CAQM Reiterates to Central/State Govts to Strictly Implement Actions under GRAP in view of Air Qu...

Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region (NCR) Delhi and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) reiterated to all implementing agencies of the Central and State Governments to strictly implement actions under Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in view of the air quality index. GRAP is a set of emergency measures taken to reduce air pollution.
The Commission also urged citizens to cooperate in adherence to the Citizen Charter of the respective stages and assist in the effective implementation of the GRAP measures to improve the overall Air Quality in the region. As the air quality has reached "poor" category again, actions under Stage I of the GRAP need to be intensified by all concerned.
The Commission is reviewing measures undertaken towards abatement of air pollution and also closely monitoring air quality parameters in NCR.

Wildlife Board Approves New Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh Wildlife Board approved a new reserve for tigers of Panna Tiger Reserve (PTR), one-fourth of which would get submerged due to the linking of the Ken-Betwa Rivers.
The 2,339 square kilometres new tiger reserve, to be called Durgavati Tiger Reserve, will spread across Narisinghpur, Damoh and Sagar districts. A green corridor linking PTR with Durgavati will be developed for the natural movement of the tigers to the new reserve.
As part of a wildlife management plan for Panna in wake of the Ken-Betwa River linking project, the NTCA had asked Uttar Pradesh and MP governments to notify new tiger reserves. The two state governments, with the Centre, are implementing a Rs. 44,605 crore river-linking project to end the water crisis in Bundelkhand region.

Wildlife Population Decline by 69% Worldwide Since 1970

Wildlife populations monitored across the globe declined by a massive 69% between 1970 and 2018, according to the WWF's Living Planet Report (LPR) 2022.
Featuring almost 32,000 populations of 5,230 species, the Living Planet Index (LPI) provided in the report shows it is within tropical regions that monitored vertebrate wildlife populations are plummeting at a staggering rate.
Latin America and the Caribbean regions have seen the largest decline of monitored wildlife populations globally-- an average decline of 94% during the period.
Wildlife populations have dipped by 66% in Africa and 55% in the Asia Pacific. Freshwater populations have declined by 83% on average compared to other species groups.

India's First Sanctuary for Endangered Slender Loris to be Set Up in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu government notified the first Indian sanctuary for the endangered Slender Loris in Karur and Dindigul districts. The announcement was made by the Chief Minister's Office.
A total of 11,806 hectares in the forest areas of the Karur and Dindigul districts would be merged to form the Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary, the first of its kind in India. These mammals are also protected under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
Supriya Sahu, the Additional Chief Secretary of Environment, Climate Change & Forests, said that the move by the TN government was, great news for the conservation of these shy & enigmatic mammals.
Slender Loris is listed as an endangered species according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The survival of the species depends on its habitat improvement, conservation efforts and mitigation of threats.
Slender Loris is a small nocturnal mammal that spends most of its life on trees.

Mumbai Airport Makes 100% Switch to Green Energy

Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) entirely switched to green sources for its energy consumption needs, making it one of India's 100 per cent sustainable airports.
Notably, the CSMIA was the first in India to launch hybrid technology that solely runs on green energy since April 2022. This sustainable initiative undertaken by the CSMIA is part of the airport's efforts that reduces its carbon footprint and further propels its journey towards 'Net Zero' emissions.
The aviation sector globally has a huge role to play in strengthening sustainability pillars like environment, social and economic.
Out of the total 100 per cent needs, the CSMIA procures around 5 per cent of the airport's electricity requirement through its onsite solar generation and the rest 95 per cent from other green sources such as hydro and wind energy.
