Delhi and Bengaluru Lead in India's Crypto Investments as Bitcoin Crosses $100,000 in 2024

  • Delhi NCR continued to assert its dominance in India's cryptocurrency adoption landscape, maintaining its lead in terms of the value invested. This was followed by the IT hub Bengaluru and Mumbai.
  • According to the CoinSwitch report, more than 36% of India's total crypto investments are concentrated in the three major metropolitan areas: Delhi (20.1%), Bengaluru (9.6%) and Mumbai (6.5%).

  • Indonesian badminton coach Irwansyah, who has been the long-time singles coach for the badminton powerhouses, accepted an offer from India after his contract ran down with Persatuan Bulutangkis Seluruh Indonesia (PBSI, the country's badminton federation). Irwansyah is credited with the rise of men's singles stars Jonatan Christie and Anthony Ginting, who have both been as high as No 2 in the world.

  • With the series on the line, Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh put on a high-intent show in Navi Mumbai with blistering half-centuries. It was a record-breaking night for India in Navi Mumbai as India beat West Indies by 60 runs in the T20I series decider. First, Mandhana broke the record for the most 50-plus scores in women's T20Is. Once she was dismissed, Ghosh came in and smashed an 18-ball half-century, the joint-fastest ever in this format. And those two knocks powered India to 217/4, their highest-ever total in women's T20Is.

India, France Sign Pact for Grand Museum in North, South Blocks

  • India and France signed an agreement towards the adaptive reuse of the North and South Blocks for the ambitious new national museum project, dubbed to be the largest museum in the world. It is a part of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project and is set to span approximately 1.55 lakh square metre, overtaking The Louvre in Paris, presently the world's biggest.
  • It will be implemented in two phases, the first comprising the retrofitting of North Block into a museum space, with an estimated deadline of June 2026.
  • Under the Central Vista plan, the North Block, which currently houses the offices of Ministries of Finance and Home Affairs, and the South Block are set to be moved to the Common Central Secretariat (CCS) buildings on Janpath. The North Block is likely to be vacated by March 2025, while the South Block, which houses the Prime Minister's Office and Ministry of External Affairs office, will be vacated and readied in due course.

'One Nation, One Poll' Panel Gets More Members After Some Parties Object

  • The Joint Parliamentary Committee to review the One Nation One Election bill will have eight more members. Now it will have 27 members from Lok Sabha and 12 from Rajya Sabha, instead of 21 members from the Lower House and 10 from the Upper House, as was initially declared. The number was increased after former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena UBT leader Uddhav Thackeray and a few other parties pointed out that none of their members were included in the committee.

IIT Bombay and Tohoku University Collaborate on Research

  • IIT Bombay signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tohoku University, Japan, to launch the IIT Bombay-Tohoku University Joint Academic & Research Programme.   • Initially, the programme will focus on a dual degree initiative for research. Over time, it may develop into a joint institute, subject to approval from the senate and government bodies. The collaboration aims to address global challenges through academic and research excellence.
  • The signing ceremony witnessed participation from senior delegations of both universities. The MoU was exchanged by Dr Sharad Kumar Saraf, Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIT Bombay, and Professor Shireesh B Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, with Professor Teiji Tominaga, President of Tohoku University.
