  • Apple marched ahead of Samsung and became the top global smartphone brand in terms of shipments in 2023, according to noted industry trackers International Data Corporation (IDC) and Canalys reports. According to IDC, Apple recorded an all-time high market share of over 20 per cent in 2023, driving it ahead of Samsung that recorded a market share of 19.4 per cent in the same year.

  • Pixxel, a space data company known for its cutting-edge hyperspectral earth-imaging technology, inaugurated its first Spacecraft Manufacturing Facility, MegaPixxel, in Bengaluru.
  • This state-of-the-art facility spans over 30,000 square feet and is designed to streamline the satellite manufacturing process from conceptualisation to launch readiness.

  • The 5th edition of the Meghalaya Games held historical significance on multiple fronts. Additionally, this edition introduced traditional indigenous games into its line-up, and it is distinguished as the first instance where the inauguration is carried out by the President of India.

Congress Appoints Sharmila Andhra Unit President

  • The Congress appointed Y. S. Sharmila as the president of its Andhra Pradesh unit. She is the daughter of former CM Y. S. Rajasekhar Reddy and sister of current state CM Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
  • Sharmila had joined the Congress on January 4 in the presence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge. She merged with the Congress her YSR Telangana Party, which she had floated on July 8, 2021. Her appointment came a day after incumbent state chief Gidugu Rudra Raju stepped down from the post. He was appointed special invitee to the Congress Working Committee.

Vice Admiral A. N. Pramod Appointed Director General Naval Operations

  • Vice Admiral A. N. Pramod assumed the pivotal role of Director General Naval Operations (DGNO). A distinguished alumnus of the 38th Integrated Cadet Course at Naval Academy, Goa, Vice Admiral Pramod was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1990.
  • The Vice Admiral boasts a CAT 'A' Sea King Air Operations Officer and Communication & Electronics Warfare Specialist background. His extensive career includes crucial afloat appointments such as Fleet Operations Officer, Western Fleet, and command roles for IN ships Abhay, Shardul, and Satpura. Notably, he commanded the Naval Air Station, Utkrosh, at Port Blair.
  • His leadership extends to roles such as Deputy Commandant, INA, ACNS (Air) at Naval Headquarters, and Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area.

2024 Military Strength Rankings: US Most Powerful, India at 4th Position

  • India maintained its position as the fourth strongest military globally, with the United States named the most powerful followed by Russia and China, according to the Global Firepower rankings.
  • According to GFP's assessment, India holds a Power Index (PwrIndx) score of 0.1023. (A score of 0.0000 is considered 'perfect'). The US holds a Power Index score of 0.0699, Russia 0.0702 and China 0. 0706.
  • A total of 145 countries were assessed on the basis of their global military prowess for the Global Firepower's 2024 Military Strength Rankings.
  • India's neighbour Pakistan was ranked ninth and Italy took the tenth position. South Korea, the United Kingdom, Japan and Turkey also feature in the top 10 list.

Kerala Launches Operation AMRITH to Combat AMR

  • The Kerala Drug Control Department took a proactive step to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through Operation AMRITH (Antimicrobial Resistance Intervention for Total Health). This initiative aims to curb the overuse of antibiotics in the state by conducting surprise raids in pharmacies and detecting over-the-counter (OTC) sales of antibiotics without a doctor's prescription.
  • Operation AMRITH activities align with Kerala's Antimicrobial Resistance Strategic Action Plan (KARSAP) and its antibiotic literacy initiative. Kerala, being the first Indian state with a state action plan on AMR aligned with the national plan, initiated the Antibiotic Literate Kerala Campaign to raise awareness about AMR.

I-STEM to Launch 'Samavesha' at IISc Bengaluru to Enhance Research Collaboration

  • The Indian Science, Technology, and Engineering facilities Map, known as I-STEM, is set to embark on a groundbreaking initiative named 'Samavesha.' This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Office of Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India, aims to transform research collaboration in the country by facilitating easier access to scientific facilities and laboratories.
  • The project's core objective is to optimise the utilisation of research resources on a nationwide scale. In 2024, I-STEM plans to conduct approximately 50 'Samavesha' events across India.
  • One of the pivotal aspects of the project is the establishment of an online portal that will connect researchers and industries with scientific institutes. Through the I-STEM Portal, individuals seeking advanced scientific equipment can seamlessly connect with institutions possessing the desired equipment, enabling them to rent it for their experiments.

Himachal's 'My School-My Pride' Campaign Empowers Education

  • In an endeavour to uplift government schools, the Himachal Pradesh government unveiled the 'My School-My Pride' campaign, urging individuals and organisations to adopt schools of their choice. Launched under the 'Apna Vidyalaya' programme, the initiative encourages voluntary contributions such as career counselling, remedial teaching, yoga training, and financial donations.
