According to the 'Poonam Avlokkan' survey the population of the Asiatic lion at the Gir sanctuary in Gujarat has seen a commendable rise to approximately 29% (28.87%) from 27% in 2015, i.e their population went up from 523 in 2015 to 674 in 2020.
Subsequently the distribution area of the lions was also increased by 36% from 22,000sq km in 2015 to 30,000 sq km in 2020.
The 'Poonam Avlokkan' is an observation method carried out monthly and during every full-moon, all the officers and field staff members assess the number of lions for 24 hours across various areas within their respective jurisdictions.
The exercise for the 2020 data included 10 districts where lions have been spotted over the years in 13 forest divisions which are a part of the Lion census.

Britain Goes Coal Free
Britain passed a significant landmark – as it went two full months without burning coal to generate power.
A decade ago about 40% of the country's electricity came from coal; coronavirus is part of the story, but far from all.
When Britain went into lockdown, electricity demand plummeted; the National Grid responded by taking power plants off the network.
The four remaining coal-fired plants were among the first to be shut down.
The last coal generator came off the system on 9th April. No coal has been burnt for electricity since.
The current coal-free period smashes the previous record of 18 days, 6 hours and 10 minutes which was set in June last year (2019).

World's Largest and Hottest Volcano in Hawaii
A team of researchers from the University of Hawaii have claimed that Pūhāhonu in Hawaii is the largest shield volcano in the world and it is twice the size of Mauna Loa which was previously thought to be the world's largest volcano.
The researchers came to this conclusion after taking a series of new measurements, including a chemical analysis of underwater rocks. The researchers also conducted a detailed survey of the ocean floor to find out the true size of Pūhāhonu.
Pūhāhonu, which is an undersea volcano, is 171 miles long and 56 miles wide. The volcano is situated in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, around 620 miles from Honolulu. Only two 170-foot tall peaks of Pūhāhonu are visible above the water.
The researchers also said that Pūhāhonu is also the hottest shield volcano on earth with estimated magma temperatures of around 3,092 degrees Farehenheit.

Mangrove Forests Could be Wiped out in 30 Years
According to a new study, mangrove forests could disappear under rising sea levels by 2050 if the greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated.
Examining sediment data from 78 mangrove ecosystems from the last 10,000 years, a team of researchers from Rutgers University found that if the sea level rises by more than 6 millimetres or 0.23 inches per year, the mangroves would be in danger of dying in just 30 years. They are more likely to survive when sea-level rise is less than 5 millimetres (about 0.2 inches) per year, which is projected for low-emissions scenarios this century.
These ecosystems, such as the world's largest mangrove delta Sunderban spread across India and Bangladesh, are vital to storing planet-heating carbon dioxide. They act as buffers protecting coastlines from tropical storms and soil erosion. They are also very rich in biodiversity as they provide habitat to many species of tropical fish, providing livelihoods to coastal communities.

India's 1st Online Waste Management Platform
Andhra Pradesh (AP) Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy launched India's 1st online waste management platform of Andhra Pradesh Environment Management Corporation (APEMC) on the occasion of World Environment Day to ensure 100% safe disposal of industrial toxic wastes. The State Department of Environmental Management, APEMC, will take over responsibility of the online platform.
APEMC has been set up as a government company to handle the industrial waste & will work in coordination with Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) with a strong regulatory framework.
As per the Environmental Rules and Regulations APPCB will make necessary provisions for industries/organizations to hand over the waste generated by their units which cannot be treated within their premises, to APEMC for management of waste.
The platform will comply with the principles of 6 'R's– Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Redesign, Refurbish and Remanufacture.
