Global Scientists Convene in Kathmandu for IPBES Nexus Assessment

  • Over 130 leading scientists and subject experts from 70 countries gathered in Nepal's capital Kathmandu for the third author meeting of the IPBES nexus assessment, which will examine the interlinkages among the sustainable development goals related to food and water security, health for all, protecting biodiversity, and combating climate change.
  • The meetings, hosted by Nepal's Ministry of Environment and Forests and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, will be held from February 5-9.
  • This is the first time an IPBES assessment meeting is being held in South Asia.
  • Established in 2012 with 145 member states, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) functions similarly to the IPCC for climate change, with an aim to strengthen the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services.
  • The nexus assessment seeks to enhance understanding of the intricate relationships between biodiversity, water, food, and health in the context of climate change. The goal is to identify options for improved policies and foster collaboration across related sectors.

Michelle O'Neill Becomes Northern Ireland's First Minister

  • In a historic moment, the Irish nationalist leader, Michelle O'Neill, became the First Minister of Northern Ireland as power-sharing resumes after a two-year gap.
  • The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) reached an agreement with the UK government that soothed its Brexit fears, setting the way for legislators to be recalled to the Northern Ireland Assembly, bringing an end to the two-year parliamentary gridlock.
  • A house speaker was also sworn in, as was Emma Little-Pengelly was appointed Deputy First Minister with the same powers as the First Minister.

Namibia's Gets President

  • Namibia's Vice President Nangolo Mbumba was sworn in as President following the death of his predecessor, Hage Geingob.
  • Foreign Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was appointed Vice President.
  • Geingob died at the age of 82. He had been Namibia's President since November 2014, being elected to his second office term in November 2019.

Anuj Ranjan New CEO of Private Equity Business of Brookfield Asset Management

  • Canadian investment giant Brookfield, which manages more than $850 billion in assets under management named Anuj Ranjan as the new CEO of its private equity business in a key global top deck reshuffle.
  • Ranjan had established Brookfied's India and Middle East operations and took over from Cyrus Madon who joined the board of directors as Executive Chairman.
  • Before this elevation, Ranjan was President of Brookfield's Private Equity business and Global Head of Business Development.
  • He joined Brookfield in 2006 and has held various positions within the company and its affiliates, including mergers & acquisitions, private equity and real estate.

Eicher Enters Small Commercial Vehicles Segment, Unveils 'EV-first' Truck

  • Eicher Trucks and Buses, a division of VE Commercial Vehicles, announced its entry into the small commercial vehicle (SCV) segment with global unveiling of its 'EV-first' Eicher truck at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024.
  • The newly launched truck, designed for city and near-city distribution, aims to transform last-mile logistics and spans from 2 tonnes to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight (GVW).

Cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko Sets Record for most Time in Space

  • Russia's space corporation said that cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko set a world record for total time spent in space, surpassing his compatriot Gennady Padalka who logged more than 878 days in orbit - the equivalent of nearly two-and-a-half years.
  • Kononenko is currently on board the International Space Station (ISS) when he celebrated the milestone. He has travelled five times since 2008. His current trip to the ISS launched last year (2023) on a Soyuz MS-24.

Birla Group's Arm, Birlasoft Ventures into AI with Launch of Cogito

  • Birlasoft Ltd, a key player in the diversified CK Birla Group, launched a comprehensive Generative AI platform, Cogito, the company announced.
  • The Gen AI platform offers support through comprehensive trainings, educational materials, tutorials, and documentation. Birlasoft further said that organisations can devise roadmaps for operational improvement, adapt to market dynamics, and explore new growth avenues using Cogito.

FIFA World Cup 2026

  • The governing body of football, FIFA, announced the schedule of the 2026 Football World Cup, which would jointly be hosted by Canada, the US and Mexico. The FIFA World Cup 2026 will begin on June 11, 2026 in Mexico and conclude on July 19 in US. Mexico's Azteca Stadium will host the opening fixture of FIFA World Cup 2026 while New Jersey's Metlife Stadium will host FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
  • FIFA World Cup 2026 will see 48 team vying for the trophy, a total of 104 matches will be played throughout the competition.

Wrestling Nationals: Vinesh Phogat Clinches 55kg Gold

  • Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat clinched the 55kg gold medal in the Senior National Wrestling Championships 2024 at the Railway Stadium in Jaipur.
  • Vinesh beat youngster Jyoti 4-0 in the finals to emerge as the winner in the 55kg event at the National Wrestling Championships 2024.

Pawan Kumar Assumes Charge as Chief Adviser (Cost) in Ministry of Finance

  • Pawan Kumar, ICoAS, assumed charge as Chief Adviser (Cost), Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, in Level-17 (Apex level).
  • Kumar is a 1992-batch officer of the Indian Cost Accounts Service under Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance. Prior to assuming the charge Kumar was holding the charge of Additional Chief Adviser (Cost).
  • Kumar is a qualified Cost Accountant and possesses a diverse work experience in various capacities at different Ministries/Departments and autonomous bodies like Tariff Commission, Delhi Development Authority, Director General of Trade Remedies, Department of Economic Affairs, Department of Public Enterprises etc.
  • Kumar played a pivotal role in development of a web-based Online Dashboard for performance evaluation of CPSEs in Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Finance. This initiative was conferred 'Gold Award' in the 'e-Governance' category in 2022, by a leading think tank.

Apurva Chandra New Health Secretary

  • Apurva Chandra, 1988-batch IAS officer from Maharashtra cadre, was appointed as the new Health Secretary, according to an order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
  • Chandra was handling the position of Secretary in the Department of Health and Family Welfare for a month as an additional charge, along with serving as the Secretary in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.
  • Senior bureaucrat Sanjay Jaju was appointed as the new I&B Secretary in place of Chandra.
  • Eight other senior officers were appointed in different central government departments and in the anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal, as part of a top-level bureaucratic reshuffle affected by the Centre.

Abhay Thakur, India's New Ambassador to Russia

  • Abhay Thakur, Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of 1992 batch, was named India's ambassador to Russia. Formerly the High Commissioner to Mauritius and Nigeria, Thakur replaced the present ambassador Pavan Kapoor of 1990 batch.
  • Kapoor was appointed as new Secretary (west) in the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • Thakur is an engineer-turned-diplomat. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1992. Thakur played a distinguished role as Office on Special Duty (OSD) at Ministry of External Affairs during the New Delhi G20 Leaders Summit.

Namibian President Hage Geingob Passes Away

  • Namibia's President Hage Geingob passed away at the gae of 82, weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer.
  • Geingob played a central role in what has become one of Africa's most stable democracies after returning from a long exile in Botswana and the United States as an anti-apartheid activist.
  • He was the country's third President since it gained independence in 1990 following more than a century of German and then apartheid South African rule.
  • He had been president since 2015 and was set to finish his second and final term in office this year (2024).

Grammy Awards 2024

  • Musicians Shankar Mahadevan, and Zakir Hussain made India proud on a global platform as their fusion band Shakti clinched the Grammy Awards for Best Global Music Album for their latest release, 'This Moment'. The 66th annual Grammy Awards 2024 were held in Los Angeles.
  • 'This Moment' features 8 songs created by John McLaughlin (guitar, guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), V. Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist).
  • The Grammy Awards (stylized as GRAMMY), or simply known as the Grammys, are awards presented by the Recording Academy of the United States to recognise 'outstanding' achievements in the music industry.
  • They are regarded by many as the most prestigious and significant awards in the music industry worldwide. They were originally called the Gramophone Awards, as the trophy depicts a gilded gramophone.
  • The first award ceremony was held simultaneously in two locations on May 4, 1959, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, and the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York City, New York, with 28 Grammys awarded.

Bihar Government Makes Competency Test Must for Contractual Teachers

  • The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) slammed the ruling Janata Dal United-led Bihar government for making it mandatory for contractual teachers in the state to pass the competency examinations conducted by it.
  • As per a notification issued, contractual government teachers who fail to clear the eligibility test in three out of four permissible attempts will face termination from their service.
  • The first eligibility test for contractual teachers in Bihar is scheduled for February 26, followed by three successive exams.

PM Modi Inaugurates Permanent Campus of IIM Sambalpur

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Management-Sambalpur. The permanent campus is located in Basantpur. The foundation stone for the institute was also laid in January 2021. The campus was designed and supervised by DDF Consultants in association with NBCC India.
  • The campus boasts several key structures, including the Koutilya - Administration Building, Thakshasila 1 and 2 - Academic Blocks, Konark - Auditorium Block, I2 Hub: Incubation, Innovation and Library, Faculty Block, and MDP Block, which includes a Guest House.
  • The campus has multiple lecture halls, video conferencing facilities, and eleven hostels with accommodation for 600 students. It comprises dedicated blocks for faculty and staff residences, a lecture hall equipped with traditional chalkboards, digital boards, blended boards, a computer centre, and an extensive library open 24X7.

St. George's University School of Medicine Introduces Scholarship for International Students

  • St. George's University (SGU) School of Medicine, Grenada, West Indies introduced a merit-based scholarship exclusively for its international students. The SGU Academic Award is extended to all incoming, new international students and is determined by their academic performance upon acceptance.
  • The newly introduced academic merit scholarship award is available to incoming international students, alongside the existing International Peace Bursary and Global Scholars Bursary. Eligible students can qualify for multiple awards. Determined by predicted academic performance, the merit-based scholarship aims to acknowledge and reward students' academic accomplishments.

  • Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar released the book titled '9 Incredible Years of Haryana Government – Rise of a New and Vibrant Haryana' at Surajkund Faridabad. The book highlights the state government's accomplishments over nine years and has been published in Hindi and English languages. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and former state Governor Bandaru Dattatreya were also present on the occasion.

Law Commission of India Submits its Report titled 'Revisiting the Law on Prevention of Damage to Public Property'

  • The 22nd Law Commission of India submitted its Report No. 284 titled 'Revisiting the Law on Prevention of Damage to Public Property' to the Government of India. The destruction of public property has continued undiminished causing gargantuan losses to the public exchequer and inconvenience to the general public.
  • Bearing in mind the gravity of the issue and the loss being borne by the state exchequer, the 22nd Law Commission suo motu undertook to prepare this Report.
  • In pursuance of the same, the Commission undertook an extensive study of the subject, analysing the various relevant constitutional and statutory provisions, the numerous judicial pronouncements by the courts across the country, and the incidents involving large scale destruction of public property.
  • The 22nd Law Commission recommended several key changes to tackle damage to public property more effectively. These include:
  • Reversing the burden of proof so that the accused has to prove they are innocent
  • Introducing fines equal to the market value of damaged public property
  • Making offenders deposit estimated value of damaged property for bail
  • Enacting new laws to address willful obstruction of public property

Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia is Acting Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court

  • The Central government notified the appointment of Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia as Acting Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
  • The development followed the appointment of former Acting Chief Justice Ritu Bahri as Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court.
  • Justice Singh was elevated to the bench in September 2011 as an additional judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and was made permanent in January 2014.
