Appointment of Subodh Kumar (IAS) as Director in Ministry of Ayush

  • Subodh Kumar (IAS), a 2010-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, has been appointed as Director in the Ministry of Ayush.
  • The appointment, effective from the date of assuming charge, is initially until October 8 or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Presently, Kumar is on 'Compulsory wait' in the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
  • According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel (DoPT) on May 3, Subodh Kumar has been selected for the position. The order instructs his immediate release from his current assignment with the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and to assume his new role in the Ministry of Ayush.

Eminent Lawyer Paramjit Singh Patwalia to Join the Tribune Trust

  • Paramjit Singh Patwalia, who has distinguished himself as a legal luminary over the last 37 years, will join The Tribune Trust as its member.
  • A Bachelor of Law (LLB) from Panjab University, Patwalia has served as an Additional Solicitor General of India, representing the Indian Government in various cases and advising it on various high-stakes matters.
  • After obtaining his LLB degree in 1987, Patwalia began his career as an advocate in the Punjab and Haryana High Court the same year and soon acquired a vast practice in the fields of civil, service, education, tax and corporate laws. Elevated as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court at age 42 in 2006, he remained the youngest High Court Judge in the country until he resigned in December that year to resume his practice as a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India.
  • Patwalia will join former J&K Governor NN Vohra, Justice SS Sodhi, Lt Gen SS Mehta (retd) and Gurbachan Jagat on the Board of the Tribune Trust.

  • Controversial telecom entrepreneur Sam Pitroda quit as Overseas Congress chief after his remarks on the appearance of Indians raised a political storm midway into the 2024 election cycle with PM Narendra Modi terming the views disgusting and the opposition party completely distancing itself from him.

Dushyant Chautala's Jannayak Janta Party Offers to Back Congress against BJP in Haryana

  • Amidst a deepening political crisis in Haryana after three Independent MLAs withdrew support to the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the State, the Jannayak Janta Party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala on May 8 offered to "consider" outside support to the Congress to bring down the government. Responding to the offer, senior Congress leader and two-time Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that the JJP must write to the Governor saying that it is not supporting the BJP. "Soon our delegation will call upon the Haryana Governor, seeking imposition of President's Rule and fresh elections to the State Assembly," Mr. Hooda said. However, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini asserted that his government is not in any trouble. His predecessor and party colleague M.L. Khattar also claimed that many MLAs are in touch with the BJP and there is "nothing to worry ".

  • DSLSA collaborated with Max Healthcare Foundation for 'Project Saksham' to provide skills training to individuals within Tihar Jail, marking the largest initiative of its kind in India, said Manmohan, acting chief justice of Delhi High Court and executive chairperson of DSLSA.

  • The Tribune Trust appointed senior journalist Jyoti Malhotra, who has vast experience across print, TV and digital media, as the Editor-in-Chief of The Tribune Group.
  • Ms. Malhotra has held senior editorial positions in various news organisations such as India Today, Indian Express, The Print and Star News and has been a regular contributor to BBC Radio. She writes widely on the intersection between politics, diplomacy and culture across the Indian subcontinent with special focus on Pakistan and Afghanistan. She takes over from Rajesh Ramachandran, who leaves office after a six-year stint with the region's premier newspaper.

Phase-3 Campaigning Ends; Fate of Over 1300 Candidates from 93 Lok Sabha Seats

  • In the third and another crucial phase for the Lok Sabha elections 2024, a total of 93 seats are going to the polls. While a total of 94 seats was to go to the polls in the phase 3, voting was not needed for Surat as the BJP candidate got elected unopposed. However, the Betul seat of Madhya Pradesh is going to polls in the third phase after polling was earlier postponed due to death of a candidate. Also, the voting for the Anantnag-Rajouri seat was also postponed to May 26, thus, 93 seats are up for grab in this phase. The 93 seats are spread across 10 states and 1 union territory.

CAG Murmu, Nepal's Auditor General sign MoU for auditing collaboration

India, Maldives Hold Meeting to Resolve Disputes

  • Days before the possible visit of Maldives Foreign Minister, India and the Maldives held the fourth meeting of the India-Maldives high-level core group.
  • The core group was set to resolve issues that have affected the relationship after new Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu announced that he would review Male's dependency on Indian security and economic assistance.
  • Both sides continued their discussions on defence cooperation, development cooperation projects, efforts to enhance bilateral trade and investment, and capacity-building initiatives.
  • However, a Maldivian statement said that both sides also reviewed "the ongoing efforts to enable continued operation of Indian aviation platforms that provide humanitarian and medevac services to the people of Maldives". It was further agreed that the fifth meeting of the core group will be held in Male on a mutually agreeable date during the months of June and July.

Eight Railway Station in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh Renamed

  • The Centre approved renaming 8 Amethi railway stations in Uttar Pradesh. A no-objection-certificate (NOC) was issued to rename Fursatganj Railway Station as Tapeshwarnath Dham, Kasimpur Halt as Jais City, Jais City as Guru Gorakhnath Dham, Bani as Swami Paramhans, Misrauli as Maa Kalikan Dham, Nihalgarh as Maharaja Bijli Pasi, and Akbarganj as Maa Kalikan Dham, according to the home ministry.
  • The decision to rename the railway stations in Amethi follows persistent demands from the local community to honor prominent local figures and reflect the region's cultural heritage. The renaming initiative aims to align infrastructure with the cultural ethos of the region and foster a sense of pride among residents.
