Union Minister Hardeep S. Puri Launches Ethanol 100 Fuel Initiative

  • Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri in March 2024 launched Ethanol100, an alternate auto fuel in New Delhi. Mr. Puri said that the green fuels like ethanol100, which the Modi government has laid special focus on, will play a key role in sustaining the economic growth of the country. 
  • Ethanol100, a cleaner and greener alternative to gasoline, is a blend of 92 to 94 percent ethanol, 4 to 5 percent motor spirit to provide colour to flame and 1.5 percent Co-solvent higher saturated alcohol. The fuel produces lower emissions of greenhouse gases, a reduction by around 63% on well to wheel basis. Ethanol100 will help to mitigate the impacts of climate change and improve air quality. Prominent two-wheeler manufacturers are already undertaking trials for Ethanol100 compliant vehicles. 
  • As part of a pilot initiative, IndianOil is rolling out Ethanol100 at 183 retail outlets across ethanol-rich states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Delhi.  It plans to make Ethanol100 available at 400 retail outlets in these states in a phased manner.

Arya.ag Partners Shivalik Bank for Commodity Financing

  • Grain commerce platform Arya.ag collaborated with Shivalik Small Finance Bank to extend financial assistance to farmers, agro-processors, and micro-enterprises. This partnership aims to facilitate over Rs. 200 crore in warehouse receipt financing in the current fiscal year, enhancing financial inclusion in the agricultural ecosystem.
  • Initiative aids in expanding the bank's reach across India's agricultural landscape.
  • It democratises access to financial services, ensuring equitable pricing and consistent credit supply.

Paytm Gets a Lifeline with Third-party License

  • Paytm was granted a third-party application provider license by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), just a day before the deadline for Paytm Payments Bank to cease its operations. The license offers Paytm's customers a means to continue using its app for payments following the shutdown of Paytm Payments Bank on March 15.
  • Paytm now partnered with other banks (like Axis, HDFC, SBI, YES Bank) to process UPI transactions instead of their own bank.

Max Verstappen Triumphs at Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

  • Red Bull's Max Verstappen clinched victory at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, starting from pole position. It marked Red Bull's second consecutive one-two finish in the 2024 Formula One season.
  • Verstappen celebrated his first-ever back-to-back victories at the start of a season. He extended his winning streak to nine consecutive races, including last year's success. Verstappen also achieved his 100th career podium.

Manohar Lal Khattar, Nitin Gadkari, Piyush Goyal in BJP's Second List of 72 Candidates for Lok Sabha

  • Three former Chief Ministers, nine Union Ministers, two Rajya Sabha MPs and 15 women figured in the BJP's second list of candidates.
  • Manohar Lal Khattar, who resigned as Haryana Chief Minister and vacated his Karnal Assembly seat, will be contesting for Lok Sabha from the Karnal seat.
  • While Union Minister Nitin Gadkari was retained from Nagpur, Piyush Goyal, a senior minister and Rajya Sabha MP, will be contesting from Mumbai North.
  • Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur will again contest from his Hamirpur constituency in Himachal Pradesh.
  • BJP's media cell head Anil Baluni, who is currently a Rajya Sabha MP, has been fielded from Uttarakhand's Garhwal constituency.

Gyanesh Kumar, S. S. Sandhu Appointed as New Election Commissioners

  • Retired bureaucrats Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu were appointed as Election Commissioners by a high-powered panel chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • This is the first time that Election Commissioners were appointed in accordance with the new Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023 brought in by the government in December 2023.
  • According to the Act, a selection committee headed by the Prime Minister and comprising a Union Minister nominated by the Prime Minister and the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha selects members of the EC. In the current committee, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is the Cabinet Minister and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury represents the Opposition, being the Congress leader of the House in Lok Sabha.

Centre Forms Committee to Look into Ayushman Bharat Implementation

  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced the formation of an expert committee to review the implementation of Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
  • The 16-member committee, chaired by V. K. Paul, Member (Health) at NITI Aayog, will oversee the progress of AB-PMJAY in terms of beneficiary identification, hospitalisation, and modes of implementation.
  • A key task of the committee is to suggest measures to prevent fraud or misuse of the scheme. Additionally, the committee will discuss ways to provide linkages with Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs).
  • The committee also includes Health Secretary Apurva Chandra, Deepti Gaur Mukerjee, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Authority (NHA), former NHA CEO Indu Bhushan, and representatives from private entities such as Apollo Hospitals, Nathealth, and Yashoda Super Speciality Hospitals, among others.

India, Brazil Hold First '2+2' Defence and Foreign Ministerial Dialogue

  • India and Brazil explored ways to expand cooperation in areas of energy, critical minerals, technology and counter-terrorism at their first '2+2' defence and foreign ministerial dialogue.
  • Discussions spanned defence, space, energy, critical minerals, tech, counter-terrorism and regional, multilateral & other issues of mutual interest.
  • It was co-chaired by additional secretary in the external affairs ministry G. V. Srinivas and joint secretary in the defence ministry Vishwesh Negi.
  • The Brazilian delegation was led by Director at Brazilian foreign ministry Marcelo Camara and Rear Admiral Fernando de Luca Marques de Oliviera.

This New Laser Weapon can Destroy Drones, Missiles at the Cost of a Pizza

  • Britain has successfully test fired its DragonFire laser directed energy weapon (LDEW) that shoots down enemy aircraft and missiles at a per-shot cost of less than £10, or Rs. 1,056, United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence (UK MoD) revealed.
  • During a trial at the (UK) MoD's Hebrides Range, the DragonFire LDEW system achieved the UK's first high-power firing of a laser weapon against aerial targets. The range of DragonFire is classified, but it is a line-of-sight weapon and can engage with any visible target.

Admiral Laxminarayan Ramdas, Former Indian Navy Chief, Dies

  • Admiral Laxminarayan Ramdas, the former Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy (1990-1993), passed away at the age of 90. His demise marks the end of an era in the Indian armed forces, leaving behind a legacy of valour, integrity, and unwavering commitment to principles.
  • He joined the Armed Forces Academy in Dehradun in 1949 and was commissioned in the Indian Navy in September 1953 as a communications specialist.
  • A Legacy of Milestones and Leadership:
    • Established Naval Academy in Cochin
    • Commanded INS Beas during the 1971 India-Pakistan war
    • Served as Indian Naval Attache in Bonn, West Germany (1973-76)
    • Held positions of Fleet Commander of Eastern Naval Command and commander of Southern and Eastern Naval Commands
    • Admirable leadership earned him respect and accolades from peers and subordinates
    • Became the 13th Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) on November 30, 1990

Rohan Jaitley is Central Government Standing Counsel in Delhi High Court

  • The Central government appointed Advocate Rohan Jaitley as its Standing Counsel before the Delhi High Court. The engagements, effective immediately, were made for a tenure of three years. An order in this regard was issued by the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India.
  • Rohan Jaitley primarily practices before the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court. He is also the President of the Delhi and District Cricket Association. He has done his law from India and Master's in Law from Cornell University.
