Alphabet Gets CCI Nod to Invest in Flipkart

  • The Competition Commission granted approval to Alphabet's arm Shoreline International Holdings LLC to acquire a stake in Walmart Group firm Flipkart.
  • Shoreline International Holding is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Google's parent firm Alphabet Inc. It is a holding company and does not own or operate any Google products or services.
  • The deal includes subscribing to Flipkart shares and an arrangement between Shoreline's affiliate and Flipkart's subsidiary for specific services.
  • Flipkart operates primarily in wholesale trade and e-commerce, facilitating transactions between Indian sellers and customers. The investment aligns with Alphabet's broader push into the Indian digital economy.

Google Appoints Ex-Apple Executive Mitul Shah to Lead Pixel Business

  • Google roped in the former head of consumer sales at Apple India Mitul Shah to lead its Pixel smartphone devices and services business in the country.

Gujarat's Urvil Patel Hits Fastest T20 Ton by an Indian

  • India batter Urvil Patel, playing for his home state of Gujarat in the domestic T20 tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), scored the fastest ton in T20 cricket. Patel took just 28 balls to reach the 100 – second only to Estonia's Sahil Chauhan's 27-ball world record against Cyprus. Patel now also holds the record for the fastest T20 ton by an Indian – taking over Rishabh Pant's 32-ball record from 2018 in SMAT.

India's Divith Reddy Wins World Cadets Chess Championship

  • Eight-year-old Divith Reddy of Hyderabad, Telangana, won the Under-8 World Cadets Chess Championship in Montesilvano, Italy.
  • Divith secured 9 out of the possible 11 points in the Under-8 World Cadets Chess Championship and was tied with fellow Indian Sattwik Swain and the Chinese Ziming Guo. However, due to a better tie-break score, Divith Reddy was awarded the gold medal, Sattwik Swain the silver medal, and the Chinese Ziming Guo got the bronze medal.
  • Divith, with a FIDE rating of 1784, started the Championships brilliantly by winning the first four of his matches. However, he lost his next two matches but bounced back to win his last five matches and the title.

Hemant Soren's Fourth Stint as Jharkhand Chief Minister

  • Hemant Soren took oath as the 14th Chief Minister of Jharkhand after his Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led coalition won the 2024 state elections by securing 56 out of the total 81 Assembly seats. This is the 49-year-old's fourth stint as the Chief Minister of the state.
  • The oath of office was administered by Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, with several top leaders of the INDIA bloc and other dignitaries who attended the ceremony.

Government Accepts Opposition Demand for Extension to Waqf Panel

  • While parliamentary proceedings got washed out for the second consecutive day amid protests by Congress-led Opposition on Gautam Adani's bribery indictment and Sambhal violence in Uttar Pradesh, the Centre offered an olive branch by acceding to its demands for extending the deadline for presenting the report on Waqf Bill by a joint Parliamentary panel till the Budget session and holding a discussion on the Constitution in Rajya Sabha.

President Droupadi Murmu Unveils Sanskrit and Maithili Translations of the Indian Constitution

  • President Droupadi Murmu commemorated the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution by releasing a commemorative coin and stamp during the 'Samvidhan Diwas' celebrations at Samvidhan Sadan in Parliament.
  • Murmu also released three books on the Constitution to mark the occasion. The books, titled 'Making of the Constitution of India: A Glimpse', 'Making of the Constitution of India & its Glorious Journey'* and a booklet dedicated to the art of the Constitution, were released by dignitaries from both Houses of Parliament.
  • The President also unveiled translated versions of the Constitution in Sanskrit and Maithili.
