NYC Climate Bill

New York City has passed sweeping legislation to curb energy demand from some of its most iconic skyscrapers, including Trump Tower.
The legislation, approved 45 to 2 in the city council, is backed by mayor Bill de Blasio and will push owners of residential and commercial buildings larger than 25,000 square feet to install new boilers, air conditioning systems, windows and insulation.
The goal is to reduce carbon emissions 40% by 2030, moving the city towards a goal of 80% by 2050.
The council also voted to require 5-cent fees on all paper bags distributed by stores, starting in March 2020, and to study the feasibility of replacing gas-fired power plants with battery storage systems powered by renewable energy.

Scientists Unearth Dinosaur Fossils

A site containing the 220-million-year-old fossilised remains of nearly a dozen dinosaurs has been discovered in western Argentina.
There are almost ten different individuals, it's a mass of bones, there's practically no sediment.
Argentina has been a rich source of fossils from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous eras over the years.

Shut Industrial Units Polluting Yamuna

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has ordered the Haryana State Pollution Control Board to shut down hundreds of industries factories located in Yamunanagar, Panipat and Sonepat districts that are polluting the Yamuna.
As per the orders issued on April 5, on the directions of NGT-appointed Yamuna Pollution Monitoring Committee, a joint team of CPCB and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute in December 2018 had conducted an inspection to monitor the quality of water in the Yamuna.
During the inspection, the monitoring team observed that three different drains were dumping untreated waste into the river at various locations.
The CPCB has also ordered the Haryana pollution watchdog to submit a compliance report within two months.

Glaciers Shrinking Much Faster

Earth's glaciers are melting much faster than scientists thought. A new study shows they are losing 369 billion tonnes of snow and ice each year, more than half of that in North America.
The most comprehensive measurement of glaciers worldwide found that thousands of inland masses of snow compressed into ice are shrinking 18 percent faster than an international panel of scientists calculated in 2013.
The world's glaciers are shrinking five times faster now than they were in the 1960s. Their melt is accelerating due to global warming, and adding more water to already rising seas.

NGT Directs CPCB to Prepare 'Noise Pollution Maps'

Asking the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to expand its noise monitoring mechanism beyond seven cities, the National Green Tribunal has directed it to prepare 'noise pollution map' of the entire country and identify city-specific hotspots for remedial action plan by June 15.
Currently, noise monitoring mechanism is functional in Delhi, Mumbai (including Navi Mumbai and Thane), Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Lucknow.
The CPCB may consider setting up such mechanism in all the cities which are found to be having noise level above approved threshold.
The CPCB in its analysis report of ambient noise level data of 2011-14 period for these seven cities had observed maximum violations of prescribed limits in Mumbai followed by Lucknow, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata.
Noting adverse effects of noise pollution on human health, especially infants and senior citizens, the NGT asked state pollution control boards (PCBs) to undertake noise level monitoring in conjunction with police departments and take remedial action.
