India, EFTA Ink Free Trade Agreement

  • India signed a trade and economic partnership agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) - a grouping of Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland - that includes a binding $100-billion investment commitment in the next 15 years.
  • Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal described the signing as a 'watershed moment', as it is India's first modern trade pact with a bloc having developed countries.
  • The agreement has 14 chapters, including trade in goods, rules of origin, intellectual property rights (IPRs), trade in services, investment promotion and cooperation, government procurement, technical barriers to trade and trade facilitation.

IndusInd Bank Launches Indus PayWear, an All-in-one Tokenisable Wearable

  • IndusInd Bank introduced 'Indus PayWear,' which, in collaboration with Mastercard, boasts to be the country's first all-in-one tokenisable wearables for both debit and credit cards.
  • As per the company, this offering aims to enable users to tokenise their IndusInd Bank cards onto a chip-enabled wearable device.
  • Indus PayWear facilitates tap-and-pay transactions at any contactless Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminal globally, eliminating the need for physical cards or payment apps. Users can securely make purchases with ease.
  • The Indus PayWear range includes three options: a ring, watch clasp, and stickers, catering to diverse customer preferences. The wearables are priced affordably, ranging from Rs. 499 to Rs. 2,999.

Adani Green Operationalises 1,000 Mw of Solar Project at Khavda in Gujarat

  • Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) operationalised a total of 1,000 Mw of solar energy capacity at the world's largest renewable energy (RE) park at Khavda in Gujarat. With this, AGEL has achieved operational capacity of 9,478 Mw and continues its journey to the stated goal of 45,000 Mw by 2030.
  • The world's largest RE plant of 30 Gw spans a staggering 538 sq km of barren land, five times the size of Paris. The project is expected to be completed in the next five years and will create over 15,200 green jobs.
  • AGEL is set to replicate its success in building and operating India's first and the world's largest wind-solar hybrid cluster at Jaisalmer.

  • Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty clinched the French Open 2024 badminton men's doubles title with a win over Chinese Taipei's Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan in the final.
  • Playing at the Arena Porte de la Chapelle, the venue for badminton at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the top-ranked Indian badminton pair beat their world No. 16 opponents with a scoreline of 21-11, 21-17 in 36 minutes.
  • This was the first title of the 2024 badminton season for Chirag-Satwik and the duo's second French Open title. The Indian pair won the French Open in 2022 and was runners-up in 2019.

  • Olympian Gurjit Kaur was appointed as captain of the Punjab women's hockey team that participating in the 14th Hockey India Senior Women's National Hockey Championship being held from March 13 to 23, 2024 in Pune, Maharashtra.
  • The championship is organised by Hockey India in Pune, Maharashtra. The women's hockey team of Punjab was selected in the selection trials held at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar.

J&K Police Launches "Operation Kamdhenu" to Combat Cattle Smuggling

  • In Jammu and Kashmir, the police initiated 'Operation Kamdhenu' to curb the rampant issue of cattle smuggling in the Jammu, Samba, and Kathua (JSK) police ranges. This crackdown aims to tackle not only the immediate smuggling activities but also to target the masterminds behind these illicit operations.
  • Under Operation Kamdhenu, a comprehensive strategy has been devised to scrutinize the activities of cattle smugglers. The focus is not just on apprehending the immediate perpetrators but also on identifying and registering the names of the main conspirators in the FIR (First Information Report).

GOI Announces Implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)

  • The Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government announced the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), bringing the law back into the spotlight. The CAA aims to provide a pathway to Indian citizenship for persecuted minority communities from neighbouring countries, but it has faced criticism and protests over the exclusion of Muslims.
  • The Citizenship (Amendment) Act was passed by the Central Government in Parliament in 2019. Its purpose is to grant Indian citizenship to refugees belonging to six non-Muslim communities (Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Parsis) who have fled religious persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan and entered India on or before December 31, 2014.
  • According to the government's clarification, the CAA does not automatically grant citizenship to anyone. Instead, it modifies the category of people who can apply for citizenship by exempting the applicants from the definition of "illegal migrant" under specific conditions:
  • The applicant must belong to the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, or Christian community and hail from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan.
  • They must have entered India on or before December 31, 2014, due to fear of religious persecution in their home country.
  • They will need to prove that they have lived in India for five years or more.
  • They must demonstrate that they have fled their countries due to religious persecution.
  • They must speak languages from the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and fulfill the requirements of the Third Schedule of the Civil Code 1955.

India - U.S. Maritime Security Exercise 'Sea Defenders-2024' Culminates at Port Blair

  • The comprehensive maritime security exercise 'Sea Defenders-2024' between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) & United States Coast Guard (USCG) culminated at Port Blair. The exercise was aimed at enhancing maritime cooperation and interoperability between the two forces.
  • The Exercise included a variety of scenarios including a Pollution Response Demonstration, in which Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft showcased their expertise in responding to oil spills and other environmental hazards at sea. It also simulated Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) Operations for inspecting vessels suspected of illegal activity.
  • During the exercise, the Indian Coast Guard helicopter and Dornier aircraft conducted Search & Rescue and Pollution Response demonstrations, showcasing ICG's ability to undertake aerial surveillance and rescue missions. The exercise also included practice to neutralize asymmetric threats, akin to drone attacks on commercial merchant traffic. The exercise also provided a platform for both USCG and ICG personnel to hone their fire fighting and damage control skills through a simulated scenario, where DCFF teams showcased capabilities to combat shipboard emergencies.

India Remains World's Largest Arms Importer, Russia its Top Supplier

  • India remains the world's top arms importer and its imports increased by 4.7 per cent between 2014-2018 and 2019-2023, according to Swedish think tank SIPRI in a new report. Russia continued as India's main arms supplier, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said, adding around 55 per cent of arms imports by European states in 2019-23 were supplied by the US, up from 35 per cent in 2014-18.
  • Although Russia remained India's main arms supplier (accounting for 36 per cent of its arms imports), this was the first five-year period since 1960-64 when deliveries from Russia (or the Soviet Union before 1991) made up less than half of India's arms imports.

National Working Moms Day

  • Every year, National Working Moms Day is celebrated on March 12.
  • In December 2017, Working Moms of Milwaukee – a local community – was founded by a mother belonging to that area. She recognised the need to make connections with other mothers in the same area and share the problems that mothers go through. It was the start of a community that came to each other's aid and helped bring each other up. In 2020, Working Moms of Milwaukee started celebrating M arch 12 to appreciate their efforts. In 2022, they realised that they need to expand their celebrations throughout the world. They received massive support, and since then, National Working Moms Day is celebrated every year.

Mauritius Day

  • Mauritius Day is celebrated every year on March 12. This national holiday is a time to commemorate the country's independence from Britain in 1968 and its transition to a republic in 1992.
  • Mauritius Day is celebrated with a colourful parade, including a military parade with the national anthem. The flag-hoisting ceremony is also part of the celebrations.
  • The history of Mauritius Day dates back to 1959, when British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan gave his famous 'Winds of Change' speech, outlining the British government's intention to grant independence to many of its overseas colonies, including Mauritius. This led to an increasing call for self-rule in Mauritius, and the 1966 elections resulted in a victory for an alliance of the Mauritius Labour Party and other self-rule parties.
  • On March 12, 1968, Mauritius was proclaimed a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II remaining head of state. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam also became the country's first Prime Minister. Twenty-four years later, on March 12, 1992, Mauritius was proclaimed as a republic within the British Commonwealth.

Gujarat Launches Two Schemes for Students in Classes 9 to 12

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched two schemes to provide financial assistance to students from Classes 9 to 12. The government has allocated Rs. 1,650 crore for these schemes in the state budget.

  • The book, spanning over 2,600 pages across two volumes, serves as a commentary on Patent Law and draws from approximately 500 legal decisions.
  • Justice Prathiba M Singh began writing the book in 2013 when she was designated as a Senior Advocate. Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Senior Advocate Harish Salve played key roles in encouraging Justice Singh to undertake this monumental task.
