South Africa Releases Former Paralympic Star Oscar Pistorius on Parole

  • South African athlete Oscar Pistorius was released from jail on parole, nearly 11 years after murdering his girlfriend. Popularly known as 'Blade Runner', for his carbon-fiber prosthetic legs, Pistorius was convicted of killing his girlfriend and model Reeva Steenkamp.
  • As per the order by the parole board, a monitoring official will keep an eye on Pistorius until his sentence expires in December 2029. He is also required to inform the authorities in case he seeks job opportunities or moves to a new address.

Adidas to set up its first Asia GCC outside China in Tamil Nadu

  • Adidas is setting up its first and only global capacity centre (GCC) in Asia outside China in Chennai, to focus on 'key processes. This significant development underscores the growing trend of multinational corporations choosing India as a prime destination for setting up their GCCs, capitalizing on the country's abundant software skills.
  • Adidas' decision to set up its GCC in Chennai is seen as a substantial boost for Tamil Nadu's growing GCC ecosystem.

Shashi Singh Appointed As New President of AIRIA

  • Shashi Singh was elected as the new President of All India Rubber Industries Association (AIRIA), the foremost authority representing India's rubber industry. He succeeded Ramesh Kejriwal.
  • With a rich history of over two decades in the rubber industry, Singh has been an integral part of AIRIA. Before his election as President, he served as the senior vice president. His tenure in the association is distinguished by his roles in various committees and as the chief convener for the western region. Notably, Singh orchestrated the successful National Rubber Conference in 2019, showcasing his leadership and organisational skills.
  • Alongside Singh, Zafar Ahmed, the Managing Director of New India Rubber Works Pvt Ltd, was elected as the senior vice-president for 2023-24. In addition, Indra Parekh took on the role of vice president. This new leadership team is expected to bring a blend of experience, insight, and fresh perspectives to AIRIA.
  • Established in 1945, All India Rubber Industries Association (AIRIA) is the largest not-for-profit non-government body serving the rubber industry and trade.
  • The Association has its Head Office at Mumbai with four regional offices at New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai and a Chapter Office at Pune. It works closely with the government on policy issues, enhancing efficiency, competitiveness, and expanding business opportunities for the industry.

Sanjiv Aggarwal Appointed as NIIF's CEO and MD

  • National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited (NIIFL) announced that its board of directors appointed Sanjiv Aggarwal as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of the company.
  • The appointment follows a search process conducted by NIIFL's board of directors.
  • Aggarwal has significant experience in the infrastructure and energy sectors. He joined Actis, a leading global investor in sustainable infrastructure, in 2008, where he became a partner in 2010.
  • National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited (NIIFL) is an Government owned company which maintains infrastructure investments funds for international and Indian investors anchored by the Government of India.
  • The Government of India founded the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited (NIIFL) in February 2015 as a sovereign-anchored fund. Its creation was announced in the Union Budget of 2015-16 by the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
  • It has its headquarters in Mumbai.

ISRO Tests Fuel Cell on PSLV-C58's POEM3 Platform Successfully

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone by successfully testing a 100 W class Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell based Power System (FCPS) in its orbital platform, POEM3. This remarkable feat took place aboard the PSLV-C58 mission, marking a crucial step in the assessment of fuel cell technology for future space missions.
  • The primary objective of the experiment was to evaluate the operation of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel cells in the challenging environment of space. Additionally, the mission aimed to gather valuable data to inform the design of power systems for upcoming space endeavours.

India's First Solar Observatory Aditya L1 Reaches Its Destination Halo Orbit

  • India's first solar observatory Aditya-L1 achieved a major milestone as it reached the Halo Orbit's L1 point, a unique spot in space outside the orbit of the Moon to give a clear view of the Sun throughout the year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the achievement.
  • Objects positioned at L1 remain in a stable configuration relative to the Earth and the Sun, making it an advantageous location for certain types of satellites, like those used for solar observations or monitoring space weather. However, maintaining a satellite at L1 requires constant adjustments due to gravitational perturbations from other celestial bodies.

IOA Appoints Raghuram Iyer as Chief Executive Officer

  • The Indian Olympic Association appointed Raghuram Iyer as the Chief Executive Officer.
  • The lack of a CEO was an issue which was flagged even by International Olympic Committee (IOC) chief Thomas Bach when had visited Mumbai for the IOC Session.
  • Iyer's wealth of experience and proven track record in sports management and administration makes him an ideal candidate to lead the IOA in its mission to promote and develop Olympic sports in India.
  • Iyer had earlier served as CEO of IPL sides Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiants.

Punjab Becomes First State to Map All Accident Prone Sites

  • Punjab became the first state in India to map all 784 accident black spots on the Mappls App, a navigation system developed by MapMyIndia. The announcement was made by Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.
  • Citizens navigating using Mappls App will now receive voice alerts in Punjabi alerting the commuters about the black spot ahead, making Punjab the first state to map accident-prone sites as part of the road safety.
  • An accident black spot is a place where road traffic accidents have historically been concentrated.
  • MapmyIndia is an Indian technology company that builds digital map data, telematics services, location-based SaaS and GIS AI technologies. The company was founded by Rakesh and Rashmi Verma in 1995 and is headquartered at New Delhi with regional offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru and smaller offices across India. It also has international offices in the San Francisco Bay Area and Tokyo.

Alka Lamba New Chief of Congress Women Wing

  • The Congress appointed former Delhi MLA Alka Lamba as its women's wing chief, replacing Netta D'Souza. Lamba was included as a special invitee to the Congress Working Committee some months ago.
  • A former president of the Delhi University Students' Union, Lamba quit the Congress and joined AAP in 2014. She became an MLA from Chandni Chowk Assembly constituency in 2015. Lamba, however, returned to the Congress in 2019.
  • The Congress also appointed former DUSU secretary Varun Choudhary as the president of the party's students wing NSUI.

Calcutta High Court Lawyer Sabyasachi Banerjee Part of Commonwealth Expert Team Observing Bangladesh Elections

  • Sabyasachi Banerjee, an advocate and special public prosecutor practicing in the Calcutta High Court, was appointed as a member of the Commonwealth Expert Team (CET) assigned to observe the Bangladesh general elections, slated to be held on January 7.
  • Besides Banerjee, the team comprises eight other members from all over the world including former Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding.
  • Banerjee achieved his law degree from University of Pune and was awarded the "best student advocate of India" by Thrissur Law College, Kerala in 2000.
  • He enrolled with the Delhi Bar Council in 2002 and has been practicing law for 21 years. He has appeared as a special public prosecutor for the Government of West Bengal.

World Day of War Orphans

  • World Day of War Orphans is observed every year on January 6 is dedicated to recognise the challenges faced by children orphaned due to the impacts of war, invasions, or military conflicts. Founded by the humanitarian organisation SOS – Enfants en Detresse (SOSEED) in France, the day serves as a poignant reminder of the global plight of war orphans. SOSEED operates internationally, striving to safeguard orphans and children from mistreatment and abuse.
  • The theme for 2024 World Day of War Orphans is 'Orphan Lives Matter'.

PM Modi Approves PRITHVI VIGYAN Scheme

  • The Union Cabinet approved Rs. 4800 crore for PRITHvi VIgyan (PRITHVI) scheme, an overarching initiative comprising five on-going sub-schemes related to earth sciences, at a cost of Rs. 4,797 crore over a five-year period from 2021-26. The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposal of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) to club the sub-schemes.
  • The schemes are "Atmosphere and Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems and Services", "Ocean Services, Modelling Application, Resources and Technology", "Polar Science and Cryosphere Research", "Seismology and Geosciences" and "Research, Education, Training and Outreach". The overarching scheme of 'PRITHvi Vigyan' (PRITHVI) will enable development of integrated multi-disciplinary earth science research and innovative programmes across different MoES institutes.
  • The objectives of the overarching "PRITHVI" scheme includes augmentation and sustenance of long-term observations of the atmosphere, ocean, geosphere, cryosphere and solid earth to record vital signs of the earth system and change, development of modelling systems for understanding and predicting weather, ocean and climate hazards, and understanding the science of climate change.

Ministry of Education Launches PRERANA Program

  • Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India launched 'Prerana: An Experiential Learning program', aiming to offer a meaningful, unique, and inspiring experience to all participants, thereby empowering them with leadership qualities.
  • Prerana is driven by a strong commitment to integrate principles of Indian education system and the philosophy of value-based education which is a corner stone of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
  • Prerana is a week-long residential program for selected students of class IX to XII. It is an experiential and inspirational learning program for students with the best-in-class technology where heritage meets innovation. A batch of 20 selected students (10 boys and 10 girls) will attend the program, every week from various parts of the country.

NMC Introduces Post-doctoral Fellowship Courses in Medical Colleges

  • Medical education regulator - National Medical Commission has for the first time introduced post-doctoral fellowship courses in medical colleges regulated by it, in an effort to promote research and clinical skill development.
  • Medical institutions till now were creating and approving these courses at their own level to train doctors.
  • The regulator had notified "Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023" according to which once a medical college is granted permission to start PG course or seats, the course will be treated as recognised.

CJI D. Y. Chandrachud Nominates Five Lawyers as Members of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee

  • Chief Justice of India (CJI) D. Y. Chandrachud nominated five advocates as members of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.
  • The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) recommended the inclusion of the following advocates: Senior Advocate Vibha Datta Makhija, Senior Advocate Siddhartha Dave, Senior Advocate Aparajita Singh, Advocate Mohammad Shoeb Alam and Advocate K Parameshwar Krishnaswamy.
  • The NALSA has been constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 to provide free Legal Services to the weaker sections of the society and to organize Lok Adalats for the amicable settlement of disputes.
  • CJI D. Y. Chandrachud is currently serving as the Patron-in-Chief while Justice Sanjiv Khanna is serving as the Executive Chairman of NALSA.
