Trump Picks Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence

  • President-elect Donald Trump shortlisted Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democrat, as the director of National Intelligence. Gabbard represented Democrats in the Congress from Hawaii from 2013 to 2021.
  • Tulsi Gabbard, who unsuccessfully fought the Democrats presidential nomination in 2020, endorsed Republican Donald Trump in the 2024 elections. Although her selection by Trump's team requires a clearance from the Senate which was last week won by Republicans.

  • Dubai emerged as the highest-ranked city in West Asia and Africa in the '2024 Global City Index' by Brand Finance, maintaining its regional lead for the second consecutive year. The city also made impressive strides globally, rising to fifth place, surpassing major cities like Singapore, Los Angeles, Sydney, San Francisco, and Amsterdam.

Indian Oil Corporation Welcomes Arvindar Singh Sahney as New Chairman

  • Arvindar Singh Sahney was appointed as the new chairman of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the nation's largest oil firm, as per an order from the petroleum ministry.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Sahney's appointment as chairman for a five-year tenure, starting from the date he assumes office, until his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is earliest.
  • The chairman position became vacant when Shrikant Madhav Vaidya completed his extended tenure on August 31, 2024. Following his departure, Satish Kumar Vaduguri, IOC's Director of Marketing, took on additional responsibilities as acting chairman.
  • Sahney is the second individual, after B Ashok, to be appointed as chairman without prior board-level experience at IOC. B Ashok was previously appointed as IOC's chairman in 2014 while serving as Executive Director of Retail.

India International Trade Fair Begins

  • More than 3,500 exhibitors from India and overseas are expected to participate in the 14-day India International Trade Fair (IITF), which began at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
  • The 43rd IITF is likely to attract about one lakh visitors a day.
  • According to the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), under the commerce ministry, the fair is a key platform to showcase the strength of Indian industry and quality products.
  • The theme for the fair is 'Viksit Bharat @2047'.
  • Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are participating as Partner States whereas Jharkhand is participating as Focus State.
  • As many as 11 countries – China, Egypt, Iran, South Korea, Sweden, Thailand, Türkiye, Tunisia, Lebanon, Kyrgyzstan and the UAE – are also participating in the fair.
  • The business days of IITF 2024 are from November 14 to 18 and entry for General visitors from 19-27 November 19 to 27, 2024.

Amazon Launches Facility in Bengaluru to Train School Students in Tech

  • Amazon India launched a facility in Bengaluru that will provide "underserved" school students free, hands-on learning in robotics, computing, artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D printing.
  • Amazon Future Engineer Makerspace will empower more than 4,000 young innovators by 2025. The facility will work with The Innovation Story, a group comprising educators, to provide underserved students in Classes 5 to 12 with immersive, hands-on learning experiences, nurturing their curiosity and equipping them with innovative technological skills to become future change-makers.

IPL 2025: Gujarat Titans Appoint Parthiv Patel as New Batting Coach

  • Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Gujarat Titans (GT) appointed former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel as their new batting coach. Parthiv, represented India in ODI and Test cricket. He will work closely with former India speedster Ashish Nehra who is also the head coach of the 2022 IPL winners.
  • Patel played in 139 matches before calling time on his IPL career in 2019. He remains one of few players to have won the IPL title with both CSK and MI during his stints with the two most successful teams in the league.

Pankaj Advani Wins IBSF World Billiards Championship in Qatar

  • Pankaj Advani, the veteran Indian cueist, once again showcased his mastery in the sport by securing his 28th world title. At the IBSF World Billiards Championship in Doha, Qatar, he triumphed over England's Robert Hall 4-2, marking his seventh consecutive World Billiards Championship win.
  • Singapore's Peter Gilchrist and India's Sourav Kothari shared the joint bronze medal in the championship.

ICC Player of the Month for October 2024

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed the winners of the ICC Players of the Month for October 2024. This month (October), the honours went to New Zealand's all-rounder Amelia Kerr won the title in the women's category and Pakistan's spinner Noman Ali in the men's category. Both players were pivotal in their respective teams' successes last month, showcasing skill, resilience, and leadership on the international stage.
  • Amelia Kerr's phenomenal performances were instrumental in leading New Zealand to victory in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup held in the UAE. As a dynamic all-rounder, Kerr left a significant mark on the tournament and proved to be an unstoppable force throughout.

Power Ministers' Conference 2024: Advancing India's Energy Future

  • The Union Minister for Power, Manohar Lal Khattar, chaired the Conference of Power Ministers of States and Union Territories in New Delhi, aimed at addressing key issues in the power sector.   • The conference saw detailed discussions on improving the financial viability of DISCOMs, the implementation of Smart Metering, and the progress of flagship schemes such as PM-Surya Ghar Yojana. Key issues such as resource adequacy, energy storage, and the promotion of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure were also highlighted.
  • The launch of Powerthon Phase-II was a key highlight, focusing on integrating AI-driven solutions to address DISCOM challenges. The initiative will support up to Rs. 37 crore in financial assistance for developing 40 innovative technological solutions to improve operational efficiency.

Jyotiraditya Scindia Inaugurates SATRC 25

  • Union Minister for Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, inaugurated the 25th Meeting of the South Asian Telecommunication Regulators' Council (SATRC-25) in New Delhi. In his keynote address, Scindia highlighted India's role as the "Voice of the Global South" and emphasised that SATRC-25 would be a vital platform for knowledge-sharing and innovative discussions on new policy and regulatory challenges.

BDL Signs MoU with Russia's Rosoboronexport for Collaboration on Pantsir Air Defence Systems

  • Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia's Rosoboronexport (ROE) to collaborate on the Pantsir air defence missile-gun systems.
  • The agreement was signed by BDL's Chairman and Managing Director, A. Madhavarao (Retd), and Kovalenko German, Deputy Director General of the Naval Department at ROE, during the 5th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IRIGC) subgroup meeting in Goa. The Pantsir-S1 system is a mobile, short-range air defence system equipped with both missile and gun capabilities.

MHA Greenlights CISF's First All-Women Unit

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) approved the creation of the Central Industrial Security Force's (CISF) first-ever all-women battalion. This historic move aims to promote gender equality and inspire more women to contribute to the CISF's mission of securing the nation's strategic assets.
  • This move encourages women to join the CISF's mission to protect India's strategic assets.
  • The battalion will undergo specialised training to perform various roles, including VIP security, airport security, and Delhi Metro duties.
  • CISF is a part of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and primarily provides security to government institutions and vital installations.
  • Over time, the force has diversified to handle VIP security, airport security, and other specialized duties.
  • CISF was set up on March 10, 1969, under an Act of the Parliament of India with an initial strength of 2,800 personnel.
  • It became an armed force of the Republic of India on June 15, 1983, following a separate Act of Parliament.

DRDO's Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile Passes Maiden Flight Test

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight test of its Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM), the Ministry of Defence announced.
  • The maiden flight took off from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.
  • During the test, all sub-systems performed as per expectation and met the primary mission objectives. The missile performance was monitored by several range sensors like Radar, Electro Optical Tracking System and telemetry deployed by ITR at different locations to ensure complete coverage of the flight path.

World Diabetes Day

  • Every year on November 14, the World Diabetes Day (WDD) is observed to increase the awareness of diabetes, a chronic condition that affects millions of people around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) organise the event, which focuses on diabetes prevention, health risks, and managing and living well with the disease.
  • The IDF and WHO established World Diabetes Day in 1991 in response to growing global concerns about diabetes as a major health concern. By adopting Resolution 61/225 in 2006, the UN formally recognised WDD and identified diabetes as a global health concern. The date, November 14, was selected because it is the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin with Charles Best in 1921. This finding transformed diabetes from a deadly illness to one that can now be controlled.
  • The theme for World Diabetes Day 2024 'Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps,' highlights the commitment to reducing the risk of diabetes and making sure that everyone with the disease has access to equitable, thorough, reasonably priced, and high-quality care.

Children's Day

  • In India, Children's Day is observed on November 14 to honour Nehru's commitment to children's well-being. The day serves as a reminder of the need to ensure a safe, healthy childhood, focusing on education, nutrition, and a protective environment. It emphasises the importance of nurturing children, who are the future leaders of the world.
  • The day also marks the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation's first Prime Minister, who was fondly called "Chacha Nehru" for his deep affection for children.

World Usability Day (2nd Thursday in November)

  • The World Usability Day, which is celebrated on the second Thursday of November every year, asserts the importance of Usability values in different sectors of human endeavour. Being observed on the 14th of November this year (2024), the World Usability Day 2024 promotes the values of Virtual Healthcare, Electronic health records, and other health-related Technologies this year.
  • In November 2005, the User Experience Professional Association created World Usability Day. When the Association was founded in 1991, it had 50 members at first. By promoting User Experience Concepts, holding international conferences, publishing a journal called "Journal of Usability Studies (JUS)," publishing User Experience Magazine, and having 59 local chapters in 30 countries, the Association expanded to serve a global community of over 2400 professionals.

  • British author Samantha Harvey won the prestigious Booker Prize for Fiction for her novel "Orbital," a thought-provoking and imaginative exploration set in the unique setting of the International Space Station (ISS). The novel, which Harvey refers to as a "space pastoral," delves into the fragility of Earth and the profound connection humans have with their planet, using the perspective of astronauts in orbit.

Justice Surya Kant New Chairman of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee

  • Justice Surya Kant, second senior most puisne judge of the Supreme Court, was appointed as Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC). This nomination was made by the Chief Justice of India.
  • Justice Surya Kant took over the role from Justice B.R. Gavai, who previously held the position before being appointed as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The Chief Justice of India serves as the patron-in-chief of the SCLSC.
  • The SCLSC was established to provide legal aid to marginalized and weaker sections of society, ensuring equal access to justice in line with Article 39-A of the Constitution. The Committee is part of a broader effort to make the Supreme Court accessible to citizens who may face financial or social barriers. Given the substantial costs associated with approaching the Supreme Court, the SCLSC aims to remove obstacles for those unable to afford legal expenses, providing assistance to eligible individuals as defined under Section 12 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
