasprit Bumrah was named as the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year 2024.
Bumrah pipped the challenge from Travis Head, Harry Brook and Joe Root to be crowned the ICC Men's Cricketer of 2024. The speedster took 86 wickets in 21 matches at an average of 13.76 as he was the star for the Indian team during the T20 World Cup 2024 win and several other series.

India's Jyothi Yarraji Wins Gold Medal in Women's 60m Indoor Hurdles in France

India's Jyothi Yarraji rewrote her own national record in the women's 60m indoor hurdles at the Meeting de Nantes Métropole 2025 athletics meet in France.
The 25-year-old Indian athlete crossed the finish line in 8.07 seconds and beat her previous national record of 8.12 seconds.
South Africa's Marione Fourie, a silver medallist at the African Championships last year, came second in the final with a timing of 8.05 seconds, followed by Finland's Saara Keskitalo, who clocked 8.13 seconds.

Geoff Allardice Steps Down as ICC CEO

Australian Geoff Allardice stepped down as the ICC Chief Executive, just weeks ahead of the Champions Trophy ODI tournament.
He joined the ICC in 2012 as General Manager of Cricket, coming from Cricket Australia, where he served as Cricket Operations Manager. He was appointed CEO of the ICC in November 2021, after having served as acting CEO for eight months.

Steve Smith Scripts history; Joins Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting in Elite 10000-club

Steve Smith became the 15th batter in history of cricket to complete 10000 runs in Test cricket on day 1 of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Galle.
He reached his milestone in his 205th innings. In the process, the stand-in-captain also became the fifth-fastest batter to reach 10000 Test runs in the list which includes greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting and more.
Steve Smith also became the second fastest Australian to reach 10000 Test runs after Ricky Ponting, who completed the milestone in 196 innings. The trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Kumar Sangakkara lead the charts who completed the feat in 195 innings each.

Jannik Sinner Wins His Second Australian Open Title

Jannik Sinner claimed his second consecutive Australian Open championship, never facing a single break point and using his complete game to outplay and frustrate Alexander Zverev for a 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory in the final.
Sinner, a 23-year-old Italian, is the youngest man to leave Melbourne Park with the trophy two years in a row since Jim Courier in 1992-93.

Makarov Sergey Aleksandrovich Appointed as Indian Foreign Javelin Throw Coach

Two time Olympic bronze medallist 51-year-old Makarov Sergey Aleksandrovich was appointed foreign javelin coach for Indian javelin throwers, according to a statement released by Athletics Federation of India.
Aleksandrovich, who has a career best throw of 92.61m, comes from an athletics family with his father Aleksandr Fyodorovich Makarov having won the silver medal in the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
Aleksandrovich will be based at Patiala and will oversee the preparations of Indian javelin throwers at the national camp as well interact with Indian coaches for the three-year-cycle as per AFI.

Smriti Mandhana Named ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2024

Smriti Mandhana was named ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year for her outstanding performance in 2024. Smriti Mandhana was named ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year in 2018 and 2022 as well.
She put several batting stalwarts, including the likes of South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt, England's Tammy Beaumont and West Indies' Hayley Matthews, to shade. Her tally of 747 runs in 13 innings is the highest among the leading run-getters in Women's ODIs last year, way ahead of Wolvaardt (697), Beaumont (554) and Matthews (469).

Arshdeep Singh is ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year

Indian left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh was crowned the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year 2024 for his influential role in the team's World Cup title triumph, which cemented his reputation as one of the leading short format bowlers.
He was also named in the ICC T20I Team of the Year 2024 earlier in the day alongside Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.

Madison Keys Wins Australian Open 2025 Women's Champion

Madison Keys, the American tennis star, made history by clinching her first-ever Grand Slam title at the 2025 Australian Open. She defeated two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka with a scoreline of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in Melbourne. This victory cemented her position as one of the most remarkable players of her generation.
Keys made her professional debut at the age of 14 in 2009, and it didn't take long for her to make a mark in the tennis world:

Gadecki and Peers win Australian Open mixed Doubles Title

Australians Olivia Gadecki and John Peers battled back from a set down and defeated compatriots Kimberly Birrell and John-Patrick Smith 3-6 6-4 10-6 in the mixed doubles final of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.
While it was Gadecki's first mixed doubles title at a Grand Slam, Peers picked up his second having won the 2022 U.S.

India to Host FIDE Chess World Cup 2025

India is set to host the prestigious FIDE Chess World Cup 2025, marking a significant milestone for the country as it takes on the role of the host for its first major international chess tournament since the 2022 Chennai Chess Olympiad. This further elevates India's stature in the global chess arena, especially considering the country's growing influence in the sport.
The FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 is scheduled to take place from October 31 to November 27, 2025. This tournament is of paramount importance as it features a knockout format with over 200 players from around the world. It also serves as a vital gateway to the Candidates Tournament, offering three qualification spots. ICC Chairman Jay Shah Elected as New Member of Marylebone Cricket Club

Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary and current International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah was elected as a board member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Advisory Board.
Shah is among the 13 founding members of the new World Cricket Connects Advisory Board, which will be headed by former Sri Lanka captain and MCC president Kumar Sangakkara. Other founding members include former India captain Sourav Ganguly, former South Africa opener Graeme Smith, former Director of England Cricket Andrew Strauss, England women's captain Heather Knight, and JioStar's CEO (Sports) Sanjog Gupta.

P. V. Sindhu, Lakshya Sen to Lead Indian Team at Badminton Asia Mixed Championship in China

Double Olympic medallist P. V. Sindhu and World Championships bronze winner Lakshya Sen will lead a 14-member Indian team for the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships to be held in Qingdao, China from February 11-16. India had clinched a bronze medal in the last edition of the competition in Dubai in 2023.
The national selectors have given importance to the world rankings and current form of the players while selecting the squad that will have H. S. Prannoy and Malvika Bansod as the second men's and women's singles players respectively.
The strong Indian team will also have star doubles players Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. The women's doubles pairing could be either Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly or Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto.
