Supreme Court Clears Sandeep Moudgil's Name for Punjab and Haryana HC Judge
The Supreme Court collegium has cleared the name of advocate Sandeep Moudgil for elevation as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. With this, all five names, recommended by the High Court collegium for elevation in August 2020, have been cleared by the apex court.
Initially, the names of five advocates, including Vikas Suri, Vinod Sharma Bhardwaj, Pankaj Jain and Jasjit Singh Bedi, were finalised and forwarded. These were further forwarded by the Centre to the Supreme Court as late as in April this year. While Moudgil's name was pending, the other names were cleared by the SC collegium at its meeting held on September 1.
Navjot Singh Sidhu to Stay as Punjab Congress Chief
After much political drama, Navjot Singh Sidhu will continue as the Punjab Congress chief and a coordination panel is likely to be set up which will be consulted before taking significant decisions by the Punjab government in future.
Sidhu met Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and this decision was reached. The meeting was also attended by Congress leader and central observer Harish Chaudhary, Minister Pargat Singh and Punjab Congress working president Kuljit Nagra.

TMC to Contest All 40 Seats in Goa Assembly Polls on its Own
A day after joining the Trinamool Congress (TMC), former Congress MLA Luizinho Faleiro said that the Mamata Banerjee-led party plans to contest all 40 seats in the next year's Goa Assembly polls on its own, without forging any alliance.
In the last Assembly polls, the Congress had won the highest number of 17 seats, restricting the BJP to 13 seats. However, surprising the Congress, the saffron party allied with regional parties and formed government under the leadership of senior leader Manohar Parrikar.
PM Modi Chairs 38th PRAGATI Meeting
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the 38th PRAGATI meeting to review multiple projects, grievances and programmes of central and state government. PRAGATI stands for Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation. In the meeting, eight projects were taken for review having a cumulative cost of around Rs 50,000 crore. 297 projects worth Rs. 14.39 lakh crore has been reviewed so far in the previous 37 PRAGATI meetings.
PRAGATI is an ambitious multi-purpose and multi-modal platform, launched in March 2015, by PM Modi as a unique integrating and interactive platform, aimed at addressing common man's grievances and simultaneously monitoring and reviewing important programmes and projects of the Government of India as well as projects flagged by State Governments.
SC Collegium Recommends 16 Names for Elevation as Judges of 4 High Courts
The Supreme Court collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) N V Ramana, has recommended 16 names for elevation as judges of the High Courts of Bombay, Gujarat, Orissa and Punjab and Haryana.
In its meeting, the collegium approved the proposal for elevation of 16 names -- six judicial officers and 10 advocates as judges of these four High Courts.
Besides the CJI, the three-member collegium which deals with the appointment in High Courts includes Justices U U Lalit and A M Khanwilkar.

Meghalaya Gets First Native Woman Head of Bureaucracy
Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang, a 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service officer, was appointed as Meghalaya's Chief Secretary, making her the first native woman of the state to head its bureaucracy. P. P. Trivedi was the first woman Chief Secretary of Meghalaya in the late 80s.
Suchiang had served in departments such as home, finance, personnel.
Aveek Sarkar Re-elected as Press Trust of India Chairman
Aveek Sarkar, the Editor Emeritus and Vice Chairman of the Ananda Bazar Group of Publications, was re-elected Chairman of Press Trust of India (PTI), the country's largest premier news agency. Sarkar is a man of varied interests and counts books, food, wine and art among his principal loves. He was captain of the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) for 10 years. Sarkar's re-election for a two-year term was ratified by PTI's Board of Directors at their meeting.

Delhi Greenest City for Real Estate in India
According to a study by property consultant Knight Frank, Delhi is the greenest city for real estate in India but ranks 63rd globally.
London, Shanghai, New York, Paris and Washington DC are the world's top five green cities for real estate.
Globally ranked 63rd, Delhi is the greenest city for real estate in India. Followed by Chennai with a global rank of 224, Mumbai with a global rank of 240, Hyderabad with a global rank of 245, Bengaluru with a global rank of 259 and Pune with a global rank of 260.
In its research, the consultant measured 286 cities on a range of factors, such as well-developed public transport networks, urban green space, and a high number of green-rated buildings.
Former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro Joins TMC
Two days after quitting the Congress, former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro joined the Trinamool Congress.
He joined the party in presence of TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and other senior leaders such as Sougata Ray and Subrata Mukherjee.
Faleiro along with a few other Congress leaders from Goa had met TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Fourth Indo-US Health Dialogue
Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar led the Indian delegation at the 4th Indo-US Health Dialogue, held in New Delhi. The US delegation for the dialogue was led by Ms. Loyce Pace, Director, Office of Global Affairs at U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The two-day Dialogue was a platform to deliberate upon multiple ongoing collaborations in the health sector between the two countries.
The issues planned for deliberations in this round also encompassed areas of concern pertaining to strengthening of epidemiological research and surveillance, vaccine development, One Health, zoonotic and vector-borne diseases, health systems and health policies etc.
An MoU was finalised between the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Republic of India and the Department of Health and Human Services of the United States of America, in the field of the health sector, covering issues like Health Safety and Security; Communicable Diseases & Non-Communicable Diseases; Health Systems; and Health Policy.
India Bags IAEA External Auditor Job
India was elected as the external auditor to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a prestigious institution that promotes peaceful use of nuclear energy, for a period of six years from 2022 to 2027 after beating Germany and the United Kingdom among other counties. India's comptroller and auditor general GC Murmu was selected as the external auditor of IAEA and the ministry of external affairs (MEA).
In the first round of voting for the post, Germany got 36 votes, India 30, the UK 8, Russia 11, Turkey 9, Egypt 20, Republic of Korea 2 and the Philippines 7 votes. The second round boiled down to the race between India and Germany with India managing to beat the European country.
Kanhaiya Kumar, Jignesh Mevani Join Congress
Former JNU Students' Union President Kanhaiya Kumar joined the Congress in the presence of party leader Rahul Gandhi at the party's headquarters in New Delhi. Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani extended support to Kumar.
Kumar is a member of the CPI national executive, a top decision-making body of the party, while Mevani is an independent MLA from the Vadgam constituency in Gujarat and convener of Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM). In the 2017 Gujarat Assembly election, the Congress party did not field its candidate against Mevani in the Vadgam constituency.
Pan-India Helpline for Senior Citizens
Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment launched India's first Pan-India helpline for senior citizens, called "Elder Line" having a Toll-Free No. 14567. This line will extend support to senior citizens in the challenges and problems they face.
Elder Line will help senior citizens in providing free information and guidance on pension issues, legal issues, on field intervention in cases of abuse, emotional support, rescue and care for homeless senior citizens etc.
Elder Line is a culmination of the initiative of Tata Trusts in collaboration with its partner, Vijayavahini Charitable Foundation. It was launched in collaboration with the Government of Telangana in Hyderabad in 2018, to help the elders there. Tata Trusts continues to engage in strategic philanthropy in order to create deep, wide & irreversible impact. Currently, Tata Trusts & NSE Foundation are working as technical partners and are jointly supporting the Ministry in operationalising Elder Line.
Elder line has been opened by 17 states for their respective geographies, as of now.
