The Asian and Commonwealth champion won bronze at the competition in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, in September to secure an Olympic spot in the 65 kg category.
  • Punia, who was honoured with Padma Shri this year, had caused a stir after being ignored for the Khel Ratna last year but was the unanimous choice this time around. He recently got engaged to fellow- wrestler Sangeeta Phogat.

India's Pace Battery Storms into History

  •  Holding, Garner, Marshall and Walsh, or Bumrah, Sharma, Yadav and Shami?
  • India's fast bowlers, who have rapidly changed the rules of engagement between their teams and others at home or away, bounced to a new high in 2019 by collectively averaging an astonishing 15.16 runs per wicket in eight Tests this calendar year—the lowest in the 142-year history of Test cricket.
  • This year, the leader of the Indian quartet, Jasprit Bumrah, missing five home Tests due to back injury didn't seem to matter as Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav were relentless even without him on pitches that were far from seam-friendly. The three shared 19 wickets Indian bowlers took in Kolkata in the pink-ball Test against Bangladesh last week—the first time the spinners didn't take any in a home match that saw a result. In all, the Indian pacemen took 95 wickets between them in 2019—Bumrah 14 at 13.14, Sharma 25 at 15.56, Shami 33 at 16.67 and Yadav 23 at 13.65.
  • The World No 1 team is now way ahead atop the World Test Championship table after extending their world record for consecutive series wins at home to 12. The seventh Test win in a row is also India's best, with the Kolkata Test wrapped up in 161.2 overs making it the shortest finished game in India.

Most impressive of the lot was Sagar. He was down 1-6 against Bexultanov Yerkhan of Kazakhstan, he made a remarkable turnaround in the last 20 seconds to win 7-6.

Chelsea Win Battle Of The Ball

  •  Pep Guardiola has built his decade of football success on creating teams that dominate possession but for the first time in his career — one of his teams had less of the ball than the opposition.
  • From Barcelona to Bayern Munich and on to Manchester City, the 'Pep way' has been built around an obsessive attention to keeping hold of the ball.
  • But something strange happened — his City side beat Chelsea in the Premier League without having a majority of the possession.
  • The possession stat of 46.74 during City's 2-1 win was the lowest recorded by a side managed by Guardiola in any of his 381 top-flight matches in charge at his three clubs.

Australia Thrash Pakistan by an Innings & 5 Runs

  •  Australia duly wrapped up victory over Pakistan by an innings and five runs in the first test in Brisbane but they were forced to wait until late on day four by a magnificent rearguard action from Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. The hosts needed only seven wickets to ensure they would take a 1-0 lead to Adelaide Oval for the second and final match of the series but Azam's second test century and 95 from Rizwan stalled their march to victory. The pair were finally dislodged after a 132-run partnership and the Australian quicks finished the job with the second new ball, dismissing the last four batsmen for 30 runs to maintain Australia's 31-year unbeaten run at the Gabba.

Croatia to Face India or Pakistan in Davis Cup Qualifier

  •  Croatia will play either India or Pakistan to qualify for next year's Davis Cup, after the draw for the qualification stage was made on 24 November 2019. The 2018 champions crashed out in the group stage of this week's tournament in Madrid, with the final pitting Rafael Nadal's Spain against Canada.
  • Spain, Canada and the two losing semi-finalists, Great Britain and Russia, automatically qualify for the competition in 2020, as well as Serbia and France, who have been granted the two wild card slots. It leaves 12 places for the winners of the qualifiers, which will be contested on the weekend of March 6 and 7, 2020.
  • Ties will consist of four singles matches and one doubles, with all rubbers played over the best-of-three tie-break sets.
  • Other stand-out fixtures include Colombia facing 2016 champions Argentina, and 28-time winners Australia taking on Brazil. Germany, who lost to Britain in this year's quarter-finals, will be up against Belarus.
  • Croatia, Colombia, Australia and Germany will all be at home.

New Zealand Beat England by Innings in First Test

  • Wagner took three wickets in 17 balls for just one run as England collapsed from 132-5 to 138-8 before tea, then broke a 59-run ninth-wicket partnership between Jofra Archer and Sam Curran after they had threatened to thwart the hosts.
  • The left armer then trapped Stuart Broad in front for a first ball duck to end England's resistance at 197 and end with figures of 5-44 from 19.2 overs.
