Sixth win on the spin lifts Chelsea to second

  • Abraham ended Palace's dogged defensive resistance with a simple finish from Willian's deft through ball seven minutes into the second half before Pulisic headed home a loose ball 11 minutes from time to seal all three points.
  • Chelsea edge a point clear of Manchester City and to within five of leaders Liverpool, who host City in a highly-anticipated clash.
  • A 4-4 draw with Ajax took the tally of goals Chelsea's prior 18 games this season to 70 at an average of nearly four per game.
  • However, the Blues free flowing football under Frank Lampard was met with a brick wall of a Palace defence for the first 45 minutes.
  • Pulisic had scored four goals in his last two Premier League games as the American begins to deliver on his £58mil (RM306mil) price tag and only a fine save from Vicente Guaita denied the United States captain another strike early on.

Special Umpire to Monitor 'No Balls'

  •  The 2020 edition of the IPL could have a special umpire just to monitor no balls. The idea was floated and accepted well at a meeting of the IPL Governing Council, chaired by former India batsman Brijesh Patel, at the BCCI HQ.
  • It's still not clear, though, if that 'special umpire' would be the third or fourth umpire, or a new gentleman in the umpiring team altogether.
  • The need for this new rule seems to have been instigated by a number of cases in the last IPL when the umpires didn't give genuine no balls, costing teams matches from a crucial position.
  • A primary case was India and Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli coming down heavily on umpire S Ravi after the final delivery of their match against the Mumbai Indians, bowled by pacer Lasith Malinga, turned out to be 'no-ball' which was not awarded to the losing team.
  • The innovative concept of having such umpires could be tried at any of the domestic tournament before a final call will be taken on it. This isn't the first time that this rule will be applied in top-level cricket— it was implemented by the ICC during the 2002 Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka too.

Rachna breaks Tintu's junior record

  •  Haryana's Rachna marked her shift from being a single-lapper to 800m with a memorable victory in the 35th National Junior Athletic Championships, breaking Tintu Luka's 11-year-old under-20 meet record with a 2:06.12 effort in Guntur.
  • Luka had set the meet mark at 2:07.48 in Mysore in 2008.

IPL to Go 'International'

  •  The newly formed governing council of the Indian Premier League (IPL) — in its very first meeting — has proposed that franchises be allowed to explore the idea of playing 'friendlies' overseas.
  • The decision to play friendlies in overseas destinations will bear no official stamp of the tournament or the cricket board but will be considered as potential brandbuilding exercises.
  • This is only a proposal and has to be tabled at the BCCI AGM at the end of this month (November 2019) for approval.
  • However, the Governing Council's call has, for the first time in 12 years since the inception of the tournament, considered the possibility of India's domestic cricket going global.
  • Till now, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) has not allowed either franchises or cricketers to play overseas, a decision that the court-appointed Committee of Administrators also stuck to.
  • Mumbai Indians were among the first to request the BCCI in the past that they be allowed to play some friendly matches in Canada.

NZ Takes Lead over England

  •  A dramatic England collapse which saw five wickets fall for only 10 runs allowed New Zealand to snatch a 14-run victory in their Twenty20international in Nelson. It also put New Zealand 2-1 ahead in the series with two games to play.
  • England were on track to overhaul New Zealand's 180 when they reached 139 for two in the15th over, with captain Eoin Morgan in full flight as he cracked sixes off consecutive Mitchell Santner deliveries.
  • But with England needing 42 off the remaining 31 deliveries Santner turned the match when he had Morgan caught by Colin Munro off the final ball of the over. Dawid Malan (55) and James Vince (49) had laid a solid foundation for England at the top of the innings.
  • Man-of-the-match Colin de Grandhomme smacked 55 off 35 while Taylor produced a more sedate 27 from 24 in a 66-run stand after New Zealand were three down in the eighth over.

Australia's Seven-wicket Victory over Pakistan
