Manikanta Creates New 100m National Record at National Open Athletics Championships

  • H. H. Manikanta of Services created a new men's 100m national record on the opening day of National Open Athletics Championships.
  • Manikanta clocked 10.23 seconds to win heat number 3 and qualify for the final.
  • He erased the earlier national record of 10.26 seconds which was in the name of Amiya Kumar Mallick of Odisha set in 2016.

World, Olympic and Asian Games Champion Neeraj Chopra Appointed as Laureus Ambassador

  • Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic, World and Asian champion in men's javelin throw, was named a Laureus Ambassador, pledging his support to Laureus Sport for Good, the global foundation supporting over 300 programmes that use sport to eradicate inequality and discrimination for young people around the world.
  • His association with Laureus goes back to 2022, when he was nominated in the Breakthrough of the Year category at the Laureus World Sports Awards, following his gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics – the first won by an Indian track and field athlete.

The 11th Sultan of Johor Cup to Be Held in Johor, Malaysia

  • The 11th edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup in 2023 is scheduled to be held in Johor, Malaysia. Hockey India announced the 20-member Indian junior men's hockey team that will participate in the 11th Sultan of Johor Cup. This prestigious tournament is set to take place from October 27 to November 4. Notably, this year's edition will feature eight teams, expanding from the customary six.
  • In this year's Sultan of Johor Cup, India has been placed in Pool B. They will face tough competition from Malaysia, Pakistan, and New Zealand. Meanwhile, Pool A will consist of Germany, Australia, South Africa, and Great Britain. The tournament promises fierce competition, as these junior teams strive to prove their mettle on the international stage.

Rohit Sharma Hits Fastest World Cup Hundred by an Indian

  • Rohit Sharma recorded the fastest World Cup hundred by an Indian in 63 balls during the match against Afghanistan in Delhi.
  • He surpassed Virender Sehwag's 81-ball hundred against Bermuda in the 2007 World Cup. Rohit also broke the record for most hundreds in the World Cup with his seventh century across three editions, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's tally of six from as many seasons.

National Games 2023 to Be Held In Goa From Oct. 26 To Nov. 9

  • The National Games are India's homespun Olympic-style multi-sport event where athletes from the various states and Union Territories compete for medals.
  • The state's sports minister Govind Gaude confirmed that the 37th edition of the National Games 2023 will be held in Goa from October 26 to November 9.
  • This will be the first time Goa will host the National Games. Goa was awarded the hosting rights for the 36th edition, initially scheduled for 2016.

Ayodhya to host National Archery Championship in November 2023

  • The Senior National Archery Championship will be held in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh from 25 to 30 November 2023.
  • The championship will feature individual, team, and mixed team events under Indian, recurve, and compound rounds.
  • The competition will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on November 25.
  • Union sports minister Anurag Thakur will participate in the closing ceremony.

The UK and Ireland to Host Euro 2028, Italy and Turkey Get Euro 2032

  • The United Kingdom and Ireland will host the 2028 European Championship, while Italy and Turkey will stage the 2032 edition of the tournament, UEFA announced.
  • By accepting a joint Italy-Turkey bid for Euro 2032, and with Turkey withdrawing from the race for Euro 2028, the hosts for both tournaments were already all but assured.
  • Turkey's withdrawal from the 2028 race left England, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as the sole joint bidders for that tournament.

  • Second-ranked Iga Swiatek won the China Open final with a near-perfect 6-2, 6-2 victory over Liudmila Samsonova for her tour-leading fifth title of the season.
  • Swiatek's triumph, in her first visit to China, was her 16th career title and added to her impressive 2023 haul that includes titles at Roland Garros, Doha, Stuttgart and Warsaw.

Saudi Arabia Takes Formal Step to Host 2034 World Cup

  • Days after announcing its bid for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, Saudi Arabia took the official step by submitting a letter of intent to host the event to FIFA - the world soccer governing body.
  • According to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), ever since the kingdom showed its intention to bid for the tournament, over 70 FIFA member associations from across different continents had pledged their support.
  • FIFA announced (in October 2023) it had reached an agreement to host the 2030 World Cup across three continents viz, South America, Africa and Europe.

Kenyan Kiptum Smashes Men's Marathon World Record

  • Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum left the running world in awe as he shattered the men's marathon world record, clocking a time of just 2 hours and 35 seconds, to claim victory at the Chicago Marathon. He broke the previous record set by Eliud Kipchoge in the 2022 Berlin Marathon.
  • Kiptum's victory marked the third time a men's world record had been established on the streets of Chicago, but it was the first time since Morocco's Khalid Khannouchi achieved the feat in 1999.
  • While Kiptum's record-breaking run stole the headlines, Dutch sensation Sifan Hassan commanded attention in the women's category. The 30-year-old Ethiopian-born runner clinched the Chicago Marathon women's title in an unofficial time of two hours, 13 minutes, and 44 seconds. This remarkable performance not only secured her victory but also established a new course record.
