WHO Honours Countries for the First Time For Eliminating Industrially Produced Trans Fats

  • In a significant milestone, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued its first-ever certificates acknowledging advancements in eliminating trans fatty acids (TFA), both industrially produced and naturally occurring. Five countries, Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand, were commended for their pioneering efforts in demonstrating effective policies and robust monitoring and enforcement mechanisms in their TFA elimination strategies.
  • Despite the challenges, WHO's global initiative to eliminate TFA has shown remarkable progress. While the ambitious target set in 2018 to fully eradicate TFA from the global food supply by the end of 2023 was not met, significant strides were made globally. The results from the first five years of WHO's initiative highlight substantial advancements towards this goal.

Tamil Nadu Achieves Record with Highest Number of Ramsar Sites in India

  • Tamil Nadu set a new benchmark in environmental conservation and biodiversity protection by securing two more Ramsar sites, thus achieving the highest number of such designated areas in the country. The addition of the Longwood Shola Reserve Forest in the Nilgiris and the Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary in Ariyalur propelled the state to the forefront of ecological conservation efforts in India. With these new designations, Tamil Nadu now boasts 16 Ramsar sites, a testament to its rich biodiversity and the state government's commitment to preserving it.
  • Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. These sites are recognized for their ecological significance, biodiversity richness, and the role they play in supporting human life and environmental health.
  • Following these designations, the Tamil Nadu government, in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India, embarked on preparing integrated management plans for its Ramsar sites. This initiative aims to ensure the sustainable conservation of these wetlands, safeguarding their biodiversity and ecological functions for future generations.

AU SFB Appoints Former RBI Deputy Governor H. R. Khan as Non-executive Chairman

  • Private sector lender AU Small Finance Bank appointed Harun Rashid Khan, former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as non-executive chairman following approval from the shareholders.
  • Khan took charge from Raj Verma, whose tenure as Part-time Chairman ended in January.
  • Khan is a former deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and has vast experience of more than four decades in the areas of banking & finance, payment and settlement systems, economics, financial markets, and has held leadership positions.

RBI Orders Halt on Paytm Payments Bank Transactions

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directed Paytm Payments Bank to cease all deposits and credit transactions after February 29, 2024. This action stems from persistent non-compliances and ongoing supervisory concerns within the bank, raising questions about the impact on its customers.
  • Starting from the specified date, Paytm Payments Bank customers will face restrictions on several key transactions. No further deposits, credit transactions, or top-ups will be allowed in customer accounts, prepaid instruments, wallets, FASTags, or National Common Mobility Cards.

ACC Approves Sanjay Mudaliar as Bank of Baroda Executive Director

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the Department of Financial Services (DFS) proposal to post Sanjay Vinayak Mudaliar as Executive Director at Bank of Baroda.
  • Mudaliar will serve his new post from the day he assumes charge for the remainder of his term, i.e. up to December 31, 2025, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • Simultaneously, ACC approved the DFS proposal to post Joydeep Dutta Roy, Executive Director, Bank of Baroda, as Executive Director in the Indian Overseas Bank. Roy will serve his new posting from the day he took charge for the remainder of his term, i.e. up to October 20, 2024, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, according to the DoPT order.

Khelo India Youth Games 2024

  • Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2024, the sixth edition of the flagship event under the Indian government's Khelo India initiative, concluded on January 31, 2024.
  • Over 5,600 athletes from all over the country competed at the Khelo India Youth Games 2024, which ran from January 19 to 31. Tamil Nadu hosted the KIYG 2024 in four cities - Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Coimbatore.
  • Maharashtra defended their Khelo India Youth Games title after topping the medals tally with 57 gold medals, 48 silver and 53 bronze, 158 medals in total. It was their fourth KIYG title.
  • Host state Tamil Nadu finished second with 38 gold, 21 silver and 39 bronze its best-ever finish (98 medals). Haryana, who won two KIYG titles, came third with 35 gold, 22 silver and 46 bronze medals (103 medals).
  • A total of 926 medals - 278 gold, 278 silver and 370 bronze - were on offer across 26 sports at KIYG 2024 Tamil Nadu.
  • The Khelo India Youth Games operates in a team championship format, wherein the medals earned by individual athletes or teams contribute to the overall medals tally of their respective state or Union Territory (UT). Upon the event's conclusion, the state or UT securing the highest count of gold medals is declared the winner.

Asian Cricket Council 'Unanimously' Appoints Jay Shah as President

  • Asian Cricket Council (ACC) appointed Jay Shah as the president of the body for the third year in a row.
  • Jay Shah's extension was proposed by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Shammi Silva for the second time and the nomination was unanimously backed by all the members of the ACC.
  • Shah who is also Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took the reins as president of ACC in January 2021 for the first time.
  • The Asian Cricket Council also known as ACC is a cricket organisation which was established in 1983, to promote and develop the sport of Cricket in Asia.
  • The ACC is headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Smooth Sailing for Vishnu, Books Paris Berth

  • Asian Games bronze medallist Vishnu Sarvanan became the first Indian sailor to qualify for successive Olympics. A Subedar from the Mumbai-based Army Yachting Node, he secured qualification for the Paris Games by finishing 26th out of 152 participants in ILCA-7 at the World Championships. He thus, became the first Indian sailor to make the cut for the Paris Games.

FM Nirmala Sitharaman Presents Her Sixth Straight Budget

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman equalled the record of former Prime Minister Morarji Desai as she presents her sixth straight budget on February 1. Nirmala Sitharaman has presented five full budgets since July 2019 and is the first full-time woman Finance Minister of the country. With the presentation of interim budget on February 1, Nirmala Sitharaman surpassed the records of her predecessors- Manmohan Singh, Arun Jaitley, P. Chidambaram and Yashwant Sinha- who presented five budgets in a row.
  • Morarji Desai, as Finance Minister, presented five annual budgets and one interim budget between 1959-1964. He holds the tag of presenting 10 budgets- the maximum by any Finance Minister.
  • After the PM Modi government came to power in 2014, Arun Jaitley took charge of the finance ministry and presented five budgets in a row from 2014-15 to 2018-19.
  • Piyush Goyal presented the interim budget for 2019-20 on February 1, 2019.
  • After the 2019 general elections, Nirmala Sitharaman was given the charge of the finance portfolio, becoming the second woman to have presented budget after Indira Gandhi, who had presented the budget for financial year 1970-71.
  • The interim budget is presented when general elections are due in the country. The new government, which is likely to be formed around June, will come up with a final budget for 2024-25 sometime in July.

IAS Officer Radha Raturi Appointed First Woman Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand

  • Senior IAS officer Radha Raturi was appointed as the first woman Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand.
  • Raturi, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1988 batch, replaced Sukhbir Singh Sandhu whose tenure ended. She is the first woman to hold the top administrative post in Uttarakhand.
  • During her long administrative career, Raturi has held several important positions. She has worked as a bureaucrat both in undivided Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, which came into existence in November 2000.

ED Arrests Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren

  • Hemant Soren, the Jharkhand Chief Minister and head of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), was arrested after more than seven hours of questioning by the Enforcement Directorate over alleged ownership of a piece of land. The agency had also seized Rs. 36 lakh in cash and a luxury SUV from his Delhi residence a day earlier.
  • Not long before his arrest, Soren submitted his resignation to Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan.

India, Oman Ink Pact for Collaboration in Defence Sector

  • India and Oman signed an agreement that would provide a framework for collaboration in new areas of defence engagement including procurement of military equipment. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was firmed up at a meeting of India-Oman joint military cooperation committee (JMCC) in Muscat.
  • The two sides also carried out a comprehensive review of their defence cooperation and explored ways to boost it in line with their shared strategic interests.
  • The MoU was signed over a month after India and Oman unveiled a joint vision document titled 'A Partnership for the Future'.

INS Nirupak Decommissioned at Visakhapatnam

  • Indian Navy's indigenously designed and built survey ship, INS Nirupak, was decommissioned after 38 years of illustrious service to the nation in a ceremony, presided by Vice Admiral Adhir Arora, Chief Hydrographer to the Govt of India at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatna. The ship was launched on June 4, 1981 at GRSE and commissioned into service on August 14, 1985 by Vice Admiral Jayant Ganpat Nadkarni, then Chief of Naval Staff. The ship was based at Visakhapatnam under the administrative and operational control of FOCINC, ENC. In recognition to its relentless dedication in the field of hydrography, INS Nirupak was awarded Admiral Jal Cursetji Rolling Trophy for best Survey Ship in the year 1994, 1995, 2005 and 2009.

Indian Coast Guard Day

  • Indian Coast Guard Day is observed on February 1. The day aims to honour the contribution of the Coast Guard. The Indian Coast Guard Day is dedicated to the officers and personnel who look after maritime security.
  • The Indian Coast Guard was established on February 1, 1977, to prevent the sea-borne smuggling of goods that hampered the economy. The responsibilities of the Coast Guard include offshore security, marine safety, and coastal security as well as safeguarding India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). On August 18, 1978, the Parliament announced that the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Day would be celebrated on February 1.
  • The Indian Coast Guard's motto is 'वयम रक्षामः' (Vayam Rakshamah), which translates from Sanskrit as 'We Protect'. Missions of Indian Coast Guard: Safety and protection of artificial islands, offshore terminals and other installations. Protection and assistance to fishermen and mariners at sea.

Three young Indian Scientists Receive Prestigious UK Award

  • The UK named nine scientists, including three researchers of Indian descent, as recipients of a prestigious award for young scientists who are advancing science and improving the world. The UK's Blavatnik Awards for young scientists honour research in three categories—Chief Sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering, and Life Sciences, that is revolutionising technology, medicine, and our understanding of the world.
  • The three researchers of Indian descent - Professors Rahul R. Nair, Mehul Malik, and Tanmay Bharat received grants totalling 480,000 pounds.

Tamil Nadu Lists Guidelines for 'Ungalai Thedi, Ungal Ooril' Scheme

  • The Tamil Nadu government released guidelines for the 'Ungalai Thedi, Ungal Ooril' scheme announced in 2023 by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin aimed at strengthening public services and scheme implementation across the state.
  • According to the guidelines, Collectors and senior district-level officials will spend 24 hours (9 a.m. to 9 a.m.) in one taluk on the fourth Wednesday of every month to review the functioning of various projects, inspect infrastructure and receive representations from the public.

IIMC Gets Deemed University Status

  • The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), a renowned institution for Journalism and Mass Communication, achieved the status of a deemed university. This significant development empowers the institute to confer degrees, marking a shift from its previous diploma-granting authority.
  • The deemed university status extends to IIMC New Delhi and its five regional campuses located in Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), Amravati (Maharashtra), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala), and Dhenkanal (Odisha). With this new designation, IIMC is now authorised to offer degrees, including doctoral degrees, marking a substantial stride in its academic capabilities.
  • Established under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, on August 17, 1965, the IIMC stands as one of the premier institutions in the country, providing high-quality training in journalism and engaging in meaningful research in the field of media and mass communication.

IIM Sambalpur, NSE Academy to Introduce PG programme in Fintech for Working Professionals

  • The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sambalpur signed an agreement with the NSE Academy Limited to offer joint certification programmes for working professionals. NSE Academy Limited is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
  • This collaboration is designed to introduce specialised certification courses addressing the dynamic needs of the financial and technology sectors.
  • As part of the MoU, IIM Sambalpur will launch programmes including the first MBA in Financial Technologies (Fintech) and a PG in Management at the Sambalpur and Delhi ISID campuses. These programmes will be facilitated jointly by distinguished faculty members and industry experts from IIM Sambalpur and NSE Academy.

Expanded Bombay Sappers War Memorial Inaugurated

  • Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande inaugurated the expanded Bombay Sappers War Memorial at the Bombay Engineers Group and Centre at Kirkee near Pune and released a commemorative postage stamp to mark the memorial's centenary celebrations.
  • General Pande praised the role of the Bombay Sappers for their outstanding professionalism in rendering combat engineer support to the field formations of the Army.
  • The Bombay Sappers War Memorial is a hallowed structure standing tall in the memory of soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice. The expanded memorial includes two arched rows of ascending walls bearing names of each of the bravehearts and a digital kiosk established to locate each name for the visitors.

  • The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) entered a new era with a new name and brand: 'UN Tourism'.   • UN Tourism's new tagline, 'Bringing the world closer' inspires the design concept of its new symbol: a Pangea shaping a human figure in action. This evolution from the former globe symbols reflects the organisation's emphasis on the dynamic nature of tourism and on putting people first.
  • With 160 Member States and hundreds of private sector affiliates, UN Tourism has its headquarters in Madrid, Spain, and regional offices in Nara (Japan) covering Asia and Pacific, Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) for the Middle East, as well as forthcoming regional offices for the Americas (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Africa (Morocco).
