Zoological Survey of India Names New Marine Species after President Droupadi Murmu
The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) identified and named a new species of marine head-shield sea slug discovered along the West Bengal and Odisha coasts. Named Melanochlamys droupadi, this distinctive species bears a ruby red spot and has unique characteristics that distinguish it from other sea slugs.
The species was discovered from the coastal areas of Digha in West Bengal and Udaipur in Odisha.
It is characterised by its short, blunt cylindrical body, smooth dorsal surface, and distinctive red spot.
Named after the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, Melanochlamys droupadi was confirmed through morphological, anatomical, and molecular examinations.
Cabinet Approval, Establishment of International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA)
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the establishment of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) with its headquarters based in India. This landmark decision came with a one-time budgetary support of Rs. 150 crore for a period of five years from 2023-24 to 2027-28.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recognising India's significant role in conserving big cats and endangered species, called for the formation of an Alliance of Global Leaders to combat poaching in Asia during his speech on Global Tiger Day in 2019. This call was reiterated on the occasion of commemorating 50 years of India's Project Tiger on April 9, 2023, where the launch of the International Big Cat Alliance was formally announced.
The International Big Cat Alliance focuses on conserving big cats, including Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar, and Cheetah. Five out of these seven big cats are found in India, emphasising the country's pivotal role in big cat conservation.

Bengali Translation Wins Prestigious Romain Rolland Book Prize 2024
Pankaj Kumar Chatterjee, the Bengali translator of Stalin's Couch, a French novel about the Soviet ruler's final years, has won the 7th edition of the Romain Rolland Book Prize.
Instituted in 2017 by the French Institute in India, it recognises translations of French books into Indian languages, including English.
This is the second time a Bengali translator has won the prize, with Trinanjan Chakraborty winning for Kamel Daoud's Meursault, contre-enquête in 2022.
The Romain Rolland Book Prize was created in 2017 with the aim of awarding the best translation of a French title (francophone area) into any Indian language, including English. The Indo-French jury takes into account the quality of the translation and of the publication itself. The prize aims at encouraging and rewarding the efforts made by Indian translators and Indian publishers to bring the best of Francophone literature and thought, in all its diversity, to the Indian readership.

Aiming at transporting coal seamlessly across the country, the Union Ministry of Coal has drafted a logistics plan and policy in consultation with all stakeholders in the supply chain.
The plan, called 'Coal Logistics Plan and Policy' and unveiled by Union Minister for Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi, will bring together all agencies involved in mining, transport, monitoring, and usage on a single digital smart platform.
The stakeholders that are part of the planning include the Ministry of Railways; Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; Coal India; NTPC; NITI Aayog; and private coal miners.

The 'Eat Right Station' certification process involves stringent audits of food vendors, comprehensive training programs for food handlers, and strict adherence to hygiene and sanitation protocols. According to the Health Ministry, stations that successfully meet these criteria are recognised for their efforts in promoting informed food choices and awarded the 'Eat Right Station' certification.
In addition to railway stations, six prominent metro stations across the country were also accredited as Eat Right Stations. Notable among them are stations at Noida Sector 51, Esplanade in Kolkata, IIT Kanpur, Botanical Garden in Noida, and Noida Electronic City Metro Station.
