UAE Unveils Energy Efficiency Alliance at COP29

  • The UAE has announced the establishment of the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. This initiative aims to double annual global energy efficiency rates by 2030, aligning with the UAE's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable resource use. Building on the historic 'UAE Consensus' established at COP28, this alliance seeks to foster international collaboration and innovation in energy efficiency, emphasizing the role of knowledge sharing, partnerships, and investment in achieving sustainability goals.

US Returns $10 Million Worth of Looted Antiques to India

  • In a major development, the United States has returned over 1,400 looted artifacts worth $10 million to India as part of an ongoing initiative to repatriate stolen cultural items from South and Southeast Asia. Among the returned artifacts is a celestial dancer sandstone sculpture, which had been illegally smuggled from central India to London before being sold to a patron of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Trump Names Karoline Leavitt as White House Press Secretary

  • United States (US) President-elect Donald Trump named Karoline Leavitt as the White House secretary. Leavitt will be the youngest person ever to take charge of this post.
  • Previously that distinction went to Ronald Ziegler, who was 29 when he took the position in 1969 in Richard Nixon's administration. Earlier, Leavitt had served as Trump's campaign press secretary.
  • During Trump's first term in office from 2017 to 2021, Leavitt worked in the White House press office. She then became communications director for New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik.

Landslide Victory for Sri Lankan President's Party

  • Sri Lanka's National People's Power of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake swept the parliamentary elections by winning a two-thirds majority, and also dominating the Jaffna electoral district - the heartland of the nation's Tamil minority.
  • The NPP, which contested under the Malimawa (compass) symbol, secured 159 out of the 225 seats in parliament, the first time any party has won a two-thirds majority under the country's proportional representation system introduced in 1978. The victory cemented a transformation of the island-nation's political landscape which for decades was dominated by established political parties of family dynasties.

Australia Appoints First Anti-Slavery Commissioner to Combat Modern Slavery

  • Australia appointed its first Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Chris Evans, who will serve a five-year term starting in December 2024. The position is designed to strengthen efforts across the government, business, and society to combat modern slavery, which includes human trafficking, forced labour, and deceptive recruiting. The move is in line with the Albanese Government's commitment to address modern slavery, with a focus on victim support, raising awareness, and improving business accountability in supply chains.
  • The Anti-Slavery Commissioner's appointment is a crucial step in addressing the growing issue of modern slavery in Australia. The government remains committed to tackling modern slavery and supporting victims and survivors.

Rajnath Singh to Attend ASEAN Defence Ministers Plus

  • Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to visit Laos from November 20-22 for the 11th ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting-Plus (ADMM Plus).
  • The ADMM-Plus is a platform for the ASEAN member states -Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam- and its eight Dialogue Partners -India, US, China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand- to strengthen security and defence cooperation.
  • India became the dialogue partner of ASEAN in 1992. Furthermore, the inaugural ADMM-Plus was convened in Vietnam's Hanoi in October 2010.
  • Since 2017, the ADMM-Plus Ministers meetings have been held annually to bolster cooperation amongst ASEAN and the Plus countries.

UN Appoints Head of Observer Group for India, Pakistan

  • The UN appointed Major General Ramón Guardado Sánchez from Mexico as the chief military observer for the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).
  • Since 1972, India has opposed the mandate of UNMOGIP, and has limited the activities of UN observers in J&K. India's stance is that the Simla Agreement mentions that the resolution of J&K is a bilateral matter.

Dubai Secures Top Spot in Middle East in 2024 Global City Index

  • Dubai emerged as the highest-ranked city in West Asia and Africa in the '2024 Global City Index' by Brand Finance, maintaining its regional lead for the second consecutive year. The city also made impressive strides globally, rising to fifth place, surpassing major cities like Singapore, Los Angeles, Sydney, San Francisco, and Amsterdam.

Trump Picks Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence

  • President-elect Donald Trump shortlisted Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democrat, as the director of National Intelligence. Gabbard represented Democrats in the Congress from Hawaii from 2013 to 2021.
  • Tulsi Gabbard, who unsuccessfully fought the Democrats presidential nomination in 2020, endorsed Republican Donald Trump in the 2024 elections. Although her selection by Trump's team requires a clearance from the Senate which was last week won by Republicans.

  • The 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference was hosted by the Parliament of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia in November 2024.
  • The 67th CPC was held under the main theme of 'Engage, Empower, Sustain: Charting the Course for Resilient Democracy'.
  • Anurag Sharma, a member of the Jhansi Lalitpur Lok Sabha Constituency, led the Indian delegation at the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference in Sydney, Australia.
