Canada Officially Adds India to its Probe of Election Meddling

  • Escalating further diplomatic tensions with India, Canada officially added India to its probe of election meddling. The country's public inquiry into foreign interference will examine whether India interfered in Ottawa's national elections or not in 2019 and 2021.
  • Prime Minister Justin Trudeau initiated the probe in 2023, following the leak of intelligence documents to the media. The leaks talked in depth about China's interference in Canada's elections by supporting candidates friendly to President Xi Jinping's government.
  • The commission tasked with the job confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government was indeed under investigation.
  • Interestingly, this is the first time that New Delhi's name has been dragged into the election interference process despite China being a notable one, in addition to Russia and other state and non-state actors.

Simpl Launches Merchant Business Offering to Reduce CoD Settlement Time

  • Simpl, a checkout network company, launched its business offering, 'Early Settlement', for direct-to-customer (D2C) orders.
  • As per the company, the product aims to reduce the settlement time for cash-on-delivery (CoD) orders by up to 90 per cent and improve daily sales by 40 per cent.
  • The Bengaluru-headquartered company said that this offering settles prepaid orders with merchants, while providing merchants with the ability to improve their cash flows with same-day settlement of both CoD and prepaid orders.

Haryana Tops in 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team, at Khelo India Games

  • At the Khelo India Games, Haryana won the gold medal and Rajasthan silver in the 10m air pistol mixed team event. Tamil Nadu clinched bronze.
  • In the rhythmic gymnastics Hoop event, Maharashtra's Kimaya Karle and Sanyukta Kale took first and second places, while Muskan Rana from J&K took the third place. In the rhythmic gymnastics Ball event, Sanyukta Kale took the first place, Muskan Rana took the second place and Life Adlakha from Haryana took third place. In the Club event of the same sport, Muskan Rana ended up at the top of the podium. Parina Madanpotra from Maharashtra stood second and Life Adlakha from Haryana came third.

Tamil Nadu: Stalin Inaugurates Jallikattu Stadium

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin inaugurated a jallikattu stadium in Madurai where the sport is most famous.
  • Touted to be the first of its kind, the three-tiered stadium is spread across 65 acres. Built at a cost of Rs. 63 crore, it has a seating capacity of 5,000. The stadium also has an air-conditioned space that can seat 50 people. A veterinary dispensary and an emergency centre are set up for treatment of injured bulls and tamers. Ten emergency vehicles would be stationed outside the stadium during the competitions.
  • This is the first such stadium for jallikattu in the world," Stalin said at the event.
  • Stalin named the stadium at Keelakarai village after his father and five time chief minister Late M. Karunanidhi as the 'Kalaignar Centenary Eru Thazuvuthal Arangam' and unveiled his statue.

Over 1500 Farmers Invited to Witness Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path

  • The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare invited over 1500 farmers to witness the 75th Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path. These farmers are beneficiaries of various central government schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana. During their stay, the farmers also underwent training on key government schemes like the Agri Infrastructure Fund, National Seeds Cooperation, and Per Drop More Crop.

Former Karnataka CM Jagadish Shettar Rejoins BJP

  • In a big setback to the Congress party, former Chief Minister of Karnataka, Jagadish Shettar, rejoined the Bharatiya Janata Party nearly a year after quitting the saffron party. Shettar had previously switched allegiance to the Congress after being denied a ticket by the BJP ahead of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections.

The 14th All India Police Commando Competition Held in Visakhapatnam

  • The annual 14th All India Police Commando Competition (AIPCC) was held at the Greyhounds Training Centre in Kapuluppada, Visakhapatnam. Chief guest, commissioner Ravi Shankar, explained how he started his career as an assault commander in the Greyhounds division. He lauded the calibre of the commandos selected from various divisions and said this competition hosted the best commando teams globally.
  • Greyhounds additional DGP Rajeev Kumar Meena announced that the Greyhounds division hosted the AIPCC for the first time since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. With representation from 23 teams at the national level, including from AP, Gujarat, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Orissa, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, MP, Bihar, and seven central teams, the competition promised a diverse and challenging showcasing of commando skills.
  • Participants from police organisations such as RPF, BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBT, SSB and Assam Rifles were listed for the competition, and brought a blend of expertise to the events.
  • The competitions covered five dimensions: navigation, skill test, planning and presentation, physical activity and firing. The winners were decided by a 50-member panel from the All India Sports Control Board.

Telangana to Unveil Gruha Jyothi Scheme in February

  • The Chief Minister of Telangana, Revanth Reddy, took significant strides to expedite the implementation of various welfare schemes, including the much-anticipated Gruha Jyothi Scheme. The state government aims to roll out this scheme from the first week of February 2024, bringing relief to numerous households.
  • The announcement of the Gruha Jyothi Scheme, which promises 200 units of free electricity, sparked confusion among citizens. In response, a considerable number of people refrained from paying their electricity bills for the past two months, anticipating the scheme's implementation. To address this, the Telangana government clarified that only individuals who have settled their electricity bills for December 2023 and January 2024 are eligible for the scheme. No arrears in electricity bills during this period are a prerequisite for availing the benefits.
  • As a part of this scheme, every household possessing a Below Poverty Line (BPL) card will receive 200 units of electricity free of charge starting February. For households with electricity consumption within the 200-unit threshold, there will be no electricity charges.

Himachal Pradesh Technical University Gives Nod to Dual Degree Programmes

  • The academic council of Himachal Pradesh Technical University approved its proposal to start dual degree programmes under the National Education Policy, 2020 for its students. The decision was taken during the 33rd meeting of the academic council of the university held under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof. Shashi Kumar Dhiman.
  • Students can now pursue dual degree programmes -- Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology (Btech-Mtech), and Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration (BBA-MBA) -- in colleges affiliated to the university.
