Satellite Fails to Reach Orbit

  • As per reports, Iran launched a domestically made satellite but it failed to reach orbit.
  • It was launched with success and we have reached most our aims, but the "Zafar" satellite did not reach orbit as planned.
  • The launch was the latest in a programme which the United States says helps Tehran advance its ballistic missile technology.

London Start-up Launches First Big Batch of Satellites

  • The UK-based OneWeb company sent 34 satellites into orbit on a single Soyuz rocket from Baikonur in Kazakhstan.
  • The start-up is building a mega-constellation in the sky to deliver broadband internet to all corners of the globe.
  • Six spacecraft were lofted in 2019 to prove the technology, but this year will see big batches of platforms going up on a near monthly basis.
  • The aim is to have the full network in operation by the end of 2021.
  • OneWeb is in a race with a number of other companies that want to provide the same kind of service.

UAE Discovers New Natural Jebel Ali Gas Field

  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) discovered huge shallow gas resources called 'Jebel Ali gas field' with estimated reserves of 80 trillion standard cubic feet spanning an area of 5,000 square kilometres in the cross-border area of the Emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
  • Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), the government-owned energy giant, will jointly develop the reservoir with distributor the Dubai Supply Authority (DSA).
  • This discovery will enhance UAE's aim of achieving gas self-sufficiency & also help promote major development projects.

NASA Astronaut to Set New Female Space Record

  • NASA astronaut Christina Koch is set to complete the longest-ever single spaceflight by a woman.
  • When she returns to Earth on Thursday, Koch will have spent 328 days on the International Space Station (ISS), surpassing the previous record held by fellow American Peggy Whitson.
  • Ms Koch will come back in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, parachuting down to a landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan.
  • Her record is just 12 days short of the all-time US record set by Scott Kelly.
  • Mr. Kelly stayed on the ISS from 2015-2016.
  • Ms. Koch surpassed the 289-day record set by fellow American Ms. Whitson on 28 December 2019. But her return to Earth, shortly after 09:00 GMT, will set the marker for future space travellers to beat.

Wristwatch to Boost Athletic Performance

  • Researchers have developed a device the size of a wristwatch which can monitor an individual's body chemistry to help improve athletic performance, and identify health problems. According to a study, the device can be used to detect dehydration, and track athletic recovery with potential applications ranging from military training to competitive sports.
