  • The NDRC's primary objective is to aid researchers and students in understanding the behaviour and ecology of freshwater dolphins, particularly the endangered Gangetic dolphin. These fascinating creatures inhabit the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems of South Asia and were first documented in 1801.
  • The inauguration of the NDRC marks a significant step towards furthering our understanding and protecting the Gangetic dolphin.   • All unclaimed deposits/accounts that are part of the Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund of RBI can be searched in the UDGAM portal.

Government Raises Minimum Age for Postal Voting to 85 Years

  • The Indian government, following consultations with the Election Commission of India (ECI), revised the minimum age criterion for senior citizens to avail the postal ballot voting facility. The decision, which came into effect immediately, raises the eligibility age from 80 to 85 years, marking a pivotal change in the electoral process aimed at ensuring greater convenience for the nation's elderly population.
  • According to electoral data published in February, India boasts a staggering electorate of 96.88 crore, with 1.85 crore citizens above the age of 80. Under the amended Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, the definition of "senior citizens" eligible for postal ballot voting has been updated in Section 27(A) (e) to include only those above 85 years, replacing the previous threshold of 80 years.

Difteen Years after Fallout, BJP-BJD Set To Join Hands for Lok Sabha, Assembly Polls in Odisha

  • In a boost for the National Democratic Alliance, the BJP and Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) are all set to join hands 15 years after they had a fallout over the seat-sharing deal in 2009. This will be yet another setback for the Congress-led INDIA block as coming together of the BJP and the BJD would result in a stronger alliance in Odisha which has 147 assembly seats and 21 Lok Sabha seats. Uttarakhand Cabinet Clears Ordinance to Make Rioters Pay for Damage

  • The Uttarakhand government approved an ordinance mandating that losses incurred from damage to public and private property during riots be recovered from those deemed to be responsible for the disturbance.
  • After the Cabinet's approval, the Uttarakhand Public (Government) and Private Property Damage Recovery (Ordinance) Law 2024 was sent to the Governor. Apart from recovering losses, the ordinance also has provisions for fines of up to Rs. 8 lakh to be levied on the rioters.
  • According to a statement issued by the state government, if anyone gets injured during a riot, the entire cost of treatment will also be recovered from those responsible. Apart from this, all expenses incurred during the riot – on the police, administration, and other riot control agencies – will also be recovered.
  • The Cabinet also approved setting up a formal Claims Tribunal to deal with such cases and recover compensation. The members of the tribunal will include a retired judge, and an Additional District Magistrate-category officer will be given the responsibility of Claims Commissioner.

  • The partnership will also propel further innovation through the establishment of the 'NPCI-IISc Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Deep Tech Research and Development'.
  • The partnership will also focus on scalable blockchain platforms and multi-modal analytics over fintech data. Faculty members from five departments at IISc will work with NPCI researchers on practical challenges related to these areas.

Naveen Patnaik Introduces 'Nabin Magic Card' to Empower UG, PG Students

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the 'Nabin Magic Card' designed for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. To commemorate the 108th birth anniversary of the CM's father, Biju Patnaik, the initiative was launched.
  • Inaugurating the web portal, Patnaik referred to the youth as the nation's wealth and expressed his government's desire for them to recognise their potential.
  • He stated that the 'Nabin Odisha Magic Card' would aid in students' personal development, alleviate the financial strain on parents, and foster avenues for career advancement and employment opportunities.
  • With the smartcard, students will have access to WiFi services, mobile phone recharging, online tutoring, as well as discounts on book purchases and travel fare concessions for buses, trains, and planes.

Law Commission Recommends New Law to Protect Trade Secrets

  • The 22nd Law Commission headed by Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi recommended that new legislation be introduced to protect trade secrets with exceptions relating to whistleblower protection, compulsory licensing, government use, and public interest.
  • Trade secrets are intellectual property rights on confidential information that may be sold or licensed. They derive their value from being kept secret. However, unlike other forms of intellectual property, which are limited in duration, trade secrets can be protected indefinitely.
  • Currently, India lacks a specific law for the protection of trade secrets. Instead, they are safeguarded under the general laws governing contracts, common law, criminal law, and principles of breach of confidence and equity.
  • However, the 289th Law Commission Report published in March 2024 on 'Trade Secrets and Economic Espionage', states that the reference to the commission arose after deliberations in the government, where the need for legislation on the subject was felt.

  • The Supreme Court designated five lawyers as Senior Advocates.
  • Four of the designated lawyers are advocates-on-record (AoR) at the Supreme Court.
  • The following are the lawyers who were conferred the gown: Rajesh Mahale (AoR), P. V. Dinesh (AoR), Harinder Mohan Singh (AoR), Kaveeta Wadia (AoR) and S. Nandakumar (Advocate).
