Patnaik Inaugurates India's First Indoor Athletics Centre

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated India's first indoor athletics centre at Kalinga Stadium.
  • He also inaugurated an indoor aquatic centre, and laid the foundation of an indoor diving centre at the stadium.
  • The indoor athletics centre, which has a 10,000 square metre track, is capable of holding continental and regional championships.

ICC Makes Stop Clocks Permanent in ODIs, T20Is

  • Stop clocks used to regulate the time taken between overs will become a permanent fixture at limited-overs internationals from June following a successful trial, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said.
  • According to ICC, the feature, which has been on trial in limited-overs men's internationals since December, demonstrated that approximately 20 minutes had been saved per One-day international game.
  • It has been added as a mandatory playing condition in all full member ODI and T20 international matches starting with the men's T20 World Cup in the West Indies and United States.
  • Fielding sides will be expected to start a new over within a minute of completing the previous one, with an electronic clock displayed at grounds starting a countdown each time.
  • If a team is not ready to bowl the first ball of the next over within 60 seconds of the previous one being completed, it will receive two warnings with any further breaches leading to a five-run penalty per incident.

Max Verstappen Triumphs at Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

  • Red Bull's Max Verstappen clinched victory at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, starting from pole position. It marked Red Bull's second consecutive one-two finish in the 2024 Formula One season.
  • Verstappen celebrated his first-ever back-to-back victories at the start of a season. He extended his winning streak to nine consecutive races, including last year's success. Verstappen also achieved his 100th career podium.

Anurag Thakur Launches Khelo India Rising Talent Identification (KIRTI) Programme

  • The Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur, launched a unique talent hunt event called KIRTI (Khelo India Rising Talent Identification) in Chandigarh. This nationwide programme, under the Khelo India mission, aims to identify talented athletes between the ages of 9 and 18 years, currently enrolled in schools across the country.
  • KIRTI will conduct 20 lakh assessments across the country throughout the year to identify talent through notified Talent Assessment Centres.
  • This scouting and training programme is the first of its kind in India, aimed at reaching the next level in global sports.
  • KIRTI will use IT tools to identify talent from every corner of the country and provide a common platform to showcase their abilities.

  • Mumbai won a record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy title, beating Vidarbha by 169 runs on the final day of the 2024 season.
  • Chasing a daunting 538-run target Vidarbha put up a commendable fight with skipper Akshay Wadkar scoring a hundred but Mumbai spinners ensured Vidarbha were bowled out for 368.

  • Nishant Dev missed out on a Paris Olympics quota by a whisker, suffering a heartbreaking loss in the 71kg class quarter-finals as all Indian boxers returned empty-handed from the first World Olympic Boxing Qualifier.

Olympian Vishnu Saravanan Clinches Gold at Europa Cup 2024 Sailing Meet

  • India's Olympian sailor Vishnu Saravanan, who has already bagged a quota place for the Paris Olympic Games 2024, won the gold medal in the men's one-person dinghy (ILCA7) category at the Europa Cup 2024 sailing meet held in Mallorca, Spain.
  • Saravanan, who represented the country in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and finished 20th, topped the 91-boat race with 17 net points. The Netherlands' Willem Wiersema also accrued the same points but Saravanan won the category on technicality.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sutherland Named ICC Players of the Month for February 2024

  • Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young Indian opener, was named the ICC Men's Player of the Month for February 2024. Jaiswal beat out stiff competition from veterans like Kane Williamson of New Zealand and Pathum Nissanka of Sri Lanka to claim the coveted award.
  • Jaiswal made an incredible start to his international career, emerging as one of the best Test openers in the world. His performances in February 2024 were nothing short of extraordinary, as he slammed two scintillating double centuries in back-to-back Test matches against England.
  • In the women's category, Annabel Sutherland of Australia claimed the ICC Women's Player of the Month award for February 2024. Sutherland scored 229 runs and claimed seven wickets in four matches, outperforming the UAE duo of Esha Oza and Kavisha Egodage.
  • Sutherland's standout performance came in the one-off Test against South Africa, where she rewrote history books with a marathon double century. Her rapid 210 off just 248 balls set a new record for the fastest double century in Women's Test cricket, surpassing fellow Australian Karen Rolton's previous mark.
