Women's T20 World Cup Semis: South Africa Creates History, Qualify for Final

  • A thrilling match saw South Africa deliver when it mattered to beat in-form England and march into the World Cup final against Australia.
  • The Proteas posted a very competitive first-innings score of 164/4 thanks to half-centuries from openers Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt.
  • And the momentum swung back and forth during England's chase, with England's openers getting off to a lightning start, Brits clinging on to four catches to remove each of England's top four, and Ayabonga Khaka taking three wickets in a match-changing over.
  • It all came down to Shabnim Ismail's final over, with England requiring 13 runs to win and they fell six runs short.
  • The result means that South Africa are through to their first-ever World Cup final in any format.

Spain's Sergio Ramos Announces Retirement from International Football

  • Paris Saint-Germain's and former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos announced his retirement from international football. Ramos who was part of Spain's World Cup and Euro winning teams had represented Real Madrid in La Liga and now plays for PSG in Ligue 1.
  • Ramos made his Spain debut in 2005 while still a teenager playing for Sevilla. He played in seven major tournaments for his country, winning three, but was left out of the squad by Luis Enrique for Euro 2020, played in 2021, and the 2022 World Cup. His last appearance for La Roja came on March 31, 2021, when he played four minutes in a 3-1 win over Kosovo.

Women's T20 World Cup: India Fail Again, Lose to AUS by 5 Runs in Semi-finals

  • India crashed to a defeat vs Australia in their semi-finals fixture of the Women's T20 World Cup 2023, at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town. Chasing a target of 173 runs, India reached 167/8 in 20 overs, with Harmanpreet Kaur's half-century going in vain, losing by five runs. The India captain slammed 52 runs off 34 balls, including six fours and a maximum. For Australia's bowling department, Darcie Brown and Ashleigh Gardner were in good form and took two wickets each respectively.
  • South Africa was the host country of the Women's T20 World Cup 2023.

Aiden Markram New Captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for IPL 2023 Season

  • South African batter Aiden Markram was appointed as the new skipper of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) team for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. Markram took over from former New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, who was released by the franchise after last season.
  • The Protea player was also part of the Sun Group-owned Sunrisers Eastern Cape franchise, which won the inaugural edition of the SA20 T20 League in 2023. There was speculation that Mayank Agarwal, who was bought for Rs. 8.5 crore by SRH could also be in contention but Markram has pipped the former Punjab Kings batter.

India Loses Asian Championships Due to WFI Controversy

  • In a big setback to India, the United World Wrestling shifted the Asian Championships from New Delhi to Astana, Kazakhstan. The tournament has been postponed from March 28-April 2 to April 7-15.
  • The UWW took this step after taking cognisance of the pending sexual harassment and financial irregularity complaints against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Vignesh and Visakh NR Become India's First Brothers to Become Grandmasters

  • After winning the 24th NordWest Cup 2023 at Bad Zwischenahn in Germany and defeating German IM Ilja Schneider, Indian chess player Vignesh N.R. became the 80th Grandmaster of India. The Chennai boy reached the milestone after crossing 2500 in the live ratings. Vignesh's elder brother Visakh N.R. had become India's 59th GM in 2019. Thus, Visakh and Vignesh became India's first brothers who are Grandmasters.

India's 14-year-old Tilottama Sen Wins Bronze Medal in Women's 10m Air Rifle at ISSF World Cup

  • Indian teen Tilottama Sen won bronze medal in the women's 10m Air Rifle at ISSF World Cup at Cairo in Egypt. The 14-year-old Sen won the second bronze for India, fifth overall after ending the top eight ranking round with a score of 262. She missed out on the gold medal match by the narrowest possible margin of 0.1. Great Britain's Seonaid Mcintosh won the gold and Switzerland's Olympic Champion Nina Christen won the silver.

Dmitry Dmitruk to Coach Boxers

  • The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) roped in Dmitry Dmitruk as the team's foreign coach for the next two years.
  • Dmitruk, who has served as the high performance coach of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association as well as the Irish national junior and youth teams for the last 12 years, will lead the Indian men's and women's teams for the upcoming elite competitions, including the World Championships.
  • Dmitruk has played a key role in elevating Ireland's performances and nurturing young talent.

Tata Group Bags Title Rights for Women's Premier League

  • Tata Group bagged the title rights for the inaugural Women's Premier League beginning in Mumbai on March 4.
  • As per BCCI, Tata secured the rights for five years. The Indian multinational conglomerate had last year (2022) replaced Vivo as the title sponsor for the Indian Premier League.
