Finland's Emma Terho Elected to the IOC Board

Olympic ice hockey medalist Emma Terho has been elected to represent the world's athletes on the IOC's executive board.
The International Olympic Committee said that Terho won a vote of its athletes' commission members to be their chairwoman. The position comes with a seat on the IOC board.
Terho was standing against pole vaulter world record holder Yelena Isinbaeva, who was elected an IOC member by athletes at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics at the height of the Russian doping scandal.
Terho represented Finland at five Winter Olympics and twice took home a bronze medal.
She replaces Zimbabwean swimmer Kirsty Coventry on the IOC board.

Srinagar to Get International Football Stadium

The centuries-old Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar will soon see a facelift and is expected to host national and international football events. It is being built on the norms of FIFA with the facility of night play too.
Kashmir is known for its football craze and this game has always been a favorite sport of the Kashmiri people for ages. Now, this world-class one of the best football stadiums in the country will undoubtedly promote football in Kashmir and the talent of Kashmir will get an international platform.
The National Projects Construction Corporation (NPCC) is building this stadium at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar. This project is worth around 44 crores. Funding for this project is being provided by the Ministry of Youth Services and Sport, Government of India.

Sjoerd Marijne Steps Down as India Women's Hockey Team Coach

Hours after the Indian women's hockey team finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympics and won the hearts of the fans back home, coach Sjoerd Marijne announced that he would be stepping down as the coach of the women's national hockey team.
The Dutch coach had taken charge of the team for the first time in 2017.

Silver for Ravi, Heartbreak for Punia and Vinesh in Tokyo

Ravi Dahiya became only the second Indian wrestler to win a silver medal at the Olympic Games but Vinesh Phogat's redemption dream came crashing down after a shock quarter-final exit and Deepak Punia let slip a bronze in the last 10 seconds of his play-off bout.
There were huge expectations from Dahiya for a gold medal after his phenomenal semi-final victory, but the reigning world champion Zavur Uguev of Russian Olympic Committee dashed those hopes with a comfortable 7-4 win in the men's freestyle 57 kg title clash.
Dahiya had lost to Uguev at the 2019 World Championship also.

India Loses Tokyo Olympics Women's Hockey Bronze Medal

It was a heartbreak for heroic Indian women hockey team as they lost their bronze medal match 4-3 to Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics . Rani Rampal's girls were in tears as they failed to win their first-ever Olympic medal by a whisker.

Ryan Crouser Sets Olympic Record

Ryan Crouser broke his own Olympic record on his way to defending his shot put title in Tokyo.
On his last attempt, Crouser went 23.30 meters (76 feet, 5 inches) to earn the first track and field gold medal for the American men at the Tokyo Games.
U.S. teammate Joe Kovacs finished second and Tomas Walsh of New Zealand was third.

Indian Men's Team Wins Bronze, First Olympics Medal after 41 Years

Indian men's hockey team created history at the Tokyo Olympics by winning a bronze, their first medal in 41 years from the sport. Manpreet Singh's side defeated Germany 5-4 in a thrilling third-place clash to come away with the bronze medal. It was a sensational comeback by the Indian side as they came back from 1-3 down in the 2nd quarter to win 5-4.

Lovlina Borgohain Signs Off with Boxing Bronze

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) signed off with a bronze medal in the Olympic Games after a comprehensive 0-5 loss to reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli, bringing an end to the country's campaign in the sport.

India Women Lose to Argentina in Hockey Semis

The Indian women's hockey team put up a gritty performance but it was not enough to secure a maiden Olympic final berth as it lost 1-2 to world no.2 Argentina in a hard-fought semi-final of the ongoing Games.
India still has a chance to win the bronze medal as they will take on Great Britain in the third-fourth place play-off match.

Russia's Svetlana Romashina Sets Record with 6th Olympic Gold

Russia's Svetlana Romashina claimed her record sixth Olympic gold medal in artistic swimming, teaming with Svetlana Kolesnichenko to win the duet.
The Russians were heavy favorites in a sport they have dominated for more than two decades. Their last Olympic loss in what was then known as synchronized swimming came at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
Romashina had been tied with fellow Russians Anastasia Davydova and Natalia Ishchenko with five golds medals apiece.

FIFA Bans its Former Stand-in President Issa Hayatou for 1 Year

FIFA banned its former interim president Issa Hayatou for alleged wrongdoing in a commercial deal for African soccer.
"Hayatou, who was Confederation of African Football president for 29 years until 2017, was banned for one year for a breach of "duty of loyalty" rules, said FIFA.
Hayatou was a long-time FIFA vice president and its stand-in president for several months between Sepp Blatter's suspension from office in October 2015 and the election of Gianni Infantino four months later.
The 74-year-old Cameroonian lost the CAF presidency in 2017 in an election against Ahmad Ahmad of Madagascar, whose campaign had been supported by Infantino.

New World Record by Warholm in 400m Hurdles

Karsten Warholm of Norway has broken his own world record to win the 400-meter hurdles gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
The two-time world champion ran 45.94 seconds to win a final where six of the first seven finishers set either national or area records.
It's the second time in just over a month that Warholm has lowered the record. He set the previous mark of 46.70 at Oslo on July 1.
Rai Benjamin of the United States took the silver in 46.17 and Alison dos Santos of Brazil took the bronze.

Anurag Thakur Launches Paralympic Theme Song "Kar De Kamaal Tu"

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Singh Thakur launched the theme song for the Indian Paralympic contingent in New Delhi. The song is titled "Kar De Kamaal Tu". The composer and singer of the song is Sanjeev Singh, a Divyang cricket player from Lucknow. 54 para-sportspersons across 9 sports disciplines are participating in Paralympic Games in Tokyo, beginning August 24, 2021.

US Clinches CONCACAF Gold Cup in Football

USA's men's national team stunned Mexico with a 1-0 victory in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup final in Las Vegas to clinch the title and pull off a big upset.
The game was won by a thrilling set-piece goal netted by defender Miles Robinson with three minutes remaining in extra time. Robinson beat Mexico's Edson Alvarez to a wonderful pass by Kellyn Acosta in the middle of the Mexican penalty area in the 117th minute to seal off the victory.
The United States earned their seventh Gold Cup championship, their first since 2017, tying Mexico for the most in the 15-year history of the competition. After winning the CONCACAF Nations League in June, this is the USA's second major final triumph over Mexico.

Debutant Neeraj Chopra Qualifies for Final in First Attempt

Top Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra, making his Olympics debut at Tokyo, threw a massive 86.65 m in his very first attempt and easily qualified for the final. The qualification mark for the final was set at 83.5 m but Chopra didn't need a second attempt to reach the mark. Part of Group A of the qualification in javelin, no one could come close to Chopra's mark with 2017 World Champion Johannes Vetter emerging second best with a throw of 85.64 m.
