Mumbai Surpasses Beijing as Asia's Billionaire Capital

  • Mumbai emerged as Asia's billionaire hub, surpassing Beijing for the first time, according to Hurun Research's 2024 Global Rich List.
  • The financial capital of India now boasts 92 billionaires, edging past Beijing's 91, despite China having a higher overall count of 814 billionaires compared to India's 271.
  • This places Mumbai third globally in terms of billionaires, with New York leading with 119 billionaires, followed by London with 97.
  • The Maharashtrian city's rise is attributed to the addition of 26 new billionaires over the past year, driving its total billionaire wealth to $445 billion, marking a 47 per cent increase from the previous year. In contrast, Beijing's total billionaire wealth amounts to $265 billion, experiencing a 28 per cent decrease.

Modi Government Allocates Rs. 6212.03 Crore for Strengthening Regional Rural Banks

  • The Modi government allocated Rs. 6212.03 crore to Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) as part of the recapitalisation scheme. RRBs, established in 1975 and owned by the Indian government, function at the regional level across various states. They were set up with the objective of offering fundamental banking and financial services to rural regions, specifically targeting small and marginal farmers, agricultural labourers, artisans, and small entrepreneurs.

Hurun Rich List: Meta's Mark Zuckerberg Biggest Wealth Gainer in 2024

  • The Hurun Research Institute released the 'Hurun Global Rich List 2024'. Among global billionaires, Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, re-emerged as the richest man, boasting a fortune of $231 billion. Two new entrants, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, with a fortune of $158 billion, and ex-Google CEO Larry Page, with $123 billion, joined the elite top 10, displacing Bertrand Puech of Hermes and Francoise Bettencourt Meyers of L'Oreal.
  • The top ten in the list are: Elon Musk ($231 billion), Jeff Bezos ($185 billion), Mark Zuckerberg ($158 billion), Larry Ellison ($144 billion), Warren Buffett ($144 billion), Steve Ballmer ($143 billion), Bill Gates ($138 billion), Larry Page ($123 billion) and Mukesh Ambani ($115 billion).

Astronomical Union Names Asteroid 'Jayantmurthy' after Indian Scientist

  • The International Astronomical Union (IAU) named an asteroid after India's Professor Jayant Murthy, a distinguished scientist known for his work on the interstellar medium, ultraviolet astronomy, and space missions.
  • The asteroid, previously catalogued as 2005 EX296, was officially designated as (215884) Jayantmurthy. This honour was announced by the IAU's Working Group on Small Bodies Nomenclature, the authority responsible for naming small objects in the Solar System.
  • Prof Murthy, who retired from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in 2021 and has since served as an Honorary Professor, was the acting Director of the institute from July 2018 to October 2019.
  • The asteroid (215884) Jayantmurthy was discovered by MW Buie at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, USA, in 2005.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia Extended to 5 Tests

  • The latest edition of the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy was extended by a match with India and Australia set to play five Tests later this year (2024) for the first time since the 1991-92 season, announced the Cricket Australia (CA).
  • In the past four series between the two teams, India have won on all four occasions, including back-to-back away Test series wins in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
  • Given the competitive nature of the India-Australia rivalry and the high standings of both teams, the Border-Gavaskar trophy is considered to be one of the most prestigious bilateral trophies in world cricket.

Women's Asia Cup 2024

  • Defending champions India have been clubbed with arch-rivals Pakistan, UAE and Nepal in group A of the women's Asia Cup T20 Championships which is scheduled to get underway in Dambulla, Sri Lanka on July 19. The nine-day affair, will feature eight teams -- one extra than the last edition. Unlike last time, the eight teams will be split into two groups with Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand and Malaysia placed in Group B.
  • The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals on July 26. The final is scheduled on July 28. India is the most successful team in the history of the tournament with seven titles so far.

Sreeja Akula Wins Women's Singles Title at WTT Feeder Beirut II 2024 Table Tennis Tournament

  • In Table Tennis, India's Sreeja Akula won the women's singles title at the WTT Feeder Beirut II 2024 table tennis tournament at the Al Kawthar Secondary School in Lebanon. Akula, the world No. 47, beat Luxembourg's Sarah De Nutte to win what was her second WTT singles career title. Akula's maiden crown came at the Feeder Corpus Christi 2024 in Texas back in January.
  • Akula, however, failed to clinch a second table tennis title from the Lebanon meet after she and her partner Diya Chitale, went down to Hong Kong China's Doo Hoi Kem and Zhu Chengzhu in the women's doubles final.

Election Commission's Saksham App Revolutionises Voting Accessibility

  • In a determined effort to ensure accessibility and inclusivity in the electoral process, the Election Commission introduced the Saksham App. This initiative aims to address the needs of voters above 85 years of age and Persons-with-Disabilities (PWDs) with a 40 per cent benchmark disability, allowing them to cast their votes from the comfort of their homes.

Abhay Thakur India's New Ambassador to Myanmar

  • Senior diplomat Abhay Thakur, who is at present an Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of External Affairs, was appointed as the country's next ambassador to Myanmar.
  • The 1992-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) had served as sous-sherpa of the G20 process during India's presidency of the influential bloc.
  • Thakur's appointment as India's ambassador to the conflict-torn nation comes at a crucial juncture.
  • Myanmar has been witnessing widespread violent protests demanding restoration of democracy since the military seized power in a coup on February 1, 2021.

Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk Ends His Fast in Leh

  • Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk ended the 21 days hunger strike he was leading for the statehood of Ladakh and the protection of the fragile Himalayan ecology. Wangchuk, however, stressed that it was the end of his hunger strike and not the movement as women protesters would go on the 'climate fast' from tomorrow.
  • Wangchuk ended his hunger strike hours after he made a fresh appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfil promises made to the people.

Army Deploys Advanced Anti-drone Defense Systems along China Border

  • In response to escalating tensions along the northern borders with China, the Indian Army initiated significant enhancements to its air defence capabilities. Central to this strategic manoeuvre is the deployment of cutting-edge Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction Systems (IDD&IS), developed domestically in collaboration between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Bharat Electronics.
  • Jointly developed by DRDO and Bharat Electronics, the Mark-1 variant IDD&IS represents a milestone in India's indigenous defence technology.
  • Multi-layered Approach: These systems offer a multi-layered defence mechanism against hostile drones, combining jamming technology with "hard kill" measures using lasers, thus ensuring comprehensive protection.

NIA Gets New Director General

  • The Centre appointed Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Sadanand Date as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) also appointed two new DGs of the Bureau of Police Research and Development and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
  • Date was among the first few officers who reached one of the places on the night of November 26, 2008, when Mumbai was under attack by 10 terrorists, and engaged in a counter-operation and got injured during the exchange of fire.
  • Date also worked as a DIG in the Central Bureau of Investigation and IG (ops) in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
  • The agency came into existence with the enactment of the National Investigation Agency Act 2008 by the Parliament of India on 31 December 2008, which was passed after the deadly 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai.
  • Headquartered in New Delhi, the NIA has branches in Hyderabad, Guwahati, Kochi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Kolkata, Raipur, Jammu, Chandigarh, Ranchi, Chennai and Imphal.
  • The founding Director-General of NIA was Radha Vinod Raju, and he served until 31 January 2010.

  • Famous food blogger Natasha Diddee, popularly known as The Gutless Foodie, died in Pune. Ms. Diddee was a chef by profession and was living life without a stomach.
  • The Pune-based food blogger reportedly lost her stomach to a tumour in 2018. Diddee faced multiple dietary restrictions surviving without a stomach. Her diet included several small meals throughout the day. However, she turned her prolonged illness into an opportunity and made a name for herself by exploring her passion for home-cooked food.

University of Houston Renews MoU with ICCR to Set up New Chair on Tamil Language, Literature

  • The University of Houston and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) renewed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up the ICCR Chair of Indian Studies to conduct research on Tamil language, literature and culture at the university.
  • The MoU was signed last year (2023) but was renewed for another year at a ceremony held in March 2024 at the University of Houston, between its Chancellor and the President Dr. Renu Khator, and Consul General of India in Houston, D. C. Manjunath.
  • The Chair aims to teach and conduct research on Tamil language, literature and culture at the University of Houston. The establishment of the Chair was welcomed by the leaders in the Joint Declaration issued after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the US in June 2023. Under the MoU, Dr. T. Vijayalakshmi, the visiting chair professor from India, has been teaching a curated Tamil Language and Culture Course at the University for the last two semesters.

IIM Calcutta, Emeritus Jointly Launch Advanced Programme in Strategic Project Management

  • The Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIMC) partnered up with Emeritus, an online learning platform, and launched Advanced Programme in Strategic Project Management to address modern project complexities. This nine-month high-impact programme by IIM Calcutta is designed for mid and senior-level executives aiming to spearhead strategic initiatives with a project-oriented approach.
  • This new course is also beneficial for individuals with direct or indirect experience of working on projects, aiming to transition between project management domains or prepare for more challenging roles in Strategic Project Management.

IIT Madras Signs MoU with Starburst Accelerator to Set up €100 Million Start-up Hub

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras) partnered up with French aerospace and defence firm Starburst Accelerator SARL to set up an innovative hub for start-ups with a funding support of €100 million.
  • Under this partnership, IIT Madras will enable Starburst to set up accelerator programs to boost Aviation, Space, and Defence (ASD) ecosystem in India.
  • This partnership will enable export promotion and provide support for Indian ASD start-ups to explore international markets through the extensive network of Starburst.
  • Under this partnership, Starburst will create a consulting team that can be composed of IIT Madras alumni and experienced military officers besides ASD managers and senior consultants from Starburst offices to help start-ups scale up in their growth journey. Through this, the two institutes plan to provide access to entrepreneurs and innovators, drive new technologies, business ideas, and models, and boost the Indian aerospace and defence innovation ecosystem.

ASI Begins Excavation in MP to Find India's Oldest Temple

  • The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is conducting excavations at two mounds in Nachne village, located in the Panna district of Madhya Pradesh. The goal of these excavations is to uncover what could potentially be the oldest temple in India.
  • The excavation sites are situated just 30 meters away from two ancient temples – a Gupta-era Parvati temple and the Chaumukh Nath temple built by the Kalachuri dynasty. These temples, known as the Nachna Hindu temples, are among the earliest surviving stone temples in central India, alongside those found in Bhumara and Deogarh.
  • Archaeologists believe that there is a historic site buried beneath the ground in Nachne village, and they are digging to uncover it. Dr. Shivakant Bajpai, the ASI's Superintending Archaeologist, stated that Nachne village is an important archaeological location and houses a Parvati temple.
  • Madhya Pradesh is home to several ancient temples, including the 'Sanchi 17', a Gupta-period shrine considered to be the oldest complete surviving temple in India to date, dating back to the 5th century CE.

Senior Advocate M. C. Bhandare Releases Memoirs Titled 'The Arc of Memory'

  • Former Congress politician, Governor of Odisha and veteran lawyer Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare released his memoirs titled 'The Arc of Memory' in the presence of family, friends and members of the legal fraternity at the India International Centre in Delhi.
  • 'The Arc of Memory' is a labour of love that began as Bhandare's communication to his late wife and former Delhi High Court judge Justice Sunanda Bhandare.

Allahabad High Court Strikes Down Madrasa Education Act

  • The Allahabad High Court's Lucknow bench declared the UP Board of Madarsa Education Act of 2004 as unconstitutional. The court ruled that the act violated the principle of secularism, as well as several articles of the Constitution, including Articles 14, 21, and 21-A. Additionally, the court found that the act also contravened Section 22 of the University Grants Commission Act of 1956.
  • The court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to provide regular school education to students enrolled in madarsas (Islamic seminaries). The ruling stated that these students should be accommodated in primary, high school, and intermediate education boards of the state.
  • The judgment came in response to a plea filed by a lawyer who had challenged the constitutionality of the law passed by the state government. The law allowed madarsas to provide education in Arabic, Urdu, Persian, Islamic studies, and other branches without recognition by the state's education boards.
