Chad Junta Chief Officially Wins Election

  • Chad's junta leader General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno won the African nation's May 6 presidential election with 61 per cent of the vote, according to final results announced.
  • The Constitutional Council, which declared the winner, also rejected a bid by Prime Minister Succes Masra to annul the result.
  • Deby easily won the vote. Masra came second with 18.5 per cent, while former Prime Minister Albert Pahimi Padacke won 16.9 per cent.

Slovakia Prime Minister Shot After Cabinet Meeting

  • Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico suffered a bullet injury after being shot at. He was hospitalised and survived the surgery. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock at the incident. Multiple shots were fired at him.
  • The former Communist Party member took power for the fourth time in October 2023 and has turned the country's foreign policy towards more pro-Russian views.

Wong Sworn in as Singapore's PM

  • Singapore's deputy leader Lawrence Wong was sworn in as the nation's fourth Prime Minister in a carefully planned political succession designed to ensure continuity and stability in the Asian financial hub.
  • Wong succeeded Lee Hsien Loong who stepped down after two decades at the helm. Lee's resignation marked the end of a family dynasty led by his father Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's charismatic first leader who built the colonial trading outpost into a business-friendly, affluent country during 31 years in office.
  • Wong, a civil servant turned politician, came to prominence while coordinating Singapore's successful fight against Covid-19.

Putin Shuffles Security Team, Replaces Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin replaced Sergei Shoigu as Defence Minister in a Cabinet shakeup that comes as he begins his fifth term in office.
  • In line with Russian law, the entire Russian Cabinet resigned following Putin's glittering inauguration in the Kremlin, and most members were widely expected to keep their jobs, while Shoigu's fate had appeared uncertain.
  • Putin signed a decree appointing Shoigu as secretary of Russia's Security Council. The appointment was announced shortly after Putin proposed Andrei Belousov to become the country's Defence Minister in place of Shoigu.

India Contributes $500,000 to UN Counter-Terrorism Trust Fund

  • India reaffirmed its dedication to the global fight against terrorism by contributing $500,000 to the UN Counter-Terrorism Trust Fund (CTTF). Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered the contribution to Under Secretary General Vladimir Voronkov. This financial support adds to India's ongoing commitment, totalling $2.55 million, aimed at bolstering multilateral efforts against terrorism.
  • The UN Security Council, one of the primary organs of the United Nations, is responsible for maintaining international peace and security. Comprising 15 members, including five permanent and ten non-permanent members, the Council addresses global security issues and adopts resolutions to address emerging threats. It is headquartered in New York City, US.

Chad's Military Dictator Idriss Deby Wins Presidential Election

  • Mahamat Idris Deby Itno, Chad's military dictator and interim President, secured victory in the presidential election 2024. This provisional result, announced by the National Election Management Agency is poised to extend Deby's rule for another six years.
  • Idriss Deby, Mahamat's father, ruled Chad for 30 years with an iron fist until his death in 2021. Mahamat Idris Deby took over as interim president after his father's demise, subsequently consolidating power with the support of army generals.
  • Mahamat Idris Deby Itno clinched 61.03% of the votes, while his closest competitor, Prime Minister Succes Masra, garnered only 18.53%.

CJI D. Y. Chandrachud to Attend 'J20'- Summit of Heads of Apex Courts of G20 Members - In Brazil

  • Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud has been invited to attend 'J20' a summit of Heads of Supreme Courts and Constitutional Courts of all the G20 members. The J20 summit is being organised by the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court in light of Brazil's presidency of G20 2024.
  • The event is scheduled to take place from May 12-14 and includes key dignitaries and heads of various Supreme Courts of G20 members. As per the official list, these include participation from the African Union, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, European Union, France, Germany, India, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, UK, Portugal and Spain.
  • The conference which is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil focuses on deliberating upon 3 major themes - (1) The promotion of citizenship and social inclusion by the Judiciary; (2) Climate litigation and sustainable development and (3) Digital transformation and the use of technology to enhance judicial efficiency.
