Indian Scientists Makes Cosmic Breakthrough, Discover a Rare triple-star System

  • A team of Indian astronomers made an exciting discovery that could change our understanding of how planets are formed. Led by Liton Majumdar from the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) in Odisha, the team studied a fascinating triple-star system known as GG Tau A, which is located 489 light-years away from Earth.
  • Unlike our Sun, which is a single star, GG Tau A has three stars that move around each other. This unusual arrangement is rare in the universe and studying it helps scientists learn more about how planets can form in complex star systems. GG Tau A is also quite young, only about 1 to 5 million years old, making it an excellent example for examining the early stages of planet formation. Surrounding the stars is a ring of gas and dust, which is where planets start to form.

Google's AI Model Outperforms Top Weather Forecast System

  • Google DeepMind has introduced a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) model called 'GenCast' that is capable of providing highly accurate weather forecasts, surpassing the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ENS, the leading operational weather forecast system. The AI model, which can predict not only day-to-day weather but also track extreme weather events like deadly storms, has been hailed as a significant step forward in weather forecasting.
  • GenCast has been shown to outperform ECMWF's ENS, which is regarded as the top operational weather forecast system, particularly in its ability to predict weather up to 15 days in advance.

Google to Launch Safety Engineering Centre in Hyderabad

  • Google and the Telangana government signed an agreement to establish the Google Safety Engineering Centre (GSEC) in Hyderabad. This specialised international cybersecurity hub will be Google's second such centre in the Asia Pacific, after Tokyo, and fifth globally, joining Dublin, Munich, and Malaga. The GSEC will focus on advancing cybersecurity capabilities, fostering skill development, and creating employment opportunities.

NASA Announces Further Delays in Artemis Moon Missions

  • NASA Administrator Bill Nelson announced new delays in the U.S. space agency's Artemis program to return astronauts to the moon for the first time since 1972, pushing back the next two planned missions amid potential policy changes under President-elect Donald Trump's administration.
  • According to Nelson, the next Artemis mission, sending astronauts around the moon and back, has slipped to April 2026, with the subsequent astronaut landing mission using SpaceX's Starship planned for the following year.
  • The newly announced delays came after NASA concluded an examination of the Orion crew capsule, made by Lockheed Martin (LMT.N), opens new tab, and its heat shield, which had cracked and partially eroded during re-entry into Earth's atmosphere on its debut 2022 uncrewed test mission, Artemis I.

ISRO's PSLV Successfully Places two European Satellites into Orbit

  • The European Space Agency (ESA) launched Proba-3, an advanced Sun-observing mission, aboard the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) flagship rocket, promoting global efforts to assess the economic and technological risks of space weather.
  • Project for Onboard Autonomy or the Proba-3 mission consists of a twin satellite in which two spacecraft (placed inside the satellites) would fly together as one, maintaining a precise formation down to a single millimeter to study the Sun's outer atmosphere.
