India Contributes $500,000 to UN Counter-Terrorism Trust Fund

  • India reaffirmed its dedication to the global fight against terrorism by contributing $500,000 to the UN Counter-Terrorism Trust Fund (CTTF). Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered the contribution to Under Secretary General Vladimir Voronkov. This financial support adds to India's ongoing commitment, totalling $2.55 million, aimed at bolstering multilateral efforts against terrorism.
  • The UN Security Council, one of the primary organs of the United Nations, is responsible for maintaining international peace and security. Comprising 15 members, including five permanent and ten non-permanent members, the Council addresses global security issues and adopts resolutions to address emerging threats. It is headquartered in New York City, US.

Chad's Military Dictator Idriss Deby Wins Presidential Election

  • Mahamat Idris Deby Itno, Chad's military dictator and interim President, secured victory in the presidential election 2024. This provisional result, announced by the National Election Management Agency is poised to extend Deby's rule for another six years.
  • Idriss Deby, Mahamat's father, ruled Chad for 30 years with an iron fist until his death in 2021. Mahamat Idris Deby took over as interim president after his father's demise, subsequently consolidating power with the support of army generals.
  • Mahamat Idris Deby Itno clinched 61.03% of the votes, while his closest competitor, Prime Minister Succes Masra, garnered only 18.53%.

CJI D. Y. Chandrachud to Attend 'J20'- Summit of Heads of Apex Courts of G20 Members - In Brazil

  • Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud has been invited to attend 'J20' a summit of Heads of Supreme Courts and Constitutional Courts of all the G20 members. The J20 summit is being organised by the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court in light of Brazil's presidency of G20 2024.
  • The event is scheduled to take place from May 12-14 and includes key dignitaries and heads of various Supreme Courts of G20 members. As per the official list, these include participation from the African Union, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, European Union, France, Germany, India, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, UK, Portugal and Spain.
  • The conference which is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil focuses on deliberating upon 3 major themes - (1) The promotion of citizenship and social inclusion by the Judiciary; (2) Climate litigation and sustainable development and (3) Digital transformation and the use of technology to enhance judicial efficiency.

Vladimir Putin Reappoints Mikhail Mishustin as PM

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin reappointed Mikhail Mishustin, one of his loyalists, as the country's Prime Minister, a widely anticipated move to keep on a technocrat who has maintained a low political profile.
  • Mishustin and other technocrats in the Cabinet have been credited with maintaining a relatively stable economic performance despite bruising Western sanctions for Russia's role in Ukraine. Most other Cabinet members are expected to keep their jobs, though the fate of Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu is uncertain. Mishustin steered clear of political statements and avoided media interviews during his previous tenure.

UN General Assembly Votes to Back Palestinian bid for Membership

  • The UN general assembly voted overwhelmingly to back the Palestinian bid for full UN membership, in a move that signalled Israel's growing isolation on the world stage amid global alarm over the war in Gaza and the extent of the humanitarian crisis in the strip.
  • The assembly voted by 143 to nine, with 25 abstentions, for a resolution called on the UN security council to bestow full membership to the state of Palestine, while enhancing its current mission with a range of new rights and privileges, in addition to what it is allowed in its current observer status.
  • The highly charged gesture drew an immediate rebuke from Israel. Its envoy to the UN, Gilad Erdan, delivered a fiery denunciation of the resolution and its backers before the vote.

UK: Nadhim Zahawi Announces Decision to Stand Down at General Election

  • Nadhim Zahawi became the latest Conservative MP to announce that he will not run for the office again in the general elections.
  • Former chancellor under Boris Johnson, Zahawi said, "I have come to feel that the time is right for a new, energetic Conservative to fight for the honour of representing Stratford-on-Avon and assuming the mantle of MP for Shakespeare. I will, of course, serve my constituents with dedication and determination until then."

India May Get New Chinese Envoy after LS Election

  • China is likely to send one of its senior-most diplomats Xu Feihong as the envoy to India after the Lok Sabha elections are over.
  • Though there was a false alarm about his appointment as the envoy to Indian in January, Xu will fill the post that has been vacant for 19 months if he does take over in June.
  • In late January as well, the Beijing grapevine had suggested that the 60-year-old Xu, presently Assistant Minister for Financial and Administrative Affairs, will assume charge as the Ambassador to India.
  • The veteran diplomat has more experience serving in Europe and Latin America though he has had a three-year stint as the Ambassador in Kabul. This is in contrast to his predecessors Sun Weidong and Lui Zhaohui, who had served more in Asia.

26th ASEAN-India Senior Officials' Meeting in New Delhi

  • The 26th ASEAN-India Senior Officials' Meeting took place in New Delhi, co-chaired by Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar and Permanent Secretary Albert Chua of Singapore. Discussions encompassed the three pillars of engagement—political-security, economic, and socio-cultural—reviewing ASEAN-India relations as outlined in the ASEAN-India Plan of Action (2021-2025). Key topics included the implementation of the Prime Ministers' 12-Point Proposal and preparations for the upcoming ASEAN-India Summit in Vientiane.
  • Headquartered in Jakarta (Indonesia), the 10 ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states are – Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

José Raúl Mulino Wins Panama's Presidential Election

  • In a significant political development, José Raúl Mulino has emerged victorious in Panama's presidential election, securing nearly 35% of the counted votes with over 92% of the ballots tallied. The 64-year-old former security minister has gained an unassailable 9% lead over his nearest rival, prompting three of his closest opponents to concede defeat.
  • Mulino: From Vice-Presidential Candidate to President
  • Initially, Mulino was chosen as the Vice-Presidential candidate by former President Ricardo Martinelli, who was the initial Presidential candidate. However, after Martinelli's conviction for money laundering and subsequent 10-year prison sentence, he fled and sought political asylum in the Nicaraguan embassy in the capital. Mulino stepped in to replace Martinelli as the Presidential candidate, garnering support from the Achieving Goals and Alliance parties

  • Just a few months short of a quarter-century as Russia's leader, Vladimir Putin put his hand on a copy of the Constitution and began another six-year term as President wielding extraordinary power.
  • Since becoming acting President on the last day of 1999, Putin has shaped Russia into a monolith crushing political opposition, running independent-minded journalists out of the country and promoting an increasing devotion to prudish traditional values that pushes many in society into the margins.

India-Nigeria Local Currency Settlement System Agreement

  • India and Nigeria have agreed to finalize the Local Currency Settlement System Agreement to enhance bilateral trade. The agreement, to be settled in Indian rupees and Nigerian naira, was discussed during the 2nd session of the India-Nigeria Joint Trade Committee in Abuja.
