IOA in Search of New Apparel Sponsor

  • After parting ways with Chinese sportswear company Li Ning to "honour public sentiment", the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is hoping to find a new kit sponsor for the country's Olympic-bound contingent by the end of this month.
  • The IOA dropped Li Ning as its official kit sponsor for the Olympics and stated that the country's athletes will wear unbranded apparel during the Tokyo Games, scheduled to be held from July 23 to August 8.
  • But IOA president Narinder Batra said that search is on for a new sponsor within the limited available time.

India's First Ever Taekwondo Entry at Paralympics

  • Aruna Tanwar has been awarded a wild card entry for the upcoming Tokyo Paralympic Games, which will make her the first Indian to compete in the global event, the national federation said. Indian Taekwondo president Namdev Shirgaonkar said that Aruna received the wild card based on her exemplary past performances. She is the first taekwondo athlete from India to qualify for the Paralympics.

IOC Announces Names of Refugee Athletes for Tokyo Olympics 2021

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the list of 29 refugee athletes who will compete at the Tokyo Olympics under the Olympic flag.
  • During the opening ceremony on July 23, the refugee athletes -- from 13 host National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competing in 12 sports -- will enter the stadium "in second position after Greece".
  • Kenya's Tegla Loroupe, Olympian and former marathon world-record holder, will be the team's Chef de Mission.

Chhetri Overtakes Messi

  • Indian football talisman Sunil Chhetri has surpassed Argentina's global superstar Lionel Messi to become the second-highest active international goal-scorer with 74 strikes, adding another feather to his illustrious career.
  • Chhetri achieved the staggering feat with his brace against Bangladesh in the joint preliminary qualifying round match for 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
  • The seasoned striker, who helped India register their first win in six years in World Cup qualifiers, now stands only behind Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo (103) in the active international goal-scorer list.
  • Chhetri leads Barcelona star Messi by two goals and sits a place above Ali Mabkhout of the UAE, who is third on the list with 73 strikes to his name.

TCS to be Title Sponsor for the London Marathon

  • IT services major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced that it will become the title partner of the London Marathon from 2022, following this year's race on October 3.
  • Building on its success as the technology partner since 2016, TCS said that it will continue to partner with the London Marathon in the innovative use of technology to further enhance the marathon experience and promote a healthy lifestyle. This includes further enriching and personalising experiences for all participants, spectators and sponsors by harnessing the power of data, making the event even more accessible and inclusive, building the connections that unite communities, amplifying fundraising and inspiring healthy activity.

Railways to Monetise 15 Sports Complexes

  • Facing a cash-crunch owing to rising maintenance costs, the Railway Board has identified 15 sports facilities across the country for techno-economic studies for commercial development.
  • These facilities are Railway Sports Complex in DLW (Varanasi), Chennai, Kolkata, Raebareli, Maligaon in Guwahati, Kapurthala and Secunderabad; Indoor Stadium at Parel in Mumbai and Patna, Railway Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Bahala in Kolkata and Mahalaxmi in Mumbai; Cricket Stadium at Yelahanka in Bengaluru and Lucknow; Gorakhpur Stadium in Gorakhpur.
  • Effectively, this move will see Railways selling off these facilities to private players thereby ending all sporting activities.
  • The All India Railwaymen's Federation (AIRF) had written to the chairman, Railway Board, protesting the move.

French Open 2021

  • Defending champion Iga Swiatek held off a fierce challenge from Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk to reach the French Open quarter-finals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. The eighth-seeded Pole has now won 22 consecutive sets at Roland Garros going into her clash with Greek 17th seed Maria Sakkari as she bids to become the first woman to retain the Roland Garros title since Justine Henin in 2007.

Indian Women Archery Team Eye Tokyo Ticket

  • The Indian women's archery team, led by former World No. 1 Deepika Kumari to compete in their final Olympic qualification event on June 20.
  • The women's trio of Deepika, Ankita Bhakat and Komalika Bari will have to finish in the top-3 to clinch the last available berth for the Tokyo Olympics.

Sifan Hassan Smashes Women's 10,000m World Record

  • According to World Athletics, Dutch long-distance runner Sifan Hassan broke the women's 10,000 m world record, clocking 29 minutes 6.82 seconds.
  • She achieved the feat in a Continental Tour, meeting on home soil in Hengelo.
  • Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana held the previous record of 29:17.45, set at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Roger Federer Pulls Out of French Open 2021

  • Roger Federer withdrew from the French Open to give himself a chance to recover after emerging from a tight third-round victory that lasted about 3 1/2 hours.
  • After two knee surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation, it's important that I listen to my body and make sure I don't push myself too quickly on my road to recovery," the 20-time Grand Slam champion said in a statement released by the French tennis federation.
