FIFA World Cup 2022 Messi Wins Golden Ball

  • Each FIFA World Cup ends with a number of awards being handed to players who stand out during the FIFA World Cup tournament. The Golden Ball is presented to the player who has performed the best overall, while the Golden Gloves and Golden Boot are among the most prestigious of these honours. The Golden Boot is given to the player who scored the most goals during the competition.
  • Lionel Messi of Argentina won the Golden Ball 2022 FIFA World Cup for his outstanding performance. FIFA World 2022 was the last World Cup match of Messi.

Argentina Wins FIFA World Cup 2022 Final

  • Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties to win the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 at the Lusail Stadiu, with captain Lionel Messi scoring twice in his last World Cup match.
  • Mbappé and Messi took their teams' first penalties and scored. Kingsley Coman had an attempt saved by Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez and Aurelien Tchouameni then missed for France, giving Gonzalo Montiel the opportunity to end it. He converted the penalty to the left and sparked wild celebrations.
  • In Qatar, Argentina backed up its victory from last year's Copa America, its first major trophy since 1993. It's quite the climax to Messi's international career, which is not over just yet. He said after the match that he would continue to play with the national team.

India Beat Bangladesh to Win their 3rd T20 World Cup for Blind

  • India defeated Bangladesh in the final clash of the T20 World Cup for Blind. They registered their third title of the tournament. In the match, India beat their opponents by a huge margin of 120 runs.
  • Ramesh smashed 136 off 63 balls with the help of 24 boundaries and one six, while Reddy struck 100 off 50 balls (18X4).
  • The duo put on a 248-run unbeaten partnership for the third wicket to take them to a mammoth 277 for two in 20 overs after opting to bat.
  • Chasing the huge target, Bangladesh could only score 157 for 3 in 20 overs. Salman top-scored for Bangladesh with 77 not out.

Indian Women's Hockey Team Beat Spain 1-0 to Lift FIH Nations Cup in Valencia

  • In Hockey, the Indian Women's Hockey Team defeated Spain 1-0 in the final to win the FIH Women's Nations Cup 2022 in Valencia, Spain. Indian remained undefeated during the tournament and also got promoted to the 2023-24 FIH Hockey Women's Pro League. This was the inaugural season of the Women's FIH Nations Cup, with a promotion to next year's Women's Pro League hockey up for grabs for the winner. For India, Gurjit Kaur scored the winning goal of the match in the first quarter. Hockey India announced Rs. 2 Lakh for each player and Rs. 1 Lakh for each support staff of the Indian Women's Hockey Team that won the FIH Women's Nations Cup 2022.

Ruud Wins 2022 Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award

  • Casper Ruud was announced as the winner of the 2022 Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award. The winner of this particular award is selected by fellow players on the ATP Tour.
  • The Norwegian reached the summit clashes of French Open, US Open and ATP Finals this year. He also won titles in Buenos Aires, Geneva and Gstaad while finishing runner-up at Miami. Ruud, who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 2, finished the year as World No. 3.
  • It is the first time since 2004 that the award has not been won by either Roger Federer (13-time winner) or Rafael Nadal (five-time winner including last four years). Ruud is also the award's first Scandinavian winner since Sweden's Edberg who won it for a fifth time in 1995. The following year, the award was renamed to honour him.

Former All-rounder Manoj Prabhakar Quits as Nepal Men's Team Head Coach

  • Former India all-rounder Manoj Prabhakar stepped down as Nepal team head coach after a four-month stint.
  • Prabhakar, who took 96 wickets and scored 1600 runs from 39 Tests between 1984 and 1995, was appointed to the post in August 2022. He had also played in 130 ODIs, taking 157 wickets from them.
  • Prabhakar was at the helm of affairs for the Nepal men's team in only five T20Is and seven ODIs, including four matches in the World Cup Super League 2.
  • Under him, Nepal had a successful tour of Kenya, winning a five-match T20I series 3-2 and then sweeping the ODIs 3-0. Nepal also won a home ODI series against UAE 2-1.

Kane Williamson Steps Down as New Zealand Test Skipper

  • Kane Williamson, who led New Zealand to the World Test Championship triumph in its inaugural edition, stepped down as captain from the longest format.
  • Tim Southee was named the replacement in their WTC title defence. Williamson will continue to lead the side in the white-ball format with focus on the ODI World Cup in 2023 and T20 World Cup in 2024. Tom Latham was appointed their vice-captain.
  • Statistically, Williamson is the best Test captain in New Zealand's history, winning 22 of 40 matches at the helm, as well as eight draws and just 10 defeats.

Cindy Hook Appointed as CEO of 2032 Olympic Organising Committee

  • American Cindy Hook, the Chief Executive Officer for Deloitte Asia Pacific until June, was appointed as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of the organizing committee for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane.
  • The organizing committee announced the appointment engaging with 50 candidates over six months. Hook will start the new role in February.
  • The 2032 organizing committee held its first board meeting in April and on July 23 started the decade-long countdown. The International Olympic Committee awarded the 2032 Games to Brisbane in July 2021 under a revamped procedure for choosing host cities. Australia has twice previously hosted the Summer Olympics, at Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.

Polish Tennis Star Iga Swiatek Wins Maiden WTA Player of Year Award

  • Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek was chosen for the player of the year award by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for the first time after her incredible run in 2022 that also saw her get to the summit of women's singles ranking. Swiatek, who was named Newcomer of the Year in 2020, had an exceptional season in 2022, leading the way in terms of finals appearances, awards won and matches won. She was crowned winner at eight tournaments, including six in a row and a 37-match winning streak.
  • Among the eigh championships were two Grand Slams, at Roland Garros and the US Open, as well as WTA 1000 titles at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open (Doha), the BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells), the Miami Open presented by Ita, Internazionali BNL d'Italia (Rome), and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix (Stuttgart). Swiatek won 67 matches this season in total as per the WTA Tour website.

Tata Steel Signs MoU with Hockey India to Become Official partner of WC

  • Tata Steel Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hockey India to become an official partner of the FIH Hockey Men's World Cup 2023 in Bhubaneswar-Rourkela.
  • The 15th edition of the Hockey Men's World Cup will take place in Bhubaneswar-Rourkela from January 13 to January 29, 2023.
  • The FIH Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela will be the fourth time that India will be hosting the prestigious tournament after having played hosts in 1982 in Bombay, 2010 in New Delhi, and 2018 in Odisha.

Messi Announces Retirement after Qatar FIFA 2022

  • Argentina football team Captain Lionel Messi will retire after the FIFA World Cup 2022 final. This was confirmed by the footballer himself after his country reached final after beating Croatia.
  • It may be mentioned that Messia is playing his fifth World Cup, surpassing the four of Diego Maradona and Javier Mascherano. Along with this he also surpassed Gabriel Batistuta with his fifth goal in Qatar as the top Albiceleste scorer at World Cups.

Ferrari Appoint Frederic Vasseur as Formula One Team Boss

  • Ferrari appointed Frenchman Frederic Vasseur as Formula One team principal and General Manager, replacing Mattia Binotto whose resignation was announced last month.
  • Vasseur's departure from Swiss-based Sauber, which runs the Alfa Romeo team, had been announced earlier. Ferrari said he would join them on January 9.
  • Vasseur and his compatriot Nicolas Todt, son of Jean and manager of Ferrari's Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc, are close and founded the junior series ART racing team together.
