Andy Murray Picked for British Team to Defend Gold

  • Two-time defending champion Andy Murray will attempt to win his third consecutive Olympic gold medal after being named to the British team. Murray will compete in singles and doubles at the Tokyo Olympics, his fourth games overall. Murray is the only men's player with two gold medals in singles. He beat Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in the final at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games after topping Roger Federer in straight sets for gold at the 2012 London Olympics.

Ronaldo Becomes Joint Top-scorer in Men's International Football

  • Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo has become the joint top-scorer in men's international football.
  • He achieved the feat in Portugal's Euro 2020 game against France at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
  • Ronaldo scored two goals from the spot against France and as a result, he now has 109 goals from 176 matches for Portugal.
  • The striker is currently tied with Iran's legend Ali Daei, who also scored 109 goals from 149 matches.

Anirban Lahiri g Qualifies for Tokyo Games

  • Seasoned Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri qualified for his second successive Olympic Games by grabbing the last available spot in the final Tokyo Games Rankings for men.
  • The Indian made the cut at the 60th spot, the last quota available as per the Games rankings.
  • Lahiri is lone Indian golfer in the men's field as of now and women player Aditi Ashok should also comfortably make the grade as she currently is 44th on the list.

India's Olympic Theme Song Launched

  • India's "Official Olympic Theme Song" was launched ahead of the Summer Games in July-August.
  • Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju was the chief guest at the event.
  • The event was organised by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and attended by its president, Secretary-General, Deputy Chef De Mission, Sports Secretary and DG Sports Authority of India (SAI).
  • Mohit Chauhan has composed and sung the song titled "Lakshya Tera Samne Hai".

New Zealand Wins Inaugural ICC World Test Championship

  • A tenacious New Zealand lifted the inaugural World Test Championship title with a comfortable eight-wicket win over India on the sixth and final day of the marquee final at The Hampshire Bowl, Suthampton.
  • It is first major ICC trophy for the Black Caps, who had ended runners-up at the 2019 ODI World Cup after losing the final to hosts England on boundary count. They had also lost the 2015 World Cup final to Australia.

Manpreet Singh is Captain of Men's Hockey Team for Olympics

  • Midfielder Manpreet Singh was named captain of the 16-member Olympic-bound Indian men's hockey team, while experienced defenders, Birendra Lakra and Harmanpreet Singh, were named vice-captains.
  • This will be Manpreet's third Olympics.
  • Under Manpreet's captaincy, the Indian team won the Asia Cup in 2017, the Asian Champions Trophy in 2018 and the FIH Series Final in 2019.

  • The Uttar Pradesh Government announced that the shooting rage in Noida will be named after Chandro Tomar, popularly known as 'Shooter Dadi'.
  • Chandro Tomar passed away on April 30 in Meerut.

Tokyo Olympics 2021: Maximum of 10,000 Spectators to be Allowed for Each Event

  • Tokyo Olympics organising committee confirmed that the spectator limit for the Games has been set at 50 per cent of venue capacity, up to a maximum of 10,000 people.
  • The decision on the Paralympic Games will be made by July 16. Residents of Japan will be allowed to attend the Games this summer.
  • During a meeting held between the five parties, the IOC, IPC, Tokyo 2020, Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Government of Japan agreed for the spectator limit for the Olympic Games to be set at 50 per cent of venue capacity, up to a maximum of 10,000 people at all venues, taking into consideration the government's restrictions on public events.
  • Students in the schools' spectator programme and their supervisors will not be considered in these limits and will be treated separately, as they are not spectators.

Breaking Asia Record, Toor Books Ticket for Tokyo Olympics

  • Breaking Asia's record, Punjab's shot putter, Tejinder Pal Singh Toor, qualified for the Tokyo Olympics at Indian Grand Prix-4 held at National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala.
  • Toor hurled the iron ball at 21.49 m in his first attempt itself and booked the ticket for Tokyo. The qualifying mark for shot put was 21.10 m.
