Beijing Lights Olympic Flame

China lit its Olympic flame in Beijing after the ceremonial torch arrived from Athens, ahead of the Chinese capital's hosting of the 2022 Winter Games in February.
The Winter Games will be held from February 4 to February 20, when Beijing will become the first city to host both the summer and winter Olympics, amid a COVID-19 pandemic that means overseas spectators will be excluded.
At a welcome ceremony held near the National Stadium, shaped like a bird's nest and built for the 2008 Summer Games, Beijing Communist Party chief Cai Qi lit a cauldron to symbolise the arrival of the Olympic flame in China.

James Pattinson Retires from International Cricket

Australian fast bowler James Pattinson, once one of the most feared bowlers in the cricket world, has retired from international cricket.
The right-armer played 21 Test Matches, 15 One-Day Internationals and 4 T20 Internationals for Australia. He has played 76 first-class games for Victoria. He took 81 wickets at 26.33 in his Test career and has 302 wickets at 22.52 in first-class cricket.

Fencer Bhavani Devi wins French title

Fencer Bhavani Devi, who made history at the Tokyo Olympics by becoming the first Indian to compete in the sport at the Olympics, won the women's individual sabre title at the Charlellville National Competition in France.
"Won the Charlellville National Competition, France in the Women's Sabre individual," the 28-year-old posted on social media after winning the title, adding: "Many thanks to coach Christian Bauer, Arnaud Schneider, and all teammates. Congratulations to all for a great start of the season.

Sri Lanka's First Test captain Bandula Warnapura Dies at 68

Sri Lanka's first-ever Test cricket captain Bandula Warnapura died at the age of 68 at a city hospital.
Warnapura had his right leg amputated earlier this month after being diagnosed with high sugar levels, which hindered his blood circulation, according to local media reports.
An opening batsman with a solid technique, Warnapura was also a capable medium-pace bowler.
Not only did he lead the Sri Lankan side in its maiden Test match in February 1982 against England, he also faced the first ball and scored the first run for the island nation. He also achieved the rare record of opening the batting and opening the bowling (second innings) in the same game.

Shakib Al Hasan Becomes Highest Wicket-taker in T20 Internationals

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan became the highest wicket-taker in T20 International cricket when he pipped Lasith Malinga's tally of 107 wickets during their T20 World Cup game against Scotland.
Shakib, the greatest ever cricketer from his country, finished with figures of 2/17 in four overs and in the process surpassed the Sri Lankan great's tally of T20 International wickets.
Shakib now has 108 scalps from 89 T20 International games and is also the only cricketer to have a double of 100 wickets and 1000 plus runs in this format.

Indonesia Wins Thomas Cup after 19 Years

Indonesia blanked defending champions China 3-0 to win the Thomas Cup title for the first time since 2002.
It was Indonesia's 14th overall triumph in the tournament's history.
China, who fielded a relatively inexperienced outfit, was seeking their seventh title in nine editions.
The Thomas Cup, sometimes called the World Men's Team Championships, is an international badminton competition among teams representing member nations of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the sport's global governing body. The championships have been conducted every two years since the 1982 tournament, amended from being conducted every three years since the first tournament held in 1948–1949.

'Our Goal for All' Unveiled as Tagline for 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) unveiled 'Our Goal for All' as the official tagline of the 2022 Women's Asian Cup to be held in India from January 20 to February 6. The tagline was unveiled on occasion of the 100 days countdown for the tournament in which Continent's top 12 teams will contend for the prestigious title next year across Navi Mumbai, Mumbai and Pune. "India 2022 promises to be another spectacular celebration of the women's game throughout the Continent.
'Our Goal for All', demonstrates the unity and the collective effort of the Asian football family to create a brighter future for women's football by staging a world-class spectacle that will leave a legacy in the women's game for many years to come.

MS Dhoni Becomes First in World Cricket to Captain in 300 T20 Games

Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the first player in world cricket to captain a team in 300 T20 games across various competitions during his side's IPL summit clash against Kolkata Kight Riders.
The 40-year-old former India captain, playing his 10th IPL final (ninth for CSK as captain), has led the 'Yellow Brigade' in 214 games across 12 editions that they have taken part out of the 14 IPL seasons.
He has also led Rising Pune Supergiants during one IPL season apart from leading India in six T20 World Cups.

Rahul Dravid to be Team India's New Head Coach after T20 World Cup

In what comes as the biggest positive for Indian cricket in recent times, former India skipper Rahul Dravid has agreed to take over as the head coach of the national team. The development took place on the sidelines of the final of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League.
The other positions will now be looked into while Vikram stays as the batting coach. The Indian team is in a state of transition with youngsters coming in and they have all worked with Dravid and it will be easier for Indian cricket to continue on its path to become world beaters on the pitch.
Current coach Ravi Shastri's contract ends with the T20 World Cup that gets underway. The BCCI is hosting the tournament in Oman and UAE. India will open its T20 World Cup campaign against Pakistan on October 24 in Dubai. After the upcoming T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli will also be stepping down as the side's captain in the shortest format.
