Wriddhiman Saha Retires

  • Bengal stalwart Wriddhiman Saha retired from all forms of cricket after playing the last group-stage match of the Ranji Trophy on February 1.
  • Saha played 40 Test matches for India and was widely regarded as the best keeper in the country in the red-ball format. His career never took off due to his batting abilities, which were never at par with the likes of MS Dhoni, who saw an incredible rise in his stature at the same time. After Dhoni retired from Test cricket, Saha was able to fix his place in the line-up but for only a brief time as the selectors and management decided to fast-track Rishabh Pant.
  • Wriddhiman Saha's biggest moment perhaps came in the Indian Premier League when he hit a century in the IPL final against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2014 season. Despite Saha's century, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) was not able to win the tournament.
  • Saha played IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Titans.

ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup, India Lifts the World Cup

  • The Indian U19 women's cricket team scripted history by securing a dominant nine-wicket victory over South Africa in the ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup 2025 final at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This triumph marked India's second consecutive title in the tournament, solidifying its status as a powerhouse in women's cricket at the youth level. The star of the match, Gongadi Trisha, delivered an all-round performance, guiding India to a comprehensive win.

Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers Clinch Hockey India League 2024-25 Title

  • The exhilarating Men's Hockey India League 2024-25 season came to an end as Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers defeated Hyderabad Toofans 4-3 in the all-important final, in front of a jam-packed Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela. Gonzalo Peillat and Amandeep Lakra) scored for Hyderabad Toofans while Jugraj Singh and Sam Lane found the back of the net to secure the title for the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers.
  • With this victory, Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers also claimed the INR 3 crore prize money, while the Hyderabad Toofans received INR 2 crore for finishing as runners-up.

Sachin Tendulkar Bestowed with BCCI's Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Former India captain and legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar was bestowed with BCCI's Lifetime Achievement award at the annual gala. Tendulkar, who played 664 matches for India, holds the record for the highest number of Test and ODI runs in history. However, he played only one T20I in his stellar career.
  • Tendulkar the recipient of the C K Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award for the year 2024" who has played 200 Tests and 463 ODIs are also the highest by any player in the history of the game.
  • Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin was given a special award for his contribution to Indian cricket.
  • Jasprit Bumrah, the pace spearhead, received the Polly Umrigar Award for Best Male International Cricketer.
  • Meanwhile, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) was honoured for being the Best Association in domestic cricket. In 2024, Mumbai had won the Ranji Trophy for the 42nd time.

Govt. Approves 88-member Indian Contingent for 2025 Asian Winter Games

  • The Government of India approved the participation of the Indian contingent at the 9th Asian Winter Games (AWG) 2025, set to take place from February 7 to 14 in Harbin, China. A total of 88 members, including 59 athletes and 29 team officials, will represent India at the event.
  • This marks the first time the government is providing full financial support under the Assistance to National Sports Federations (ANSF) Scheme for athletes competing in Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Figure Skating, Short Track Speed Skating, and Speed Skating (Long Track).

Mohammad Rizwan to Lead Pakistan squad for the Champions Trophy 2025

  • Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) revealed its squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 as Mohammad Rizwan leads the 15-man contingent. As announced, Rizwan's Pakistan side will be without Saim Ayub while veteran batter Fakhar Zaman returned to the squad. Pakistan is the defending champion of the tournament and won the last edition in 2017, beating India in the final.

No Captains' Meet, Photoshoot for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

  • The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will not feature the traditional captains' meet and official photoshoot, a practice typically held in the host country ahead of major ICC tournaments.
  • This decision marks a departure from past editions and is attributed to logistical challenges.
  • The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that neither the ICC nor the board had announced an official opening ceremony. However, an event supported by the ICC will take place in Lahore on February 16, three days before the tournament's first match.
  • One of the key reasons for skipping the captains' press conference and photoshoot is the tournament's hybrid model, which involves matches being played across four venues in two countries.

Fourth Mumbai Open to Kickstart from February 1

  • The fourth edition of the Mumbai Open was launched at the iconic Cricket Club of India.
  • The tournament is being organised by the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) and will be held at the hard courts of the Cricket Club of India (CCI).
  • The WTA 125 tournament will commence on February 1 with the qualifying round, while the main draw of the event will begin on February 3 with the finals scheduled on February 9, at the Cricket Club of India.

Dream Sports Foundation Announces Second Edition of U-17 Football Championship

  • Dream Sports Foundation announced the second edition of their under-17 club football tournament, following the success of the first edition of the Dream Sports Championship.
  • Set to begin in February 2025, the championship will be hosted across six cities, featuring Regional Rounds and a National Final, providing a platform for young footballers to showcase their skills.
  • The 2025 tournament will introduce a girls' U-17 Championship at the National Finals, highlighting DSF's commitment to promoting diversity in grassroots sports. The tournament will also assist the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) in identifying potential youth talent for the national team.
  • The first phase, scheduled from February 2-8, 2025, will see matches taking place in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru. This phase will set the stage for intense competition as teams vie for a spot in the next round. The second phase, from February 10-14, 2025, will shift the action to Guwahati and Goa, where the remaining teams will battle it out for a place in the National Finals.

Australia Clinches ICC Women's Championship Trophy

  • Australia has once again asserted its dominance in women's cricket by winning the ICC Women's Championship for the third consecutive time. The team was presented with the prestigious ICC Women's Championship Trophy in Melbourne after emerging victorious in the 10-team competition that serves as a pathway to the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025. Captain Alyssa Healy received the trophy from Cricket Australia Chair and ICC Director Mike Baird.
  • The championship, first introduced in 2014, has played a crucial role in expanding the women's game and ensuring more frequent bilateral series. The 2022-25 cycle saw Australia securing the top position with 39 points from 24 matches, followed by India, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, who also qualified directly for the 2025 Women's World Cup. The remaining teams will compete in a Qualifier tournament to secure the final two spots.
  • The first two editions (2014-16 & 2017-20) featured 8 teams:
  • Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies.

Manush Shah, Diya Chitale Crowned National Table Tennis Champions

  • The 2025 Senior National Table Tennis Championships concluded at the Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium in Surat, witnessing thrilling performances. Manush Shah and Diya Chitale claimed the men's and women's singles titles, respectively, showcasing remarkable skill and resilience. Both champions represented the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and delivered exceptional performances in their respective finals.
  • Manush Shah defeated Payas Jain with a 4-1 scoreline (10-12, 11-6, 11-6, 12-10, 11-8).

Khelo India Winter Games 2025: Ladakh Finishes on Top

  • Host Ladakh topped the Khelo India Winter Games after securing two gold medals on the final day, swelling their tally to four, as the first phase of the tournament concluded.
  • Thirteen gold medals were at stake in the first phase. The second and final phase will be held in J&K's Gulmarg from February 22 to 25.
