Ursula von der Leyen Unveils New European Commission Team

  • The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, presented her proposed new team of commissioners after negotiations with the EU's member states.
  • The European Commission is the EU's equivalent of a cabinet, and each commissioner is responsible for a different portfolio.
  • Out of a total of 26 proposed commissioners, 10 are women and 16 are men.
  • When she was elected European Commission president for a second five-year term in July (2024), Ms von der Leyen has asked member countries to put forward two names, a man and a woman, as candidates.

World Bank Pledges Additional Support of $2 Billion for Bangladesh

  • The World Bank said it could mobilise an additional USD 2 billion in financing to Bangladesh in this fiscal year to support critical reforms, flood response, better air quality and health.
  • World Bank Country Director Abdoulaye Seck pledged the assistance when he called on interim government's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka. He said the World Bank was committed to increasing lending to Bangladesh in this fiscal year to help the reform agenda of the interim government.
  • His remarks came days after the US Agency for International Development-Bangladesh on Sunday said it would provide USD 202.25 million in aid to Bangladesh.

Jordan's King Appoints New Prime Minister after Parliamentary Elections

  • Jordan's King Abdullah II accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh following parliamentary elections. Al-Khasawneh, a seasoned diplomat who had been in office since October 2020, resigned after legislative elections.
  • Jafar Hassan, a technocrat and former Planning Minister was appointed as the new Prime Minister.

India at G20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting in Cuiabá, Brazil

  • India participated in the G20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting in Cuiabá, Brazil. Led by Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Ram Nath Thakur, the Indian delegation engaged in bilateral discussions with several global partners to enhance agricultural cooperation and address market access issues.
  • Ram Nath Thakur highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India prioritises agricultural development. Our approach not only focuses on productivity but also ensures economic, social, environmental sustainability, enhancing farmer prosperity and embodying a comprehensive vision for development. He further mentioned that India is implementing the world's largest food-based safety net programs to ensure food security and nutrition.
  • The meeting centered around discussions on four key priority areas for global agriculture: First, sustainability of agriculture and food systems in their multiple paths; Second, enhancing international trade's contribution to food security and nutrition; Third, elevating the essential role of family farmers, smallholders, indigenous peoples and local communities in sustainable, resilient and inclusive agriculture and food systems; Fourth, promote the integration of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture into local and global value chains.

India sends US$ 1 Million Humanitarian Relief to Vietnam as Operation Sadbhav

  • The Government of India has launched Operation Sadbhav to provide humanitarian relief/assistance to countries affected by Typhoon Yagi. This will Express Solidarity with Storm-Hit Nations- Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos.
  • India has extended assistance to the Government of Vietnam to provide relief to the affected communities in northern Vietnam impacted by the natural disaster.
  • A consignment of 35 tons of humanitarian assistance, including water purification items, water containers, blankets, kitchen utensils, and solar lanterns, among others, was airlifted to Vietnam today by a special aircraft.

India Participates in BRICS Literature Forum 2024 in Russia

  • India took part in the BRICS Literature Forum 2024 in Kazan, Russia. The event, inaugurated by Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin, focused on the theme 'World Literature in the New Reality: Dialogue of Traditions, National Values, and Cultures'.
  • This forum brought together writers, poets, philosophers, artists, and scholars from BRICS countries. India was represented by Madhav Kaushik, President of Sahitya Akademi, and Dr. K. Sreenivasarao, Secretary of Sahitya Akademi. In the plenary session, Madhav Kaushik emphasised the significance of literature in fostering unity and cooperation globally.
  • In a session titled "Meet the Authors from India," with the theme "Volga to Ganga: Celebration of Tradition and Multiculturalism," Dr. K. Sreenivasarao discussed the influence of river-based cultures in promoting multiculturalism and social progress. Madhav Kaushik further elaborated on how traditional literature in both India and Russia embodies rich cultural values.

Mexico's Senate Passes Controversial Judicial Reform Bill

  • Mexico became the world's first country to allow voters to elect judges at all levels after protesters invaded the Upper House and suspended debate on the issue. The reform was approved with 86 votes in favour and 41 against, garnering the two-thirds majority needed to amend the Constitution.
  • The new Chief of Government of Mexico City, Carla Brugada recognised the senators who fulfilled the popular mandate and voted to approve the Judicial Reform that will allow the people to elect their judges, magistrates and ministers, and will make justice more accessible to all.

Switzerland Crowned as Best Country in the World

  • In a new survey which is called "Best countries for 2024" Switzerland was crowned as the best country in the world. Switzerland achieved this fate in the third year successively. This survey included 89 countries for the results.
  • European countries made up the majority of the top 25
  • In the ranking, Switzerland is followed by Japan, the United States of America, Canada and Australia
  • Only Japan, Singapore, China and South Korea managed to the top 25 from Asia
  • The United Arab Emirates and Qatar were the only two Middle-Eastern countries that got the 17 and 25th positions in the survey.
