Ministry of Mines Launches the First Ever Tranche of Auction of Mineral Blocks in the Offshore Areas

  • The first ever tranche of e-auction of mineral blocks in the offshore areas of India was launched by G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Coal and Mines. This landmark event is a major step forward in India's journey to explore and utilize its extensive offshore mineral resources within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
  • This first tranche of auction includes 13 mineral blocks spanning across the Arabian Sea and Andaman Sea, featuring a mix of minerals, such as construction sand, lime-mud and polymetallic nodules and crusts. These minerals are critical for infrastructure development, high-tech manufacturing and the green energy transition.

SAIL and John Cockerill India Sign MoU to Drive Innovation and Green Steel Technologies

  • Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna and India's largest public sector steel producer, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with John Cockerill India Limited (JCIL), the Indian arm of the global John Cockerill Group in Mumbai. This MoU aims to leverage the combined strengths of the two companies, including cutting-edge technologies, extensive industry expertise and a shared vision for innovation and sustainability. Anil Kumar Tulsiani, Director (Finance), SAIL and Michael Kotas, Managing Director-Metals Division, John Cockerill India Limited signed the MoU.
  • The focus areas of this collaboration will be Cold Rolling and Processing for Carbon Steel, Green Steel and Silicon Steel — specifically CRGO (Cold Rolled Grain Oriented) and CRNO (Cold Rolled Non-Oriented) steels. Additionally, the partnership seeks to integrate green technologies into iron and steel making processes and incorporate advanced steelmaking technologies to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

Eight Start-ups Selected Under National Quantum Mission

  • In a stride towards cementing India as a global quantum technology leader, Union Minister Jitendra Singh announced the selection of eight pioneering start-ups under the National Quantum Mission (NQM) and the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NMICPS). These start-ups, chosen after meticulous evaluation, are positioned to drive cutting-edge research and innovation, contributing to national security, healthcare, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

IIT Guwahati Hosts Nation's Largest Science Festival

  • The India International Science Festival (IISF) 2024, India's largest science celebration, will take place at IIT Guwahati, Assam, from November 30 to December 3, 2024. Organised under the aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), with the National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) as the coordinating body, IISF promotes science-society engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • For the first time, this mega event is being hosted in North-east India.

Las Vegas Grand Prix 2024: Max Verstappen Clinches Fourth Formula 1 Title

  • Dutch Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive Drivers' Championship title, despite finishing fifth in the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Verstappen's dominance in Formula 1 continues as he became the sixth driver in history to win four or more titles.
  • The 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, held in the United States, marked a thrilling race in the Formula 1 calendar. George Russell of Mercedes emerged victorious, with teammate Lewis Hamilton finishing second.

ACC Men's U-19 Asia Cup 2024

  • The 11th edition of the ACC Men's U-19 Asia Cup started on November 29 and will go on till December 8 with Bangladesh looking to defend their title in the 50-over event.
  • The United Arab Emirates is hosting this reputed tournament, with matches taking place in Dubai and Sharjah. Eight nations are competing in this limited-overs competition, which is administered by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and consists of 15 matches including the group stages and knockouts.
  • The five Asian full members of the ICC—India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh—as well as the three associate members—United Arab Emirates, Japan, and Nepal—who advanced through regional competitions are among the participants.

India, Japan Begin First Talks on Economic Security and Trade

  • The first round of the India-Japan Dialogue on Economic Security, Strategic Trade, and Technology took place in Tokyo. This important meeting focused on enhancing collaboration between the two nations in areas like economic security, supply chain resilience, and the application of emerging technologies. The dialogue was co-chaired by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri from India and Vice Minister Masataka Okano from Japan, and it marked a significant step in strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

Digital India State Consultation Workshop Held in Lucknow

  • A Digital India State Consultation Workshop was organised by the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in collaboration with the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Uttar Pradesh Development Systems Corporation Ltd. (UPDESCO) in Lucknow.
  • The workshop focused on various national initiatives launched by NeGD under the Government's flagship Digital India Programme such as DigiLocker, Entity Locker, API Setu, OpenForge, myScheme, UMANG, UX4G among others. Important verticals like Cyber Security and Capacity Building were also discussed. The State led discussions on CM Helpline (1076) & IGRS, UIDAI Ecosystem and Aadhaar Authentication Services.

Army Chief Presents President's Colours to Four Mechanised Infantry Battalions

  • Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi presented the prestigious President's Colours to four battalions of the Mechanised Infantry at a grand ceremony held at the Mechanised Infantry Centre and School (MICS) in Ahilyanagar, (formerly known as Ahmednagar) Maharashtra.
  • The 26th and 27th Battalions of the Mechanised Infantry Regiment and the 20th and 22nd Battalions of the Brigade of the Guards received the Colours. This marked a significant achievement for these units, representing the youngest battalions of the arm.
  • The award of President's Colours is a symbol of pride and honour, granted to units that have shown exceptional courage, discipline, and dedication. It reflects the battalions' commitment to upholding the highest standards of the Indian Army, connecting the past and present traditions of military excellence.

Army Launches 'Eklavya' Online Digital Platform for Officers' Training

  • Gen Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), launched an innovative online learning platform for the Indian Army, named 'Eklavya.' This initiative is part of the Indian Army's ambitious agenda as it moves into what the COAS branded the 'Decade of Transformation.' The platform also coincides with the Army's central theme for 2024, which is designated as the 'Year of Technology Absorption.'
  • The Eklavya platform has been meticulously developed under the auspices of the Headquarters Army Training Command, with backing from the Army War College. Notably, the software was created at zero cost in collaboration with the Bhaskaracharya National Institute of Space Applications and Geoinformatics (BISAG-N) located in Gandhinagar, with additional support from the Directorate General of Information Systems. This collaborative effort underscores the Army's commitment to leveraging technological advancements for enhanced training and development.
  • Eklavya has been seamlessly integrated into the Army Data Network and boasts a scalable architecture. This feature allows the Headquarters Army Training Command to integrate numerous training establishments, thereby accommodating a wide range of courses. In an encouraging development, student officers are now allowed to register for multiple courses simultaneously. Currently, the platform hosts a total of 96 courses across 17 Category 'A' Training Establishments within the Indian Army.

International Jaguar Day

  • International Jaguar Day, observed on November 29 every year globally, brings attention to the myriad conservation efforts led by governments, organisations and individuals.
  • In 2018, International Jaguar Day was conceived by Panthera, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The date, November 29, was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Liso, a jaguar rehabilitated by the Belize Zoo, in Central America, after falling victim to a trap. Liso became a symbol of hope and resilience, inspiring the creation of this international day.

International Day of Solidarity with Palestine People

  • The United Nations observes the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on or around November 29 each year (in 2024 on November 29).
  • On November 29, 1947, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II)). On December 2, 1977, it was recorded that the assembly called for the annual observance of November 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (A/RES/32/40 B).

Indian Chemical Council Honoured with 2024 OPCW-The Hague Award

  • The Indian Chemical Council (ICC) was awarded the prestigious 2024 OPCW-The Hague Award at the 29th Session of the Conference of the States Parties (CSP) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) held in The Hague. This is the first time that the award has been conferred upon a chemical industry body, marking a milestone in India's commitment to chemical safety and compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
  • The award was presented by Ambassador Fernando Arias (OPCW Director-General) and Mayor Jan van Zanen (Municipality of The Hague).
  • The OPCW-The Hague Award is presented to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the goals of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

Students May Shorten or Extend Degree Duration under New UGC Plan

  • Undergraduate students in India may soon have the option to shorten or extend their degree durations, thanks to a new initiative by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The Accelerated Degree Programme (ADP) and Extended Degree Programme (EDP) will let students tailor their timelines to their individual learning needs.
  • The UGC approved the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for these programmes and will release the draft norms for public feedback soon.
  • The ADP allows students to complete a three-year or four-year degree in less time by earning additional credits per semester.
  • Conversely, the EDP extends the timeline, enabling students to take fewer credits each semester. The total credits earned in both cases will remain the same as in a standard-duration degree.

IIT Kharagpur, TCS Launch Research Centre for Digital Health, Robotics, Intelligent Systems

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur partnered with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), an IT firm providing services, consulting, and business solutions, to set up an advanced research centre in areas of digital health, robotics and intelligent systems leveraging edge computing, embedded systems, and AI.
  • The advanced research centre will be located in the institute's research park in New Town, Kolkata. The centre will feature three laboratories where over 150 TCS scientists will explore cutting-edge technologies and push the boundaries of innovation.
  • The laboratories will be in the domains of — sensing and communications, edge computing and analytics, and robotics and visual computing.

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Delhi Chief Justice Manmohan's Elevation

  • The Supreme Court Collegium passed a resolution recommending the name of the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Justice Manmohan for elevation to the top court.
  • In his first collegium meeting, the Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna noted that Justice Manmohan ranks second amongst the all-India seniority list and is also the senior-most Judge of Delhi High Court.
  • The resolution also considered the fact that, at present, the Bench of the Supreme Court is represented by only one Judge from the High Court of Delhi.
  • Presently, the Supreme Court is working at the strength of 32 judges out of the total strength of 34 posts. There are two vacancies in the Supreme Court.
