The World Congress of Gastroenterology 2026 (WCOG 2026) was held in New Delhi from 30 September to 3 October 2026, marking the first time India hosted the international gathering. India wins women's hockey gold at Asian Games 2026
India won a historic gold medal in women's hockey at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Aman Sehrawat wins Asian Games wrestling gold
Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat won the gold medal in the men’s freestyle 57 kilogram event at the 2026 Asian Games. In a dramatic final, Sehrawat defeated North Korea’s Han Chong Song 11–7 after overcoming a difficult position earlier in the match. The victory makes Sehrawat the first Indian wrestler to win Asian Games gold in the 57 kg freestyle category. His success was a highlight of India’s wrestling campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Games and adds to his growing international achievements. Sehrawat credited his coaches and training partners for the breakthrough.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann released a three-volume historical work titled Punjab Da Itihaas at Punjab Kala Bhawan. The work runs to about 1,980 pages and documents Punjab’s historical development, cultural and social heritage, sacrifices and contribution to India. Mann said Punjab has long been an important centre of art, literature and culture, and the publication preserves this legacy for future generations. The volumes cover different eras and emphasize Punjab’s role in national history. The event drew scholars and writers and highlighted a push to preserve regional history for a broader audience.

Five Centres of Excellence for Classical Languages approved
The Union Ministry of Education approved the establishment of five Centres of Excellence to promote research, preservation, digitisation and wider dissemination of India's classical-language heritage. The centres will focus on Classical Assamese, Classical Bengali, Classical Marathi, Classical Pali and Classical Prakrit. They will be established at Tezpur University, Visva-Bharati University, Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Central University of Odisha and Central University of Gujarat respectively. Tamil is recognised as a classical language but is not included in this particular group. Officials say the initiative will strengthen academic study, digitisation projects and international collaboration for India's linguistic legacy.

Kerala IT Parks Affiliation Scheme announced
The Kerala government announced the IT Parks Affiliation Scheme to bring IT and IT-enabled service companies operating outside the state's major government-owned technology parks into a unified ecosystem. World Teachers’ Day was observed on 5 October 2026 to recognise teachers’ contributions and highlight their rights, professional status and working conditions. The 2026 observance marks 60 years since the 1966 ILO-UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. The theme is Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures. UNESCO emphasises challenges such as recognition, workload, technology changes and institutional support, calling on governments to provide resources, training and safe working conditions. In India, education departments organized seminars, teacher exchanges and public campaigns to celebrate teachers nationwide. Odisha launches India’s first MICE Incentive Portal
Odisha has launched India's first MICE Incentive Portal, a digital platform to simplify support for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions. Deputy Chief Minister and Tourism Minister Pravati Parida unveiled the portal during the Odisha Travel Bazaar 2026. The MICE portal aims to promote Odisha as a destination for corporate conventions and other large events while streamlining applications for financial incentives by event organisers and tourism operators. The platform integrates with the state's tourism networks, offering faster approvals and greater transparency.
