PM Modi Likely To Skip ASEAN Summit in Malaysia

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to travel to Malaysia to participate in the meetings related to the ASEAN summit beginning October 26 due to scheduling issues.
  • It is learnt that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India at the meetings.
  • The ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit will be held in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 to 28.

Iran Joins UN Treaty against Terror Financing To Ease Sanctions Pressure

  • Iran ratified a law joining a United Nations convention against terror financing, in hopes it will lead to access to global banking, an easing of trade and relieving pressure on its sanctions-hit economy.
  • Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was elected last year (2024) on a promise to ease relations with the West and secure the lifting of sanctions that are hurting the economy.

SAIME Aquaculture Model from Sundarbans Earns FAO Global Recognition

  • In an endorsement of India's green innovation, the Sustainable Aquaculture in Mangrove Ecosystems (SAIME) model, developed by the Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS), received Global Technical Recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. This award places the Sundarbans region on the global map for pioneering a climate-adaptive, conservation-linked aquaculture model that balances ecological preservation with rural livelihoods, particularly through the cultivation of native black tiger shrimp.
  • The SAIME initiative is a multi-stakeholder partnership (MSP) that transforms shrimp aquaculture in mangrove-rich regions of South Asia. It aims to create an ecosystem-based standard that protects mangroves while enhancing farmer incomes through sustainable shrimp farming.

Centre Notifies Amended IT Rules to Enhance Transparency, Accountability in Content Removal by Intermediaries

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) notified amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, (IT Rules) to streamline the framework for removal of unlawful online content by intermediaries, and bring transparency.
  • These amendments strengthen the framework of due diligence obligations of intermediaries under the Information Technology Act, 2000 (IT Act).

Odisha Govt. Collaborates with Indian Rice Exporters Federation

  • The Odisha government confirmed its collaboration with the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025, dubbed the world's largest conference dedicated to the rice sector.
  • Scheduled for October 30 and 31 at iconic Bharat Mandapam in the national capital, BIRC 2025 is a landmark initiative aiming to elevate India's status in the global rice industry.
  • Odisha's involvement represents a significant step toward amplifying the state's contribution to both national food security and international rice trade.
  • As part of its engagement, the state will also contribute to the Coffee Table Book on Indian Rice and co-author the Vision and Roadmap for the Rice Sector's Contribution to Viksit Bharat @2047 -- a blueprint for inclusive and sustainable agricultural growth.

India Calls for Closer South-South Ties in Critical Minerals, Fertilizers

  • Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal called for greater South-South cooperation in critical minerals access, fertilisers and supply chain management. 
  • In his address at the 16th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, Goyal said: "We believe global South-South cooperation converted into concrete action can provide genuine and long lasting solutions in several areas of current concern like the critical minerals problem or the problems of adequate supply of fertilisers that many nations in the world are confronted with."

  • India has steadily advanced its indigenous semiconductor capabilities over the past decade, developing home-grown processor architectures, nurturing design talent, and strengthening research infrastructure.   • Building on this progress, India is now taking a major step forward with the development of a 7 nanometre processor, marking its entry into advanced node semiconductor design. The initiative signifies a defining moment in India's semiconductor journey and reaffirms the nation's commitment to self-reliant, next-generation technology innovation.
  • The 7 nm processor is being developed by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras), a key institution in India's processor design ecosystem through its SHAKTI initiative. Started in 2013, SHAKTI is based on open-source instruction set architecture, allowing anyone to adopt and use it freely without restrictions.

FIDE World Cup 2025

  • The 11th iteration of the official FIDE Chess World Cup is set to take place in India's coastal city of Goa from October 30 to November 7, 2025. A record number of 24 Indians will participate in the biennial event, which offers Candidates' spots.
  • The tournament top seed is Indian chess sensation and reigning World Champion, D. Gukesh.
  • The FIDE World Cup 2025 will feature 206 players competing in a head-to-head, two-game knockout format over eight rounds. Each round spans three days: two classical games (between two players) on the first two days, followed by tie-breaks on the third day, if necessary.

India, UK Launch Ramanujan Fellowship for Young Scientists

  • In an initiative to deepen scientific ties, India and the United Kingdom launched the Ramanujan Junior Researchers Programme, named after the legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The fellowship aims to foster young Indian talent in theoretical sciences, enabling them to collaborate with leading British researchers at the London Institute for Mathematical Sciences (LIMS). The initiative marks a symbolic revival of the 1913 collaboration between Ramanujan and G.H. Hardy, which transformed global mathematics.
  • The Ramanujan Junior Researchers Programme will roll out in two distinct phases,
  • Phase 1: Junior Visitors from JNCASR
  • Initially, PhD students from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) will be selected.
  • Designated as Ramanujan Junior Visitors, up to six students will spend several months at LIMS in London's Mayfair, collaborating with senior theorists.
  • They will attend lectures, develop research ideas, and work on high-level theoretical problems.
  • Phase 2: Ramanujan Junior Fellowships
  • The second phase will expand the scheme across India.
  • It will open three-year fellowships to early-career Indian researchers in theoretical physics and mathematics.
  • These Ramanujan Junior Fellows will be embedded full-time at LIMS, contributing to ongoing research and developing independent projects with British counterparts.

Rajnath Singh Releases Book on Civil-Military Fusion by Lt Gen Raj Shukla

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said that Operation Sindoor witnessed extraordinary jointness and integration among the three Services. He added that it also reaffirmed the Government's resolve to devise coordinated, adaptive and preemptive defence strategies to deal with the challenges arising out of the changing world order and evolving methods of warfare. Singh made these remarks while launching the book titled 'Civil-Military Fusion as a Metric of National Power and Comprehensive Security', written by Lt Gen Raj Shukla (Retd).
