Over 170 Nations Sign Climate Pact

India along with more than 170 nations signed the historic Paris climate agreement, marking a significant step that has brought together developing and developed nations for beginning work on cutting down greenhouse gas emissions to combat global warming.
The signing is the first step toward ensuring that the agreement comes into force as soon as possible.
The agreement can enter into force 30 days after at least 55 Parties to the UNFCCC, accounting for at least 55 per cent of global emissions, ratify the agreement.

Ocean Alert

The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is experiencing its worst phase of bleaching, with 93 per cent of the reef affected.
The northern half of the reef has been hit the hardest, with about 80 per cent severely bleached. The far southern portion has escaped the warmest water.
Over 911 individual reefs were surveyed to map out the extent and severity of bleaching along the full 2300 km length of the Great Barrier Reef, which is made up of 2,900 smaller reefs.

World's Oldest Message Discovered

A 108-year-old postcard offering a shilling in exchange for its return to an English marine research institute is now officially the world's oldest message in a bottle after being recovered in Germany.
As per the Plymouth Laboratory of the Marine Biological Association (MBA), the bottle had smashed the old record of 99 years and 43 days in the Guinness World Records.
It was discovered in Germany's North Frisian islands, 108 years and 138 days after it was thrown into the North Sea off the English coast in November 30, 1906.

First Sign of Coral Bleaching in Sydney

For the first time ever, coral population in Sydney Harbour is showing signs of bleaching due to warm waters.
The researchers discovered the first ever incident of 'paled coral colonies during routine monitoring at a number of locations in Sydney Harbour.
The researchers claimed that around 45% of harbour's hard corals has been devastated by warm waters.
Coral bleaching usually occurs when the temperature of sea water rises abnormally. Several factors are responsible for such warm waters like climate change, global warming, El Nino etc.

Early Melting of Ice Sheet

As per data, the seasonal melting of Greenland's vast ice sheet reached record levels this week with around 12 per cent of the ice sheet was melting, almost one month.
The record coincided with unusually warm weather in the Arctic territory, with temperatures at some weather stations on the ice reaching 10 degrees Celsius.
In Kangerlussuaq on Greenland's west coast, the mercury reached 17.8 degrees Celsius, one of the highest April temperatures in Greenland since records began in 1873.
Greenland ice loss contributed to a global average sea level rise of 25 millimetres (about an inch) between 1990 and 2010.
