India Launches "Alliance for Global Good-Gender Equity and Equality" at World Economic Forum

  • On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, India unveiled the 'Alliance for Global Good-Gender Equity and Equality'. The initiative gained support from influential entities, with the World Economic Forum (WEF) and Invest India joining as crucial partners.
  • WEF founder and Chairman Klaus Schwab pledged full support to India's initiative, designating WEF as a 'Network Partner' and Invest India as an 'Institutional Partner'.
  • The announcement took place during an India Reception, hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Hardeep Singh Puri, along with WEF Founder Klaus Schwab, were present at the event.
  • The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will support the alliance, which will be housed and anchored by the CII Centre for Women Leadership.

India First Vice Chair of COFI Sub-Committee on Fisheries Management

  • For the first time in 59 years, India was appointed as the first vice-chair of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Committee on Fisheries (COFI) Sub-Committee on Fisheries Management.
  • This came at a time when numerous countries are calling out China's illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing practices in international waters, often violating Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of other states.
  • Established in 1965, the COFI is an intergovernmental forum that addresses issues on international fishing and aquaculture, providing policy guidance on fisheries management, recognising global challenges, and promoting collective solutions to ensure the environmental, economic and social sustainability of the fishing industry.
  • The grouping also makes recommendations to the FAO Council or its Director-General. The Sub-Committee on Fisheries Management is a new sub-group formed under the COFI in 2022, during the 35th session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI), held in Rome. It works closely with the two other COFI sub-committees, the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture and the Sub-Committee on Fish Trade.
  • India is one of the top fishing nations with over 28 million inland and marine fisheries. It is also one of the founding members of the FAO, whose headquarters is in Rome.

SEBI Chairperson Launches CDSL's Multi-Lingual Initiatives for Investor Ease

  • SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch launched two multi-lingual initiatives of Central Depository Services (India) (CDSL) aimed at increasing inclusivity and accessibility in the capital market landscape. CDSL introduced an upgrade in investor CAS through the 'Apka CAS – Apki Zubaani' initiative, enabling investors to receive their statements in their preferred language amongst 23 diverse Indian languages.
  • A unique multi-lingual chatbot, 'CDSL Buddy Sahayta 24*7,' on the CDSL website seeks to simplify investors' journeys towards 'Atmanirbharta' or self-sufficiency. Starting with support in four languages, the chatbot provides round-the-clock assistance, becoming a constant companion for investors navigating the complexities of the securities markets.

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) granted approval for the appointment of Praveen Achuthan Kutty as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DCB Bank.

Astronauts from Turkey, Sweden and Italy Launch to Space Station

  • Turkey's first astronaut along with a Swede and Italian launched to the International Space Station on a chartered SpaceX flight.
  • The Falcon rocket blasted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre, carrying the three men, all with military pilot experience and representing their homelands.
  • Turkey's Alper Gezeravci, a former fighter pilot and captain for Turkish Airlines, is the first person from his country to rocket to space.

  • The BCCI awarded the title sponsorship rights for the Indian Premier League to Tata Group for a period of five years. The Indian conglomerate, with diverse verticals, has renewed its association with the BCCI for a record-breaking value of INR 2500 crore, the highest-ever sponsorship amount in the history of the league.
  • The collaboration with Tata Group for the title sponsorship of IPL 2024-28 is a significant milestone in IPL's journey.

India Open: Thailand's Puavaranukroh-Taerattanachai Wins Mixed Doubles Title

  • Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai clinched the India Open 2024 mixed doubles title by defeating world No 5 Chinese duo of Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin in straight sets 21-16, 21-16 in the final held at IG Stadium, New Delhi.
  • This was the third Super 750 title for the Thai pair, ranked world number seven in the BWF rankings.

Man Singh Wins Gold at Asian Marathon Championships

  • Man Singh became only the second Indian man to clinch the gold medal at the Asian Marathon Championships as he won the race with a personal best time.
  • He clocked 2 hours, 14 minutes and 19 seconds and won the competition.

India, Cuba Sign Pact on E-solutions

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology signed an MoU with the Ministry of Communications of the Republic of Cuba, on cooperation in the field of sharing successful digital solutions implemented at population scale for digital transformation, in New Delhi. The MoU intends to promote digital transformation through capacity-building programs, exchange of best practices, and other collaborative activities to mutually benefit the digital ecosystems of both countries.
  • India will collaborate with Cuba by building upon development partnership on digital transformation leading to a smooth adoption of digital public infrastructure in Cuba.
  • The agreement was signed between S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and Wilfredo Gonzalez Vidal, First Deputy Minister of Communications, Cuba.

Assam Inducts 'Black Panthers', Police Commandos Trained by Army

  • At the Saru Sajai Sports Complex in Guwahati, amid hundreds of spectators and dignitaries including Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a group of young commandos, dressed in their black combat fatigue, armed with the latest close-range, sniper and automatic weapons, rappelled down a rope from a hovering Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) of the Army Aviation Corp for a demo of a tactical exercise.
  • These commandos may look like from the National Security Guards (NSG) by their tactical move to tackle a hostage situation, but they are the fresh batch of Assam's Black Panthers - the state's very own commando battalions of police force.
  • It was a historic moment for the Assam Police as the new batch of 2,551 police commandos were inducted.
  • According to the Assam Police, this was the first time that such a large contingent of any police force in the country were trained by the Indian Army as a part of their commando training course.

Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2024

  • The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2024 was declared, and the awards were presented by President Droupadi Murmu at a formal event at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
  • This year (2024), 19 children from various parts of the country were recognised for their outstanding accomplishments. Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged with the recipients.
  • The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar awardees include one child each in the fields of Bravery, Science & Technology, and Innovation; four in Social Service; five in Sports; and seven in Art and Culture. The group, as per the Ministry's release, consisted of 9 boys and 10 girls from 18 different States and Union Territories.

IIT Mandi Hosts Indo-German Workshop on Engineering for Sustainable Development

IIT Madras Launches 'Sanjaya' Location Intelligence Tool in Haryana

  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras' (IIT Madras) Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) launched a new location intelligence platform called 'Sanjaya' in Haryana.
  • It will help the road-owning agencies, law enforcement, emergency care providers, and other road safety stakeholders to visualise the high-frequency accident zone data for planning targeted interventions in Haryana.

J&K Approves Increase in Cadre Strength of Judges

  • Jammu and Kashmir raised the cadre strength of district judges by approving a proposal that supported the recommendations of Second National Judicial Pay Commission (SNJPC).
  • The Administrative Council (AC), which met under the Chairmanship of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, approved increasing the cadre strength of District Judges (Selection Grade) to 35 per cent from existing 25 per cent and District Judges (Super Time Scale) to 15 per cent from existing 10 per cent retrospectively.
  • Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor, and Atal Dulloo, Chief Secretary to LG, attended the meeting. The proposal of law department was approved by government to implement the SNJPC recommendations, which was accepted by the Supreme Court in case titled All India Judges Association Vs Union of India and Ors. The Ministry of Law and Justice also conveyed the approval of the competent authority regarding implementation of the recommendations of Second National Judicial Pay Commission.
