Delhi High Court Appoints Committee to Run IOA

The Delhi High Court appointed a three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA) to run the day-to-day affairs of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Saying that "compliance with the Sports Code is non-negotiable", Justice Najmi Waziri and Justice Manmohan gave the temporary reins of the IOA to Justice (retired) Anil R. Dave, former Chief Election Commissioner S. Y. Quraishi and former external affairs secretary Vikas Swarup.
The CoA has been entrusted to prepare the IOA's new constitution as per the Sports Code and the court rulings, and prepare the electoral roll in order to hold fresh elections. The CoA would be assisted by three sportspersons — former shooter Abhinav Bindra, former long jumper Anju Bobby George and archer L. Bombayla Devi.

Himachal Girl Set to Represent India in World Racketlon Championship

Himachal girl Dhritih Kandpal, daughter of Lt Col Divik Kandpal from Nahan in Sirmaur district, has made the state proud. She has been selected to represent India in Juniors and Seniors category in World Racketlon Championship scheduled in Vienna and Graz in Austria from August 19 to August 29, 2022.
Dhritih is No 1 ranked player in Gujarat in Women category and also a winner of the Gujarat State Squash Championship in Under-15 category as well as Women category in 2021.

Bangladesh Names Shakib al Hasan as Skipper for Asia and World Cup

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed Shakib Al Hasan as the T20I skipper until the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.
Nurul Hasan had taken over in T20Is from long-time white-ball captain Mahmudullah for Bangladesh's previous assignment, in Zimbabwe, before being sidelined by a fractured finger.
Mosaddek Hossain then captained the team in the last of three T20Is in Zimbabwe, as Bangladesh went down 2-1. Thereafter, Bangladesh had also lost the ODIs that followed in Zimbabwe, under Tamim Iqbal.
Bangladesh missed the initial deadline for naming the squad, while the board sorted out the Shakib sponsorship issue. Bangladesh will be one of six teams contesting the main round of the Asia Cup, along with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and a qualifier.

FIFA Suspends All India Football Federation (AIFF)

In a major setback and embarrassment for the country, world football governing body FIFA suspended India for "undue influence from third parties" and said the U-17 Women's World Cup "cannot currently be held in India as planned." The country is scheduled to host its first FIFA event from October 11-30. This is the first time the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been banned by FIFA in its 85 year history.
The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes.
The suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee has been repealed and the AIFF administration regains full control of the AIFF's daily affairs.
A ban on India was on the cards after the Supreme Court removed Praful Patel as AIFF president on May 18 for not holding elections due in December 2020.

First Edition of Women's IPL to be Held in March 2023

The first edition of Women Indian Premier League will be starting from March 2023 to be held in a one-month window and in all likelihood with five teams. The BCCI bigwigs have discussed the issue and a March window has been found for the tournament after the Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa.
Both BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah had confirmed that 2023 is the year when WIPL would start. A lot of cricket lovers believe that WIPL will bring in a revolution and the standard of women's cricket in India will have a quantum leap. It is understood that teams like Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings have all expressed their interest in buying teams.

Meghalaya to Host 2nd Edition of North East Olympics

Meghalaya will be hosting the upcoming North East Olympics Games beginning October 30 till November 6, 2022 in Shillong.
The maiden Olympic games of the region were held in Manipur in October 2018, but the pandemic thwarted the second edition scheduled to be held in Arunachal Pradesh and hence, this year's (2022) North East Olympic Games 2.0 in Shillong strives to bridge the long gap for aspiring sportsperson of the region to improve themselves.
Participants will be competing in the following disciplines namely archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, football, judo, karate, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, wushu, cycling (Mountain Bike), golf, weightlifting and wrestling.

Tamara Walcott Breaks Powerlifting Guinness World Record

Tamara Walcott, a female powerlifter from Maryland in the United States broke Guinness Worlds Record (GWR) for the heaviest cumulative lift for bench/squat and press in competition (female) after lifting a total of 737.5 kg (1,620.4 lb) across three compound lifts - the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift.
She was honoured at the 2022 World Raw Powerlifting Federation American Pro in Manassas, Virginia in July 2022.
Walcott started powerlifting four years ago when she realized that she cannot invest time in baseball or basketball. Initially, she was aiming for weight loss and general fitness, and not setting new world records.

Major Dhyanchand Stadium to Host Phase 1 of 1st Khelo India Women's Hockey League U-16

Following the success of the Khelo India Women's Hockey League (U-21) held over three phases earlier this year (2022), a similar league for U-16 girls is scheduled to start on August 16 at the Major Dhyanchand Stadium in the national capital.
Phase 1 of the 1st Khelo India Women's Hockey League (U-16) is scheduled from August 16 to 23 where a total of 16 teams across the country are participating. A total of 56 matches will be played in Phase 1 and over 300 players will compete.
Phase 1 and 2 of the Khelo India Women's Hockey League (U-16) will be in round-robin format. The final ranking of teams will be determined after the completion of first 2 phases. Phase 3 will consist of classification matches where each team will play a minimum of 3 matches.

Manisha Kalyan, Sunil Chhetri Named AIFF Footballers of the Year 2021-22

Indian men's national football team skipper Sunil Chhetri and women's team midfielder Manisha Kalyan were chosen as the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) footballers of the year for the 2021-22 season.
Chhetri and Manisha were nominated for the award by their respective national coaches, Igor Stimac and Thomas Dennerby.
Chhetri scored four goals from as many appearances for the national team this year, raising his international goals tally to 84 - only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi among active footballers. This is the seventh time Chhetri was named the men's footballer of the year and the first since 2018.
The AIFF also announced Martina Thokchom and Vikram Partap Singh as the emerging players for the season.

Bhavani Devi Bags Gold at Commonwealth Fencing Senior Women's Championship

Indian ace fencer Bhavani Devi won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2022 in the Senior Women's Sabre Individual category.
She defeated Veronika Vasileva of Australia 15-10 to win the title in London, the UK.
Bhavani Devi scripted history by becoming the lone Indian fencer to qualify for Tokyo Olympics after she reached the quarter-final of the 2020 Fencing World Cup in Hungary. She qualified through the adjusted Official Ranking Method (AOR).
