BSP to Contest UP and Uttarakhand Assembly Elections Alone

  • According to party chief Mayawati, the BSP will not enter into any alliance for Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand assembly polls.
  • The party wants to clarify that barring Punjab, the BSP will be contesting the Assembly elections to be held in UP and Uttarakhand alone, and will not be entering into any alliance with anyone.
  • The BSP has recently joined hands with the Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab.

Puducherry Cabinet, Includes First Woman Minister in Decades

  • More than a month after the Puducherry election results were announced, five legislators of the N. Rangasamy-led coalition cabinet were sworn in as ministers by Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan. The swearing-in ceremony for the ministers, including three AINRC members and two BJP leaders, was held at Lt Governor's residence, Raj Nivas.
  • Puducherry got its first woman minister in over four decades with Priyanga taking the oath of office. Late Congress leader Renuka Appadurai was the last woman minister in Puducherry during 1980-83 and handled the education portfolio in the MDR Ramachandran-led coalition.

UP Zila Panchayat Chairman Elections: BJP to Win 17 Seats Unopposed

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is going to win 17 seats unopposed in the elections of the Uttar Pradesh Zila Panchayat chairpersons. The BJP candidates for the Zila Panchayat chairman post are all set to be declared winners unopposed as no other candidate filed nomination papers.
  • The Samajwadi Party (SP), in a reaction, has sacked presidents of 11 districts, mostly the ones where the BJP candidate has been elected unopposed.
  • The SP state President Naresh Uttam Patel, announced that district presidents of the party units in Gorakhpur, Moradabad, Jhansi, Agra, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Mau, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bhadohi, Gonda and Lalitpur have been removed from their post on the directions of the national president Akhilesh Yadav.

India, Greece Call for Respecting Sovereignty, Territorial Integrity

  • India and Greece called for following fundamental international principles of rule of law and respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, and denounced radicalisation, violent extremism and terrorism, in a clear signal of their growing convergence on key geopolitical challenges.
  • The issues figured prominently during talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias in Athens.
  • Jaishankar is on a three-day visit to Greece, the first tour by an Indian Foreign Minister to Athens in the last 18 years.
  • The two sides also noted with satisfaction the convergence of each other's vision for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific ensuring connectivity and growth for all in the region, the Ministry of External Affairs said after the talks that covered key bilateral, regional and global issue.

Indore, Surat Joint Winners of Smart Cities 2020; UP Wins 'State Award'

  • Indore and Surat were on Friday adjudged joint winners of the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry's Smart Cities Award 2020, while Uttar Pradesh secured the first position in the state awards category, tailed by Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
  • The awards were given based on a range of themes like social aspects, governance, culture, urban environment, sanitation, economy, built environment, water and urban mobility.
  • In 2019, Surat was the only winner among smart cities.
  • This is the first time that states have also been awarded for the overall performance of smart cities.

BJP Appoints Chiefs of Its Assam, Manipur New Units

  • The BJP named Bhabesh Kalita and Sharda Devi as presidents of its Assam and Manipur units respectively.
  • The appointments were made by BJP national president JP Nadda and come into immediate effect.
  • Kalita, who is a sitting MLA in the Assam assembly, will replace Ranjeet Kumar Dass, who became a minister in the newly-formed government in the state led by Himanta Biswa Sarma.
  • The BJP had won the recently held assembly polls in Assam.

Jaishankar to Travel to Greece and Italy

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will embark on a two-day bilateral visit to Greece to hold talks with his Greek counterpart. Following Greece, Jaishankar will travel to Italy to attend the G20 Ministerial meeting.
  • This is the first EAM-level visit to Greece in about 18 years, the one being in 2003.

Ladakh Administration Renovating Rezang La Memorial on Sino-Indian Border

  • The administration of the union territory of Ladakh and the Army is renovating the Rezang La war memorial on the Sino-Indian border where Indian troops fought the Chinese army during the 1962 war.
  • The UT administration along with the Indian Army is renovating the Rezang La memorial, situated in Chushul in Ladakh, and we hope for its timely completion this year, Lieutenant Governor R. K. Mathur said.
  • Mathur said that the 11 war monuments spread across Ladakh are reminders of the courage of Indian soldiers during their battles against enemy forces.

Prasar Bharati goes 100% Paperless

  • India's public broadcaster Prasar Bharati has gone 100% paperless, with all its centres functioning as e-offices.
  • This comes in less than two years since e-office was introduced in August 2019. Out of 577 Prasar Bharati centres across the country, 10% adopted e-office in 2019. By 2020, it was 74% of Prasar Bharati centres and the remaining 16% joined by June 18, 2021.

India Asks SCO to Frame Action Plan against Pak-based Terror Groups

  • India has proposed an action plan against the LeT and the JeM as part of the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which also includes as its members Pakistan where these two banned terrorist organisations are located as well as China, which had for years blocked the international listing of the chief of one of them.
  • India's proposal was suggested by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval at the 16th meeting of NSAs at Dushanbe in Tajikistan. India also pressed for the full implementation of UN resolutions and targeted sanctions against UN designated terrorist individuals and entitie.

  • The government of Odisha and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have joined hands to improve household food and nutritional security by strengthening livelihood initiatives, reaching thousands of state-supported Women's Self-Help Groups (WSHGs).

Ajit Doval Meets Russian NSA Nikolai Patrushev

  • National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev in Dushanbe ahead of a meeting of national security chiefs of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation that will also feature their counterparts from China and Pakistan.
  • The two sides exchanged opinions on the situation in Afghanistan and the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Patrushev and Doval discussed in detail further plans of the Russia-India interaction in the security sphere, cooperation among the security and law-enforcement agencies.

Mukul Roy among Nominees for Bengal Assembly PAC Membership

  • Senior TMC leader Mukul Roy was among the 14 MLAs who filed nominations for memberships of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the West Bengal assembly amid speculations that he may be appointed its chairman.
  • Roy, officially a BJP MLA from Krishnanagar Uttar, switched over to the TMC last week but did not resign from the assembly or disqualified under the anti-defection law.
  • The BJP has also submitted a list of six names for PAC memberships.

Business Standard among the Top 10 Trusted Media Brands in India

  • According to a survey by The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Business Standard is one of the top 10 trusted media brands in India.
  • The survey also said amid the coronavirus pandemic, legacy print brands and government broadcasters, DD News (Doo¬rdarshan) and All India Radio, retained high levels of trust among consumers in India. Print brands, in general, are more trusted than television brands, it added. Reuters Institute said that the pandemic stoked hunger for trusted news, and a clear majority of people want media organisations to be impartial and objective. The Times of India topped the list, followed by DD News, AIR, BBC and The Indian Express. Others in the top 10 include The Economic Times, Hindustan Times, The Hindu and CNN.

Rangasamy Submits List of Council of Ministers

  • After dissension among the principal allies over sharing of power played out over seven weeks since Puducherry's first NDA government was elected to power in May, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy submitted the list of the Council of Ministers to Lt. Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan. The AINRC and the BJP were unable to come to an agreement on sharing of Cabinet berths all these weeks.
  • The convention is for the Lt. Governor to forward the list to the Union Home Ministry, which would seek the President's nod.
  • Meanwhile, the Lt. Governor said the Cabinet headed by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy is scheduled to be sworn in on June 27.
