Palestinian PM Resigns Citing 'New Reality' of Gaza War

  • Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh announced the resignation of his government, which rules parts of the occupied West Bank, citing the need for change after the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza ends.
  • Shtayyeh submitted the resignation to the leader of the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority, President Mahmud Abbas.
  • The United States and other powers called for a reformed Palestinian Authority to take charge of all Palestinian territories after the end of the war sparked by Hamas's October 7 attack.

WTO Adopts New Plurilateral Agreement on Domestic Services Regulation

  • The World Trade Organisation (WTO) adopted an agreement on domestic services regulation that aims to lower trade costs to the tune of about $150 billion per year.
  • The services domestic regulation agreement entered into force at the 13th Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi.
  • As many as 72 countries, including major economies such as the United States (US), Canada, Japan, China, United Kingdom, and Switzerland are part of the plurilateral agreement. These countries represent more than 90 per cent of global services trade.
  • India, however, is not a part of the agreement and has been opposing the plurilateral pact.
  • India, in principle, has been against plurilateral pacts on platforms such as the WTO as it believes that it may dilute its multilateral trade framework.
  • Till now, countries such as India, and South Africa have been questioning the legality of the plurilateral agreements at the WTO on services regulation, investment facilitation, and e-commerce.

Jana Small Finance Bank Gets RBI Nod to Re-appoint Ajay Kanwal as MD & CEO

  • Jana Small Finance Bank got approval from the Reserve Bank of India to re-appoint Ajay Kanwal as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for three years from March 21, 2024. His tenure will be till March 20, 2027.
  • Janalakshmi Financial Services became Jana Small Finance Bank in March 2018. Kanwal has more than 33 years of experience in financial services and has held various leadership positions in his banking career. He has launched several strategic growth initiatives while building and managing diverse teams across geographies.
  • He was a senior adviser to private equity firm TPG Capital and global payments company Mastercard.

Sunil Chemmankotil Quits as Teamlease Digital CEO; Neeti Sharma Appointed New Chief

  • Staffing firm Teamlease Digital's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sunil Chemmankotil resigned from his post. The staffing firm appointed Neeti Sharma as the new CEO of the company, with effect from March 26.
  • TeamLease Digital is a subsidiary of TeamLease Services Limited, which offers technology staffing services in information technology, telecom, engineering, ed-tech, health-tech and gaming industries.

PayU Payments Appoints former HDFC Chief Renu Sud Karnad as New Chairperson

  • Prosus-owned PayU Payments appointed five members to its board of directors. These include former Managing Director (MD) of Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd (HDFC) Renu Sud Karnad and former global Chief Executive Officer of PayU Group Laurent Le Moal.
  • Karnad, who was appointed as chairperson of the board, was joined by two independent directors - Gopika Pant, managing partner at Indian Law Partners, and Jairaj Purandare, founder and chairman of JMP Advisors Pvt Ltd.
  • Former global CEO of PayU Group, Laurent Le Moal, and Jan Bune, former partner at Deloitte Netherlands were appointed as the non-executive directors.

  • India's Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) was named Pushpak, a glimpse of the new livery was released during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.
  • Prime Minister Modi reviewed the progress of the vehicle, which is a key component of India's space exploration endeavours.
  • The reusable launch vehicle promises to revolutionise this domain by slashing launch costs by nearly 80%, thereby making space exploration more accessible and sustainable.
  • The Pushpak RLV is designed as an all-rocket, fully reusable single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) vehicle, incorporating several major elements such as the X-33 advanced technology demonstrator, the X-34 test bed technology demonstrator, and the upgraded DC-XA flight demonstrator.

  • The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) gets enforced immediately after the election schedule is announced.
  • The Model Code of Conduct is a set of guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India for the conduct of political parties and candidates during elections mainly with respect to speeches, meetings, processions, polling day, polling booths, observers, party in power, election manifestos, and general conduct.

IPS officer Daljit Singh Chaudhary is New Director General of NSG

  • The Centre appointed 1990 batch IPS officer, Daljit Singh Chaudhary as the director general (DG) of National Security Guard (NSG).
  • Chaudhary, who is currently the DG of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), has been given the additional charge of heading the NSG.
  • Also known as black cats, NSG is India's counter terrorism force.
  • It is a federal counter deployment force against terrorism and anti-hijacking operations.
  • The force is trained to deal with specific situations and used only in exceptional circumstances as deemed by the government.

Shafiqur Rahman Barq, India's Oldest MP and Samajwadi Party Leader, Dies

  • India's oldest MP in Parliament, senior Samajwadi Party leader, and MP from Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal, Shafiqur Rahman Barq, died.
  • Born on July 11, 1930, Shafiqur Rehman Barq began his political career with former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. He also served as the coordinator of the Babri Masjid Action Committee and was known for amplifying the voice of the Muslim community across the country.
  • He also worked closely with Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav at the time of the party's formation.
  • Barq, who has been a four-time MLA, was elected MP from Sambhal for the fifth time in 2019. Barq won the Muradabad Lok Sabha seat three times (1996, 1998, and 2004) and the Sambhal Lok Sabha seat twice (2009 and 2019) from SP.

  • Ahead of the upcoming general elections for Lok Sabha and Odisha assembly, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched under the Mission Shakti loan scheme for interest-free loans of up to Rs. 10 lakh for members of self-help groups (SHGs).

Over 1,000 Start-ups, Investors, Incubators to Participate in 'Start-up Mahakumbh'

  • Over 1,000 start-ups, along with numerous investors and incubators, are set to convene at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi from March 18 for the 'Start-up Mahakumbh,' a three-day event led by ASSOCHAM, NASSCOM, Bootstrap Incubation & Advisory Foundation, TiE and Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association (IVCA) and supported by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), Government-e-Marketplace (GeM), Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India (ECGC) and Zomato. This event aims to be one of the largest gatherings of start-ups, unicorns, investors, and industry stakeholders, providing a platform for brainstorming on sector-related issues.
  • The 'Start-up Mahakumbh' will feature various activities such as mentoring sessions, master classes, keynote addresses, and Unicorn roundtables, fostering an exchange of ideas to strengthen India's start-up ecosystem.

IIT-Delhi to Set up Centre of Excellence on Applied AI for Sustainable Systems

  • IIT Delhi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with R. Systems International Limited, an IT service management company, to setup a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Applied AI for Sustainable Systems.
  • This new centre will be set up on the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi campus, and will include a cutting-edge research lab, the creation of an endowed faculty chair position, and the initiation of merit-based student scholarships.
  • For this partnership, the R. Systems CoE will serve as an R&D hub, bringing together R. System researchers with faculty members and students to address at-scale real-world problems. The work produced by this CoE would enhance the research and development capabilities of both R. Systems and IIT Delhi.

Odisha CM Launches Scholarship Scheme for UG, PG Students

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched a scholarship scheme for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The 'Nutana Unnata Abhilasha Odisha' scheme aims to empower the state's youth and help them to carry forward their studies.
  • The scholarship amount for General and OBC students is Rs. 9,000 and Rs. 10,000, respectively, whereas for SC/ST and 'Nirman Shramik' students, it is Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 11,000, respectively.

Former Supreme Court Judge Justice A. M. Khanwilkar Appointed Lokpal Chairperson

  • President of India Draupadi Murmu appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice A. M. Khanwilkar as the new Lokpal chairperson as well as six other members to the anti-corruption body.
  • The judicial members appointed are as follows: Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy, Justice Sanjay Yadav and Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi.
  • The other members are Sushil Chandra, Pankaj Kumar and Ajay Tirkey.
  • The decision to appoint Justice Khanwilkar as the new Lokpal of India was made following a meeting by a high-level committee consisting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
  • Khanwilkar served as CJ of the Himachal Pradesh HC and Madhya Pradesh HC, before being elevated to the SC.
  • The Lokpal was established under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act 2013. The Lokpal is tasked with inquiring and investigating allegations of corruption against public functionaries falling within the scope and ambit of the Lokpal Act.
