S. Jaishankar Attend Indian Ocean Conference in Perth

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the inaugural session of the 7th Indian Ocean Conference in Perth, Australia. The two-day Indian Ocean Conference was held with the theme of 'Towards a Stable and Sustainable Indian Ocean'. The Conference is a flagship consultative forum for countries in the Indian Ocean Region, organised annually by the Ministry of External Affairs since 2016, in association with the India Foundation.
  • S. Jaishankar was joined by Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe and his counterparts from Australia and Singapore. The Conference featured ministers from over 22 countries and senior officials from 16 countries and 6 multilateral organisations.

RBI Keeps Lending Rate Unchanged at 6.5%

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)-led Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) retained the key interest rate repo at 6.5 per cent signalling that the central bank's long battle against persistently high inflation is not over yet.
  • The decision to maintain the key repo rate at 6.5 percent marked the sixth time the 6-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) opted to keep the interest rates unchanged.
  • The standing deposit facility (SDF) rate stands at 6.25 per cent and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the bank rate stand at 6.75 per cent.
  • The MPC also decided to remain focused on 'withdrawal of accommodation' to ensure that inflation progressively aligns with the target while supporting growth.

ONGC in Joint Venture Agreement with NTPC Green for Renewable Energy

  • ONGC and NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) signed a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) to focus on offshore wind energy projects. The agreement signed at India Energy Week in Goa, was witnessed by Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri. This collaboration aims to lead renewable energy initiatives, both domestically and internationally.
  • Besides offshore wind projects, the agreement extends to ventures in storage, e-mobility, carbon credits, and green hydrogen business, including derivatives like Green Ammonia and Green Methanol.
  • Earlier, ONGC had entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NGEL in September 2023, emphasising the advancement of renewable energy objectives across sectors.

China Launches Qinling Station for Antarctic Scientific Study

  • China inaugurated its newest Antarctic research station, the Qinling facility, situated on Inexpressible Island in the Ross Sea. This marked China's fifth research station in Antarctica and signifies its commitment to advancing scientific exploration in the region.
  • The Qinling station is poised to operate year-round, accommodating a team of up to 80 researchers and support staff.
  • Its primary focus is on conducting diverse research activities encompassing biological oceanography, glaciology, marine ecology, and other scientific disciplines.
  • China's investment in the Qinling station underscores its dedication to expanding our understanding of the Antarctic ecosystem and its broader implications for global environmental dynamics.

Age-group Wrestling Nationals Postponed

  • The Under-15 and Under-20 wrestling National Championships, scheduled to be held in Gwalior this month (February 2024), have been postponed after some state associations expressed their inability to participate in the event at such a short notice.
  • The ad hoc committee in charge of affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India took the decision after taking into account the state associations' genuine demand.
  • The championships were scheduled to be held from February 11 to 17. Representations from some state wrestling associations have been received to reschedule the U20 & U15 National Wrestling Championship. They have urged that in such short duration of time, they are unable to send the teams as trials for the same has not been conducted till date.

SCA Stadium Renamed in Honour of Niranjan Shah Ahead of India-England Test Match

  • Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) Stadium was rebranded as the Niranjan Shah Stadium. This change came as a tribute to the former first-class cricketer and senior cricket administrator, Niranjan Shah, marking his immense contributions to the sport and the region. The stadium has been a central hub for national cricket matches for over a decade.
  • The stadium's new name also celebrates the Shah family's continued involvement in cricket, with Jaydev Shah, Niranjan's son, at the helm of the SCA as its president. Like his father, Jaydev has had a distinguished career, leading Saurashtra in the domestic circuit and participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL), further cementing the family's cricketing heritage.

Tawangchu Tides International Kayaking Championship-2024 in Arunachal Pradesh

  • The three-day Tawangchu Tides International Kayaking Championship-2024 was held in Tawang District, Arunachal Pradesh. District Deputy Commissioner inaugurated the championship at Dongshengmang in Bongleng village near Indo Bhutan border.
  • A total of 51 kayakers from different countries including Britain, Russia and Australia and different states of the country participated in it. The event was organised by an organisation called 'SWYTCH'.
  • As per the race director Charanjeev Kala, the goal of this initiative was to position Arunachal Pradesh as a global hub for kayaking, with the aspirations to host future World Championships. The race was held from February 7 to 9, and culminated with the declaration of the Champion Kayakers, the one who has done best in all the races.

PM Modi-led Panel Clears Names for Lokpal Chief, Vigilance Commissioner

  • Supreme Court judge Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar was elected as the new chairperson of Lokpal, and Aeratu S. Rajeev, Managing Director (MD) of Bank of Maharashtra, was picked for the post of Vigilance Commissioner (VC) by a committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Khanwilkar was confirmed as a permanent judge in the Bombay High Court in April 2002. He served briefly as the chief justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court and was then appointed the chief justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court in November 2013. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2016 and served a six-year term until his retirement in July 2022.
  • A.S. Rajeev was appointed as the MD and CEO of the Bank of Maharashtra in December 2018. His tenure was to end on December 1, 2023, but he was given an extension until May 31, 2024 in November 2023. Before BoM, he was the Executive Director of Indian Bank and during this time, he was the Director of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Announces Free Bus Travel for Transgender Community

  • Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a government initiative declaring free bus travel for the transgender community within the national capital. Emphasising the long-standing neglect faced by marginalised groups, Kejriwal underscored the importance of extending equal rights and privileges to all members of society, regardless of gender identity.
  • Kejriwal outlined the plan for expedited Cabinet approval and swift implementation of the scheme, aimed at providing tangible benefits to the transgender community within a few weeks.
  • This initiative builds upon the government's commitment to promoting inclusivity and social welfare.

Ex-Maharashtra Minister Baba Siddique Resigns from Congress after 48 Years

  • Former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique resigned from the Congress with immediate effect. Baba Siddique had been associated with the Congress for 48 years.
  • Baba Siddique was the MLA for three consecutive terms in 1999, 2004 and 2009, and had also served as a Minister of State (MoS) for Food & Civil Supplies, Labour and FDA (2004–08). He had also served as a Municipal Corporator earlier for two consecutive terms (1992–1997).
  • The move came just days after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders said that Siddique was expected to join the faction of the party led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Siddique's resignation is another setback to Congress in a span of few weeks. In January, senior Congress leader Milind Deora, considered a close friend of Rahul Gandhi, announced his resignation from the grand-old party, bringing an end to his family's 55-year association with Congress. He later joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction.

India to Host 9-day Milan Naval Exercise

  • India will host a nine-day mega naval exercise in Visakhapatnam beginning February 19 that is expected to see participation of over 50 navies against the backdrop of fractious geopolitical environment including increasing security concerns in the Red Sea. Navies from the US, Japan, Australia, France, Bangladesh, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia are set to be among the participating nations in the 'Milan' exercise to be conducted off Visakhapatnam from February 19 to 27.
  • Milan is a biennial multinational naval exercise which started in 1995 with the participation of Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand in consonance with India's 'Look East' policy. The exercise flourished under the aegis of Andaman and Nicobar Command till its 10th edition.
  • The upcoming exercise would comprise two phases -- the 'Harbour phase' and the 'Sea phase'.
  • The harbour phase, aimed to promote cultural sharing amongst the participating nations, would consist of an international maritime seminar, international city parade, maritime exhibition and various sporting events.
  • In the sea phase, ships along with aircraft of friendly foreign countries would participate along with the Indian Navy's aircraft and other units.

  • Three women military officials, Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth, Colonel Ponung Doming and Lt Commander Annu Prakash, were among the personnel who represented India at the World Defence Show in Riyadh. The five-day mega event showcased the latest advancements in defence technology serving as a vital platform for international collaboration among the participating companies.
  • The participation of these three exceptional women officers at the World Defence Show served as a testament to the growing role of Indian women in the defence landscape.
  • Under the esteemed leadership of HRH Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI), World Defense Show hosted its second edition in 2024.

  • As the Lifetime President of the Memorial Gates Council, she was instrumental in the creation of the iconic Memorial Gates at Hyde Park Corner in London as a tribute to the war efforts made by some 5 million Commonwealth soldiers during the World Wars.

Godfathers of wind Share Engineering's QEPrize

  • Two men who made critical contributions to the development of wind power will share the £500,000 Queen Elizabeth Prize, nicknamed the 'Nobel of Engineering'.
  • Denmark's Henrik Stiesdal framed the early design principles for wind turbines and led the installation of the world's first offshore wind farm.
  • The UK's Andrew Garrad developed the computer models that optimise and certify turbine and farm designs.
  • The 2024 Queen Elizabeth Prize for engineering laureates were announced at a ceremony in London's Science Museum in the presence of the Princess Royal.

Jharkhand CM Distributes First Installment of Abua Awas Yojana

  • Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren distributed letters of acceptance and first instalments to 24,827 families of Kolhan region in the first phase of the Abua Awas (housing) Yojana.
  • Of the total applications received from 2,92,624 families in Kolhan region, the government identified 1,05,810 families under the scheme from East Singhbhum district, 1,03,319 families from West Singhbhum and 83,495 families from Seraikela-Kharswan district.
  • In the first phase, the CM will hand over 24,827 letters of acceptance in Kolhan division comprising 8,138 families from East Singhbhum district, West Singhbhum (10,252) and Seraikela-Kharswan district (6,437) along with the first instalment of Rs. 30,000 each, which were transferred to their bank accounts through DBT.
  • Former CM Hemant Soren had launched the scheme in November 2023 to provide houses to the homeless and those who were deprived of the benefit under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

BHU Faculty to Spend a Year in Top 500 Global Institutions

  • Banaras Hindu University introduced a new initiative known as the Global Experience Faculty Program (GEFP). Through this programme, the varsity aims to offer faculty members an opportunity to spend up to a year in the top 500 global institutions (as per THE or QS rankings) targeting teachers with limited international exposure in their academic careers.
  • Launched under the Institution of Eminence at BHU, the programme includes a monthly consolidated fellowship of $3000 and travel expenses.

IGNOU Gets Campus in Jammu, Dharmendra Pradhan Inaugurates Building

  • Twenty-six years after starting its operations in Jammu and Kashmir, IGNOU now has its campus in Jammu. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan virtually inaugurated the state-of-the-art campus building of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Regional Centre, Jammu at Bantalab in the outskirts of the city.
  • The new campus building has a high-tech electric, electronic, CCTV, solar, intercom, electronic private automatic branch exchange (EPABX) and fire alarm.
  • Regional Centre, Jammu currently has 31 Learner Support Centres (LSC) in prominent government higher education institutions, the University of Jammu campus and in reputed higher education institutions affiliated with the University of Jammu with LSCs at most of the district headquarters.

SC collegium Recommends Justice N. V. Anjaria's Name as Chief Justice of Karnataka HC

  • The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud recommended the name of Gujarat High Court judge N. V. Anjaria as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
  • The collegium, also comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B. R. Gavai, said that a vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court would arise after the retirement of Justice P. S. Dinesh Kumar on February 24.
