Pune Stadium to be Named after Neeraj Chopra

  • A stadium in the premises of Army Sports Institute in Pune is to be named after Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra.
  • The stadium will be named as 'Neeraj Chopra Army Sports Stadium' in Pune Cantt.
  • The official naming ceremony of the stadium is scheduled for August 23 and will be carried out by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Singh will be accompanied by the Army chief General M. M. Narvane and Lieutenant Governor J. S. Nain on this tour.

Amit Khatri Wins Silver in 10,000 m Race Walk

  • Amit Khatri won a silver in men's 10,000 m race walk event to clinch India's second medal at the World U-20 Athletics Championship.
  • Khatri the national record holder and world U-20 season leader, clocked 42 minute 17.94 seconds to finish second behind Kenya's Heristone Wanyoni (42:10.84).
  • Paul McGrath of Spain won the bronze with a timing of 42:26.11 minutes.

Mizoram Govt. Appoints Olympic-returned Lalremsiami as Hockey Chief Coach

  • Indian hockey player Lalremsiami, who was part of the women's team which finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, has been appointed as the chief coach, a Group-A post, under the Mizoram sports and youth services department.
  • The Mizoram government offered the Group-A post to Lalremsiami as an appreciation for her performance at the recently-concluded quadrennial event.
  • Lalremsiami, the first female Olympian from Mizoram, was made a chief coach in hockey discipline under the state sports and youth services department, a Group-A post similar to assistant director rank.

World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi

  • The 2021 edition of the World Athletics U20 Championships has been started in Nairobi, Kenya. The impact of Covid on teams travelling and logistics of moving vital equipment around the world have proven to be a challenge, the governing body said in a release. The event was originally scheduled for 2020. The World U20 Championships were held from 17 to 22 August, 2021.
  • Nairobi won the hosting rights in 2018 after conducting 'an outstanding final edition' of the IAAF World U18 Championships in 2017. According to reports, at least 60,000 watched the U18 championships at Nairobi's Moi International Sports Centre.

U-20 World Athletics Championships: Indian Mixed 4x400m Relay Team Wins Bronze

  • The Indian mixed 4x400m relay team won a bronze to clinch the country's fifth medal in the history of the U-20 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • The Indian quartet of Bharat S, Priya Mohan, Summy and Kapil clocked 3:20.60 seconds to finish third in the final.
  • Nigeria and Poland won the gold and silver medals with timings of 3:19.70 seconds and 3:19.80 seconds, respectively.

Odisha to Sponsor Indian Hockey Teams for 10 more Years

  • Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced that the Odisha government will sponsor the Indian Hockey teams for 10 more years.
  • Patnaik made the announcement at a felicitation programme for Indian men's and women's hockey teams in Bhubaneswar.
  • The state government started sponsoring the national hockey teams in 2018.

Raunak Sadhwani Wins 2021 Spilimbergo Open Chess Tournament

  • Indian Grandmaster Raunak Sadhwani has won the 19th Spilimbergo Open Chess Tournament in Italy. The fourth-seeded Sadhwani, who hails from Nagpur, remained undefeated in the tournament, with seven points from nine rounds, in which claimed five wins and four draws. In the ninth and final round, Sadhwani and Italian GM Pier Luigi Basso finished level on seven points, but the Indian was declared the winner on the basis of a better tie-break score.

Italian Club Roma Signs Tammy Abraham from Chelsea

  • Italian club Roma signed forward Tammy Abraham from Chelsea for 40 million euros (USD 47 million).
  • Abraham replaces Edin Deko, who moved to Serie A champion Inter Milan.
  • Abraham progressed through the ranks at Chelsea and scored 30 goals in 82 games. He also had loan spells at Bristol City, Swansea and Aston Villa.
  • The 23-year-old Abraham, who has played six times for England, helped Chelsea win the Champions League last season.
