Sweden becomes the 32nd member of the NATO

  • The NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance of 32 member states – 30 European and two North American.
  •  Sweden became the 32nd member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) 2024 after completing its accession process in Washington. Sweden's application to join NATO came two years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine raised security concerns. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that Sweden's accession makes NATO stronger, Sweden safer, and the whole Alliance more secure.

Bangladesh PM pitches for common currency for Muslim countries

  • The proposal was made during a meeting with a delegation from D-8, consisting of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.
  •  Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina proposed the idea of introducing a common currency among Muslim countries.

RBI, Bank Indonesia Sign Mou To Promote Use Of Local Currencies For Cross-Border Transactions

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Bank Indonesia (BI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Mumbai on Thursday for establishing a framework to promote the use of local currencies viz. the Indian Rupee (INR) and the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) for cross-border transactions.
  • The MoU was signed by the Governor of Reserve Bank of India Mr. Shaktikanta Das and the Governor of Bank Indonesia Mr. Perry Warjiyo. This collaboration marks a key milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation between RBI and BI.
  • In a press release issued on Thursday, the RBI said the MoU on establishing a framework for cooperation in the area of cross-border transactions in local currencies between India and Indonesia, aims to promote the use of INR and IDR bilaterally. It said this will eventually contribute to promoting trade between India and Indonesia as well as deepen financial integration and strengthen the long historical, cultural and economic relations Between India and Indonesia.

  • India captain Rohit Sharma was at his majestic best during the fifth and final Test against England in Dharamsala. Rohit not only notched up his 12th Test century against the Three Lions but also thwarted the England bowling attack, helping India extend their p e dominance in the five-matc ries where they already held a unassailable 3-1 lea . 
  • Rohit guided Tom Hartley towards deep mid wicket for a single to reach the three-digit mark. This also saw the 36-year-old match the remarkable feat of Rahul Dravid, who also has 48 international centuries to his name. 
  • Rohit's 12th Test century marked his 48th ton across all international formats (12 in Tests, 31 in ODIs, and 5 in T20Is), placing him on par with Dravid, who has 36 Test centuries and 12 in ODIs (total: 48) in his illustrious career.

Ujjwala Scheme: Govt extends Rs 300 LPG subsidy for beneficiaries for FY25

  • Union Minister Piyush Goyal stated that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has decided to extend this subsidy until 2024-25. It is expected to benefit nearly 10 crore families and will cost the government Rs 12,000 crore.
  •  The government has announced the extension of the Rs 300 per LPG cylinder subsidy to poor women under the Ujjwala Yojana for the next fiscal starting April 1. The subsidy was increased from Rs 200 per cylinder last year.
  • The announcement comes ahead of the general elections scheduled for April-May. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was launched in May 2016 to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women of poor households.

  • Mr. Munda said, the Tribal Affairs Ministry has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru to provide skill training to Scheduled Tribe students in the field of Semiconductor. 
  •  Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda has said that 740 Eklavya Model Residential Schools will be made functional across the country by 2025-26. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Mr Munda said, out of these, 401 Eklavya Model Residential schools have been started. He said that ten thousand teachers have been recruited for these schools and soon ten thousand more teachers will be recruited.

WCD Ministry organises Poshan Pakhwada 2024 from 9th March to 23rd March

  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development is organising Poshan Pakhwada 2024 from today to the 23rd of March. During the Pakhwada, mass sensitisation and community activities will be held around the themes including Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi, dietary practices focused on sensitisation around nutrition and health of pregnant women.
  • The Ministry in a statement said that in addition to these themes, States and partner Ministries and Departments can also organise additional sensitisation activities around other important areas. They include improving nutrition through Mission LiFE and adopting Sustainable
  • Food Systems by promoting Millet and Poshan Vatikas at Anganwadi Centres. Besides,  Diarrhea management; Tests, Treat, Talk Anemia; and Swasth Balak Spardha can also be organised to promote regular growth measurement of enrolled children at Anganwadi Centres.

Karnataka govt approves projects worth Rs 17,835 crore

  • The new projects include Wistron Infocomm Manufacturing India' . Karnataka government on Friday approved six new projects and eight additional investment proposals worth Rs 17,835.9 crore, with a potential to generate 27,000 jobs across the state, officials said.
  • The State High-Level Clearance Committee (SHLCC), headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, at its meeting here, gave the nod to new projects worth Rs 8,220.05 crore, and additional investment ones worth Rs 9,615.85 crore, they said.
  • proposal to invest Rs 2,095 crore and provide employment to 21,723 in the state, officials said.
  • According to an official statement, other major proposals that received the government's green signal are Air India Limited (Rs 1,750 crore investments), ICT Service Management Solutions (India) Private Limited (Rs 1,450 crore), STT Global Data Centres India Private Limited (Rs 1,352.3 crore) and Indian Cane Power Limited (Rs 1,078 crore).

J&K: Police initiate "Operation Kamdhenu" to curb cattle smuggling

  •  In Jammu and Kashmir, the police have initiated "Operation Kamdhenu" to curb the rampant issue of cattle smuggling in the Jammu, Samba, and Kathua (JSK) police ranges. Akashvani Jammu Correspondent reports that under Operation Kamdhenu, a comprehensive strategy has been devised to scrutinise the activities of cattle smugglers.
  • This crackdown aims not only to tackle the immediate smuggling activities but also to target the masterminds behind these illicit operations. The focus is not just on apprehending the immediate perpetrators but also on identifying and registering the names of the main conspirators in the FIR. Additionally, the assets of the accused will be assessed as part of the investigation process.
